Hi Donn, thanks again for that. I don't think the food will last very long!! It's proving popular. I will send you a photo of the ambulances too. Our boys had great fun making them and colouring them in. Glad you liked the video. Thanks again, all the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop. 👍👍

On my shellac sealing sand bottle it says as a finishing coat you can do 50/50 shellac and methylated spirit. Is this okay to do? What are your thoughts or tips on that?

Hi, great to hear from you.
I would try it out on a small scrap of wood and see if I like the results personally. We soak the brush we use in methylated spirits between each coat of shellac. We are happy with the results.
Never tried that method myself so I would give it a go on some scrap wood and see if I like the results.

Our workshop always thin the shellac with 95% denatured alcohol so the whole coat dries faster, plus it'd make applying more smooth

Good stuff, whatever works well for you. We get a really smooth finish from Fiddes shellac sanding sealer too.

After sander sealer can u put shellac special pale on?

Hi, I would suggest contacting the manufacturer about that one. We use Fiddes shellac sanding sealer. We add three coats of shellac sanding sealer, rubbing down between each coat and then apply bees wax mixed with linseed oil as a final coat. The only other option would be to try it out on a scrap piece of wood and see how it comes up.

@@DailovespoonsThomas ok I thought shellac sanding sealer was an undercoat for shellac special pale?

Shellac sanding sealer is a finish in its own right. We add an extra coat of linseed oil mixed with bees wax afterwards but you can get great results from just using shellac sanding sealer. Our preference is Fiddes shellac as it brings out the character and colour of the wood whilst leaving the wood without a high gloss finish. It gives it a beautiful natural sheen.

@@omraz7864 wire wool can put scratches into the finish. We use a p240 sand paper between each coat of shellac and apply the shellac and wax with different brushes. 👍👍

Hi, all of our lovespoons are handcarved from seasoned hardwood. We use a wide variety of hardwood including Oak, Ash, Sycamore, Mahogany, Teak, fruit Wood, Elm, Iroko, Walnut and Holly to name a few.
The wood we use is mainly reclaimed from old furniture, fixtures and fittings. We also have a tree planting project on site here at our family workshop where we have planted in excess of 500 trees.

The term "sanding sealer" has often been misused in the wood industry and no doubt confused heaps of people. A "sanding sealer" is applicable for surface leveling and to ease the sanding process as an intermediate protective layer (e.g. shellac) below the final finishing (e.g. lacquer). In the case of the video, the shellac is probably the final finish. The shellac will also effectively block penetrating oils and if it works in your case, the shellac is probably diluted well below the 1 lb cut in a "sanding sealer".

Hi Ethan, thanks for the technical input. This simple process has served us well over the last fifty years and we recommend it to anyone who is interested in woodwork as a finish in its own right or being used together with another finish afterwards.
