- Bilder från Värmland till Jussis skönsång av Sveriges kanske allra vackraste visa. Fast han sjunger om Värmland så sjunger han samtidigt om hela sitt älskade fosterland : Sverige. Inspelningen är från 1936. Hade Jussi levt ett halvt år till så hade vi antagligen haft en stereoversion av sången idag. Han hade nämligen planerat att göra ett 20-tal nyinspelningar av sin gamla svenska repertoar någon gång i början av 1961. Att så inte blev fallet är såklart en katastrof för oss alla och den svenska folksjälen.

For those of you who do not speak Swedish: This most famous of Swedish songs is very special to the people of Sweden. In many ways it's almost like a second national anthem. Jussi's version was recorded way back in 1936. His untimely death in 1960 probably robbed us from now having a crystal-clear stereo recording of the song, as he was planning to re-record some 20 songs from his old Swedish repertoire in early 1961. "Värmeland/Värmland" is a beautiful province of central Sweden. If you haven't been there, you can now have a look at what it is Jussi is singing about, for all the images are taken from that wondrous part of my homeland. The monument at the start of the video is a map in stone of Värmland. The provincial animal of Värmland is the wolf, hence it's inclusion; and the flower at the end is called chickweed-wintergreen, the provincial flower. The Swedish name of the flower is so much nicer though: "Skogsstjärna" which means "Forest star". Enjoy. - เพลง

That is true, but in Pavarotti's opinion Fritz Wunderlich, who unfortunately died way too early, was at the same level as Björling as a "lyrical" tenor.
Sjöng den faktiskt tyst för mig själv när jag besökte Värmland för en tid sedan. Av någon anledning så började jag och mitt resesällskap sjunga på låten när vi körde in över gränsen. Kanske berodde det på att ingen av oss hade varit där på många herrans år. Sången är dock, som alla vi svenskar vet, magisk och en del av vår folksjäl.
Som utflyttad svensk blir jag nostalgisk och tårögd när Jussi Björling sjunger Ack Värmeland du sköna

Every time I listen to the wonderful voice of the great Jussi Bjoerling, one of the greatest singers of all time, I feel a great emotion, especially in this beautiful piece, in which he sings the beauty of his land: here his voice rises over the forests. and on the lakes with contemplative solemnity and mysterious melancholy and descends into the depths of the soul. May his name and his art be remembered for ever.

I felt the beautiful Swedish wind on my face while listening to this, made me feel sad and happy at the same time.
'Sad and happy' at the same time is the essence of Swedish folk music, at least to my ears... Or rather Scandinavian folk music in general, I would say... Sublime, no matter what!

I can still remember a time when each country has it's own distinct music, it's own distinct styles that we all enjoyed. In Western Europe that is all but gone, in Eastern Europe it is fading. I hate the brainless generic rubbish that is replacing it.

I'm an old Finn in America, and get homesick and very teary-eyed hearing this song.
It is almost an interstellar experience hearing Jussi sing. Each verse is as astonishing as the next, each one beyond belief. Makes me proud to be a part of this country and to be able to call Sweden my home.

Björling in fact is rated as the best lyrical tenor ever at the same level of Fritz Wunderlich. Björling's performance with baritone Merril in Bizet's Perlfisher duet (available at youtube) is spectacular as well.
Thank u so much for this video! When Jussi sings in Swedish there is something that is more intense than when he sings in any other language. I looked up the words in English & I can see why this song is special to the people of your country. The beautiful images are a perfect accompaniment to the song. I never get tired of hearing it!

I have only quite recently discovered Jussi Bjorling. How I have lived over 70 years and never heard of him I don't know. He is magnificent, and was taken from us much too soon.

His voice was always beautiful and glorious, no matter what his age! He always sounded a cut above the rest! RIP Maestro Jussi Bjorling, the greatest of them all! Never to be forgotten!

Let me educate all.When Jussi died he barely had a tombstone no museum no city statue his parents were poor and his father alcoholic and so was he. But when the world heritage commitee came for a visit they gave the city he was born in so much shit for not honouring this legend that today there is a museum and statue. Even Luciano Pavarotti said that he'd never be as good as Jussi. Jussi had a once in forever voice's..There will never be another like him.
