    I remember being on Shap that day with tripod and cameras shooting this event and getting frozen into the bargain while waiting for the Duchess’ arrival. Your lovely video, Stephen, has brought back happy memories of a great day out at a place which, living over here, now, I will probably never see again. Thanks for posting.

    Great video mate I was on the train.They obviously sorted the problem with the brakes out 46233 flattened both Ais Gill and Wilpshire on the return.

    Another masterful performance both by you and the loco !! Wonderful shot at Birkett with the snow on the mountains. That bl**dy wind at Shap again obscuring the train

    Fabulous Steve - great pan at Shap, in difficult cold conditions and with a slow moving subject. Birkett is heavenly - at least the sun stayed half out - stunning mix of performance and superb weather conditions. Many thanks, David.

      Linesider1 Thanks David , I find a slow moving train harder to pan but it worked ok in the end . I thought the sun was going to stay out at Birkett but it dipped at the last second !

    A green "semi" with a rake of maroon coaches - just as I remember it in the early 60s. Memories of annual trips to London, usually on the Royal Scot. Thanks a lot for this.

      @kennethcraig6275 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      wow Stephen, 16 bogies, what would the weight be? I have read 2 stories of Princess Coronations that i dont know if you can verify: one that they once had 2 firemen in full swing, but still couldnt get the maximum out of the loco,& that one actually beat Mallards record, but only by 0. 25 mph, so they did not bother to claim it??

    • @TheStephengthompson
      @TheStephengthompson  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Kenneth , it must have been some time ago as my late father worked at Scout Green in the the 40s so that was when as a norm he would watch the Duchess class romp up with 16 on . I did have ride behind 46233 in 2012 on the support coach and they had two lads firing her that day and they looked done in at Carlisle . Regards Steve

    hi stephen, lovely shots as ever.....
    could i ask a technical question?
    on my computer, i could not hear the sound of the loco until about 2.30. i wonder if that was really the case, due to the wind, or if the mike did not pick up the sound, but you yourself could hear it before??

      There was a great biography written by a signableman on the Settle and Carlisle but I can't remember the name. I remember him writing that the ionosphere would sometimes set the bells ringing by setting up induction currents in the telegraph wires. One he heard a single 'ting' and had the intuition that a loco was off the rails and had brought down wires. And he was right, setting all the boards to danger preventing disaster. Something told him it wasn't the atmosphere that was playing tricks. He could not say how he knew, he just did!

    Looked quite a slog up Shap, maybe it had been slipping and slowed it down. Couldn't have hoped for better light for the second camera, although pity the wind was the wrong way. Wonderful light on the hills in the last shot too, that cairn or whatever it is on top of the hill in the distance shows up very clearly.

      @@TheStephengthompson It's not whether she needed it, but Network Rail regulations require all steam drawn historic trains to have a backup Diesel Loco in case the Steam Loco fails as the local franchise operators don't have the expertise or equipment to link to a historic train.
