Boy, if I took a shot every time you say "right here" I would be dead in under a minute, lol. No, seriously, thank you for a great learning video. I just started myself and it's kinda hard to hold the bigger Dremel tool for any length of time without my hand cramping up, So I bought the ones that you have in your box there. Much easier on the hands.

Beginner here! The flex shaft is great, I just got a Dremel 4000 and I went ahead and got the flex shaft along with it. Looking forward to making some wood spirit carvings and stuff to practice my way to success! I’d love to be able to make lots of neat little trinkets and stuff and get them homes out there in the world. It’s so exciting that maybe my little pieces of art will be displayed in someone’s home and stuff like that! Hehehe
Sorry for being 8 months late lol!

Just got my Dremel 4000 with the flex shaft today. Ready to jump into Dremel Wood Carving. So glad your video was one of the first I viewed. Your emphasis on basic concepts impressed me as the smartest way to proceed. Although appearing simple, boring, and repetitious, it reminded me of the Karate Kid, "Wax on, wax off". The basics worked for him as he won the championship and got the girl. Looking forward to your course and our other vids. Thanks so much.

Good tutorial. I've carved with a Dremel since the mid 90's. The only thing I would like to add is the harder the wood the quickly your bits will dull. It's easy to carve with sharp bits. I have always wanted to try a Fordham but yet to try it.

Loved the tip on pulling towards you to the left, then going back away from you to clean the lines. Quick question...I'm left handed, so... I just kinda go with what works, but can totally tell when it's wrong. I have been carving walking staffs so wood positioning gets tricky. (Have considered making a half round pvc set of sawhorses for it)
For carving flat more intricate flat work I bought 18 inch wood glues circle from home depot and modified it by adding the turntable from a $5 spinning picture frame cube from walmart. Makes more complex patterns easier to work with while still maintaining the hand stability.

    • @CorneliusCreations
      @CorneliusCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว

That is a good work around! So basically, just reverse everything if you are left handed, instead of pulling towards you, push away to eat at the wood. You can get used to this way or upgrade to a Foredom, which has a forward and reverse option! It is pricey but worth it :)

@@CorneliusCreations Sadly not an option at the moment but someday... I am interested in mixing media types. For instance, the current staff I am working on will use lichtenberg fractals vs the stipling you have demonstrated in other videos, as the negative space is large between the snowstorm clouds. Going the integrated red resin into the fractals to offset the blue. Top. Of staff has a selenite crystal with color changing leds inside over the reusable battery pack insert and a little on/off switch I wired up. Seal as much as I can in resin once it's done. Selenite is cheap and pretty, but water soluble. :(
Once, I am done I will send you picks of Winter's Fire.

New subscriber. Just got my Dremel 3000 with flex shaft for polishing/shaping resin, but I also do a lot of gilding and having seen this awesome workshop I’ll be getting the wood carving accessories so that I can make my own wooden shapes for gilding rather than having to use shop-bought shapes. It’ll be a long journey, but with this kind of instruction I have a lot more confidence. Thanks for the U.K. Amazon links - ’ll follow those if you’re on commission 😉. Great workshop.

Oooh Yes! Walking sticks are awesome! I'd love to have one but unfortunately they're kind of expensive. So maybe I'll try making my own too.
My dad used to grow shoemuck, not sure if it's spelling, trees. Basically a weed tree that grows fast & farmers hate. He had some that he grew tied over for canes too. But unfortunately moved before he could harvest it.
I'd love to do that & then carve them but I'm in an apartment.
But I am near a river & bits of wood. So hopefully I can find some tree limbs or something too.
Might try some shovel handles as well. Eventually once I'm better at this anyway.

The speed depends on the wood you are using and the burrs you use. Generally, the faster you go the smoother the cuts will be.

