Please explain to me how are government here in Canada is working for the people? It feels that every few months, the government implements some new tax for us. It’s death by a thousand cuts. We have high income tax, high sales tax, high fuel tax. The list goes on and on. The average Canadian is constantly in a state of where they can make cuts to their budget, but the government increases its spending like it’s a blank cheque.
I’m in the USA. I have a car that is no longer driveable but I haven’t decided yet if I want to sell it or fix it and I dropped the ins on it. But, I still have to pay property tax on it. Property that sits on my property of which I also pay tax on ! 🤬
This is happening globally: tax cuts for the corporations and the rich. Budget cuts for the government as tax revenues plummet. Increase in shareholder dividends. Decrease in worker benefits and salaries. The government prefers to borrow money with interest (bonds) than increasing taxes for the richest 1%. The richest 1% lend the money by buying these bonds. Inequality increases. Housing prices skyrocket. The endgame is a bankrupt government with poor workers and billionaires with monopolies.

I know that this is an unpopular opinion but nobody ever talks about this. A minimum wage was never intended to be a "living wage". A minimum wage is generally for entry level jobs intended for youth just starting there career or seniors who have retired and are looking to fill some of their time and maybe put some extra money aside for vacations or help top up their retirement. One of the reasons why Canada is so unaffordable for many is because there is a lack of high paying skilled jobs in this country. Because of these lack of job opportunities people in their prime working age are being forced to look for work and they are being pulled into these entry level jobs or positions below their skillset since nothing better for them is available. This in turn is pushing out youth and elder employment out of these positions and because these workers now holding these positions are people with much greater responsibilities (needing to pay rent or feed the mouths of their children) they are demanding higher wages which are pushing up wages in these entry level positions. This in turn is increasing the cost of goods being sold in grocery stores, fast food chains etc. When I was in high school I got a job at Canadian tire on my 16th birthday. I just walked in with a resume and walked out with a job. Almost all of my friends in high school either had a part time job or at least a temporary summer gig. This was because labour opportunities were available and plenty for youth at that age. I had no responsibilities other than homework and studying to get into University or college. So $7.50 an hour was nothing for me to complain about. This job paid off for a few items that I wanted to buy like a bike and cloths and I was able to save up a good chunk of money for my tuition over those 3 years working minimum wage. I also learned valuable lessons in those entry level positions in my teenage years. Now if you go into a Canadian Tire or a Tim Hortons or a grocery store you won't see a single worker under 20 years of age. None of them have this option available to them because middle aged workers are being forced into those jobs and pushing the youth out. It is sad.
I worked for McDonald’s when I was in high school and made min wage. It was just for extra spending money. After high school I went to college. But sadly, people have babies out of wedlock, drop out of school, don’t continue with job training or higher education and then wonder why they can’t support their family on min wage jobs ! Ugh ! Most of us low wage earners don't have a choice and I've worked with many educated people who can't find work because free trade took our long-term good paying jobs away.
The other thing is that jobs were replaced by technologies. When I finished school many girls became bank tellers and eventually find a career within the bank. There are very few teller jobs now.

In Canada, the longest fixed mortgage you can have is 5 years before it is up for renewal. And variable mortgage is also usually cheaper. The current problem is that everyone could afford a mortgage at 1 and 2% interest. Most pre-mortgages are coming up for renewal now (after 5 years), but while people could afford them at 2%, now they have to renew at 4, 5 and 6%.

Do those people not have a fixed mortgage? Their mortgage should never be going up.
