      That death metal guy is doing nothing impressive with his bass. He's playing that stupid riff over and over, and contributing nothing sensible in terms of chord progression or harmony. Playing random atonal 16th lines on bass with no sense of harmonic movement isn't a feat in any capacity. This is embarrassing, and Victor and the other jazz guy are basically fooling and kidding around with this doofus. Put that guy playing any jazz standard and he would be completely out of his element.

      @mast_adan6114 4 ปีที่แล้ว +131

      @@jazzupthattriad1257 First, I am sorry you know nothing about how jams work. The point of a jam is for there to be a riff that everyone else plays off of. Now yes Webster could've played more but his role and he established this was to lay a groove and give something for the others to work with. Second I like you to listen to anything he's created and see how technical he actually can be. Hes dealt with a death metal band that plays at 250 bpm with only fingers. Another technical metal band eith weird jazz-prog time signatures and chords. Third I can definitely tell you dont play bass or appreciate the actual role of the bass guitar. I bid you a good day sir.

    Alex has never once claimed to be fluent in jazz, fusion or improvising. Knowing how humble he is he was probably floored to be on stage with giants like Wooten and Bailey - it's just cool that someone like Alex is now being given enough respect for the Berklee School to invite him to do a clinic there. Alex is a death metal player, and one of the best, hands down in the metal genre. Nobody should fault him for being willing and eager to step outside of his comfort zone and do something like this.

    This was rad. Steve Bailey clearly isn't vibing on it and was actually a bit awkward despite being a great bassist. Wooten was hip though. Very cool meeting of very different minds.

    lot being said in the comments 'bout the trio. I want to give a shout out to the drummer! He's tight in how he sounds and loose in how he looks and feels. He's MUSICAL!
    PS Wooten is amazing! He could easily replace a CC guitarist for a solo piece or a riff or two. Blends in and digs what Alex is doing! Blew my mind yet again...

    First time I have seen Alex Webster being stressed and sweating... imagine they tell you: "So, yeah dude, just do a base, nothing fancy, whatever you feel. Oh, by the way, Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey will play something upon your base."... Jesus. I almost felt the whole weight upon Alex. Maybe one of the best/most amazing and suffered moments of his carreer.

    I'm a fan of Webster, but this was pretty underwhelming. That said, I think it shows just how flexible Wooten is, and how incapable Bailey is when outside his comfort zone.

      *****
      You're suggesting that Bailey WASN'T terrible in this video?
      He's a far more talented bassist than I am... but I would have done a significantly better job than him in this situation. That's not hating, that's just the truth. He was out of his element and completely incapable of adjusting. He had to watch WOOTEN in order to have ANY idea of what to play. He was lost. Period.
      I guess I didn't get the memo where certain musicians have reached a level where they are no longer subject to people pointing out their weaknesses.
