How significant is Taiwan former president Ma Ying-jeou’s visit to China?

  • Chinese President Xi Jinping met former Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou in Beijing on Apr 10, with both men urging for the peaceful resolution of differences. The meeting comes just weeks before Taiwan swears in new leader Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing openly dislikes. Ma, a senior member of Taiwan's main opposition Kuomintang party and a proponent of closer ties with China, is on an 11-day tour across the country. Associate Professor of political science Chong Ja Ian of the National University of Singapore breaks down the landmark meeting, and tells CNA’s Asia First what is at stake.

Ma's trip to the PRC has little significance to the mainstream position of the majority (over 80%) of Taiwanese who preferred to remain "status quo"and reject reunification. Ma's personal agenda may be fulfilled but he loses more support even from the reformists within his very own KMT.

Blame Tsai in wen for wiping out the Chinese culture within Taiwan, and manufacturing new history narratives for Taiwan and teaching kids misinformation. That's how you get the 80% figure.

📢"We will not pick a quarrel with China for US."
‘We do not have a problem with China’: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says if Western countries have problems with China "they should not impose it upon us".
Mr Ibrahim insisted that Malaysia can be friends with both China and the West.
"We are an independent nation, we are fiercely independent, we do not want to be dictated by any force," Mr Ibrahim said.
"So it remains to be an important friend to the US and Europe and here in Australia. They should not preclude us from being friendly to one of our important neighbours, precisely China.

Prof Chong is so misinformed about the Taiwan political situation and the Taiwan’s people desire. If he reads Chinese and speaks Chinese, I recommend him to go to the Chinese media outlets - choose a mix of more than 20 including LianHe Zaobao, CTI, CNS, TVBS, CTV, and various social media. He will realize that people appreciates the wisdom and efforts to promote peace. The trip does not only bring down the temperature, it brings to light the bond between the two sides and reminds people not to be made use by external forces to go into pointless war such as that in Ukraine. It is incorrect to say that 80% of Taiwanese rejects peace with China and/ or peaceful reunification. The very fact that DPP is losing majority in the parliament is a clear indication that their separatist policy is not what the Taiwanese people desires. What the Taiwanese people does not want is to surrender their political freedom today. Therefore, it is not reunification that Taiwanese people rejects but reunification under the current disparate political system that they reject. Let the Chinese people on both sides use their wisdom to find a way to resolve their differences and come back to the a same family. That is a message that resonant with majority of Taiwanese.

(China has indisputable sovereignty in South China Sea: Irish scholar)
"This is fundamentally a strategic struggle between China and America. I think that in the long term, America will lose." Irish Professor Anthony Carty told GT in an exclusive interview, showing China's indisputable sovereignty in the South China Sea.
From 2011 till the end of 2018, he went through a century of archives kept by foreign affairs departments in France, the UK, and the U.S. concerning the South China Sea. He published his findings in two papers five years ago, based on which a Chinese book titled👉 'The History and Sovereignty of the South China Sea' was published. 👈
During an exclusive interview, Prof. Carty told Liu Xin that these governments understood the disputed islands there belonged to China, but they had been bluffing for strategic reasons. "They need to be confronted."

Singapore, US and China has all use ex-leader to break ice, it is cheap politically since their position isn't official and so is less of a liability if it doesn't work, but generate positive relations. why do you think Singapore send Heng, an ex-prime minister in waiting and Teo a senior minister? why did we even create the post senior minister? it because we see the value and keeping the previous leadership to do the dirty work.