Hi, I went through all of your videos and didn’t see one on comparing rotary tools or engraving tools. Are rotary tools and engraving tools the same thing? I bought a cheap engraving tool off amazon for $30 which came with a decent selection of diamond tip burs and such but the ones with a larger surface area do not work. The larger surface area burs seize up the tool because it hasn’t the strength to effectively run them. Is the link below the tool you recommend for beginners? Are certain tools only used for certain types of work? I would like one you can use for almost all types of material. I almost bought a cordless Dremel 8220 but learn it only ran for 30 minutes before needing a recharge. Having to buy 4 batteries fully charged on standby would be such a pain.I really enjoy your videos and am really happy i stumbled upon them. Sorry if you have already answered these questions elsewhere. I tried to find as much information as I could but there isn’t much on this topic. Here is a list of my question to make it a little easier for you
    1. Are rotary and engraving tools the same?
    2. Is there a tool that can be used for most types of materials or are they more specific?
    3. This the link below the tool you recommend for beginners?
    4. Do you have a video comparing different rotary/engraving tools?
    5. Are the burs with welded carbonate tips a must have? How much improvement do you get from them oppose to a basic bur?
    6. Do you use dressing stones?
I will mostly be working on wood but would also like to do metal, glass, ceramic, and possibly a few other types.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

I think woodcarving and wood grinding are different things. I reed a lot about this art in TH-cam and must say there really are important things missing. Consider you have to make a living with your carving, how much time can you waste on sharping your tools? How your tools have to be if you carving human or animal figures, if you carve ornaments, you need sharp corners on most of your chisels. Also the dust while using grinders is not a nice byproduct, you need dust collectors , all that extra noise ,my friends not a very nice work environment. If you want to know what chisel brand to use, look at the traditionell schools , you can see, most of them use Pfeil, swiss made tools, I have a couple of hundred of them. Also I see people who don't like the handles on some of them, do you know those handles are available or you can make then easy yourself! Hold your Pfeil chisel in one hand and hit it on the top, the chisel will fly out and to reinstall a new one, get some dry shellac slivers, fill into the handle, heat op you chisel and forse it in! There are many thing to know and some people have all the answers . Also, never touch your wood with sandpaper before you are finished , you will ruin your sharp chisel !

    2. I ONLY have the standrad handpiece, NO flex shaf!.
    3. Carving bits are also NOT cheap for a decent set that is good enough quality for carving!
Need, need, need! If you don't get many new people for your classes. COST IS A HUGE CONSIDERATION!

My friend, would you rather walk on a vacation to the beach or drive there? Nothing is wrong with using hand tools or power tools. It’s all in your approach. Power tools doesn’t take away the art in it because the knowledge of how to carve it is still there.
You may prefer hand carving chisels, and that’s alright. That’s just your preferred method :)

I've heard it said that "sometimes you get what you don't pay for." Translated sometimes cheap isn't better. I'm saving up for the 4300. Maybe Dremel will have a discount for a late wood carving bloomer like myself. Can't believe I'm almost 67 and I can't wait to start carving. My Dad had every tool in the world but I tended to hurt myself with hammers and such. He joked about having me sign a waiver each time I borrowed one. But I digress . . . thank you so much for your videos. They are entertaining, educational and inspiring.

You won’t be disappointed with the Dremel 4300. I’ve had mine for a year or so and it’s marvellous. I use mine with a flex drive and hang it on the Dremel workstation. Coupled with the Kutzall bits, it cuts through wood easily.

Almost zero production! How long to make these contours? Hours? Fragile material, plastic Dremel that does not inspire any security with more than 10000 rotations and plastic! Much easier to contour with a chisel! We are working with pine, soft wood!

So... first, what if I don't have the bit that I used. I have diamond coated bits that look like nailheads, and some that look like verey fine to fairly fat pointed pins, some are cylindrical and some have ballheads. when you say you are using one like inveted cone carbide coated head, what is an alternative? Second, I have dremel user manual that shows the RPM speeds by material and catlog numbers. But, once the bits are out of their boxes or covers, or if they are a third party bits, how do you decide the RPM speed that you run dremel at.

I know I am over a year late in watching this but was hoping you wouldn't mind answering a question? I am going to do the practice piece with the triangle square and circle how do you know what speed to set your Dremel at?? Thanks again for making these videos and hope to hear back from you!

Hey Cory! I usually leave my Dremel's running as high as they can go as long as it doesn't burn the wood.

Dollar Tree's Crafters Corner now carries numerous wooden pieces of that softer wood for crafts.
There's both flat pieces good for starting out & other ready to be decorated pieces.
I definitely want that stronger drimmel!!!!
But I probably can't justify spending that much yet. But if I really get into it & I'm consistently doing things I'll try to get it.
