Absolutely and it inspired me to do the same thing when I upgraded my bass rig this year. Created a 4 stompbox pedalboard going tuner to clean preamp to compressor and overdrive and using additional distortion and compression from the bass head to make the sound more aggressive and sit better in the overall mix next to the guitars and triggered bass drum sound of my band
I mean, it just makes sense, since the guitars are already distorted - otherwise you'd just add more fuzz and end up with a frequency salad. A bass is made for low end and that way it just does that, without making everything muddy... I suspect it kind of would, if it weren't a little "gnarly" in the low end - so it still shines through (just like he said)
Yea it's a unique and interesting use of the B7K and even more when he had the B3K. It's an overdrive pedal with distortion but he dials it in such a way that he gets the aggressive attack but no fuzz or distortion. It I find it sits way better in the mix than going more crazy with the OD effects. It's inspired me to setup my darkglass pedals in a similar way where when engaged, nothign is fuzzy but it's articulate, especially with my 2 other guitar players. The B7K gives him alot of options, but also to avoid getting the fuzziness, when he had the B3K, I recall him saying he'd go into a compressor, and use that to lower the signal so he wouldn't get too much distortion from the B3k. Once again, very unique use. It's also funny how his B7K has his blend setting set at 100% wet and no clean signal. Very counter intuitive and it's what I can only describe as a clean OD metal tone, which is a contradictory name.
Alex is a truly awesome bassist and definitely one of the reasons why I started using Spector basses with my band. He has a great tone and playing style plus a very strong knowledge of music theory which is explored a lot in his book "Extreme Metal Bass" which has helped me a lot with my playing/writing
I met him a show yrs ago at a show in Tampa Florida . One of nicest guys on the plant and very very smart. The same night I also got to hang out and drink beers with George corpsegrinder . That dude is awesome to hang with .
I met him and got to talk to him for a few minutes at a concert in San Diego, we talked basses and amps. At the time he was big on Modulus basses. One of the kindest and most attentive people I've met.
as talented as Alex is, he truly needs to be mixed in a bit better. but like he said with the guitars being G#/ a# standard its fucking hard to fill him it without it being too much.
@@chrishampton1981 My dream rig would be a spector 5- or 6-string through a Trace Elliot amp and cabinet. I think Mike Starr formerly of Alice in Chains had a similar setup, and that sound was amazing!
@@Gourmet_Goon80 Ah nice combination dude! Mine is a Euro 5LX through a Peterson StroboStomp HD, Darkglass Harmonic Booster, Seymour Duncan Studio Bass Compressor and Darkglass Microtubes B7K Ultra into a Darkglass Alpha Omega 900 head and Darkglass 4x10 cab
Alex awesome bass player. Please do more video with him! I'm not a fan of CC, but I saw a concert in Russia (1993) with Chris Barnes on the old VHS video recording. There were good times! For us, young guys from Russia who never heard such music, this was a great impression.
I love his understated setup. Love the aggressive clean tone approach, it sounds so much more organic and natural than distorted tone. Having seen them live though his spot in the mix is not as solid as it should be, which is a shame..
Bless bands who still use stage amps. For those of us who like rocking out in the front row, we really appreciate it. I get going straight to the PA is way less work than hauling amps, but it takes away from sound closer to the stage.
Straps are Darkglass too!!! I never get blending 2 DI's right, he is using a compressed and distorted signal plus another DI clean. I always thought compressed DI was different from the distorted one and then blend these 2. I think I watched all Websters videos, I don't remember him using just one bass and the old Tonebone plus a Boss TU-2... Whatever. To hell all of this, I love his tone and musicality, if one day he decides to play trumpet I will seriously consider it too.
@@Noah-oh7nm yeah but even in his other sig bass (the black one) he is using DG preamp! th-cam.com/video/3VRMIFBHYEE/w-d-xo.html But hyped or not, I think it would make sense for Spector to use DG tone capsule into at least his blooded spitted bass signature (and his SD pickups too!)
Weird. I used boss odb-3 to pretty much achieve a very similar thing. Cool thing about it was it has mixer for dry and wet. Aids a lot to a nice punchy sound. Guitarists in the project were down tuned, too. I was basically as if a third guitar. xD
I think it's definately a good rig he's using, having those those two direct signals going to the board, seems to me like a very good option for the sound guy to tweak his sound and make sure he cuts through the mix. Let's be honest, mic'ing up a cab alone can be limiting to sit you in the mix.
It's interesting that he goes from the Bassbone preamp into the Darkglass. He did that when he was still using the old B3k too. I have the B3k and I've always plugged my bass into it then going from the pedal to the preamp stage of my Little Mark II and then to a Mooer Radar cab simulator (not using a real cabinet). Apart from lowering the volume before hitting the pedal as he says, are there any tonal differences going bass > Preamp > darkglass vs. the more typical bass >pedal > preamp? is that a signal chain that could/would work with other pedals as well (e.g. envelope filters, chorus, flanger ecc.)?
As good as the Darkglass stuff is, it's a shame to use DI signals through the PA when the guy uses an Aguilar DB751 with matching 8x10. Sure, using B7K in front of it makes it gnarlier but I want this cab mic'ed up !
haha that's exactly how I would describe how I use my microtubes 500... aggressive clean tone. Soon as that gain goes a bit past halfway it's just too fuzzy for me, and I'm playing death metal in a band tuned to A#
Definitely the Steve Harris of Death Metal . He's right you need a clean sound to cut through heavily overdrive guitars. People sometimes loose sight of the fact the bass is completely different to a guitar .
@@elpeluca7780 I made that comment well over a year ago. I'm a student of the bass love playing/learning all aspects of the instrument. Of course you can cut through with a dirty tone. However a clean tone is preferential to me. Even for ultra heavy music.
Why not use two fender 810 neo cabs? Nothing that Aguilar makes can match that. I mean you can have all the bottom, and the middle and all the top. They are ported 810 cabs.

The tone is sick! I am so glad I was finally been able to see them live last year!
Is it just me or are a lot of metal bassists becoming Santa Claus? Tom Araya now looks like Santa Claus, now Alex?
And John Campbell too, but he's been like that for a while
He looks more like Jesus now. Like especially facially not just cus he has long hair and a beard, but like really like jesus
and now Robert Trujillo becoming Danny Trejo

Having seen CC a handful of times in the last few years, I'd have to say the soundguy STILL hasn't found a place for Alex in the mix. Such a shame.
I think it could be better to line out his signal directly from the amp. He got a great head why dont using it for the PA?
he sounded monstrous when i saw cc it was like a bloodied chainsaw gunng gungg gunggg
I have to agree with this from my own experience seeing them live.. The sound was all over the show and Alex didn't have his spot... Shame.
