    Those are subangular blocky structures that are associated with heavy clay soils on the east coast. Use your location to look at the NRCS Soil Survey if you want to know more. That gray layer above it is where the water sits during wet times of the year, so the soil below it definitely doesn't perc.

    Shale is a sedimentary rock structure of fine layers of clay. It is semi-hard and can start a coal bed. It is the precursor to hard rock but hasn't been heated by a volcano structure. Then it turns hard as a rock. Like mentioned below good for clay bricks. Very little calcium for limestone layers if any. The blue is the precursor of coal.

  • @RKHarm24
    @RKHarm24 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Chris, No clue what the clay is called but when I help my grandfather build their lake cabin, we ran into the same clay. This was a shoreline lake lot on Douglas Lake between Dandridge and White Pine. We hit this layer of clay while digging the footings, BY HAND. I noticed if it got wet it would soften and make a slurry. The topsoil was sandy and decomposing hardwoods. This was in the mid 60's. When the lake was pulled down in the Winter, you could see the layers normally covered by water. Slicker than Owl Snot and did not clean out of tires. Stuck Chuck. I know this does not help your quest for an answer, but it is on the Tennessee side of the Mountains. One good thing, as we cleaned out the bottom of the footings with a square point shovel, this clay peeled out fairly easily, just not EZ to dig in. Another fine video.

    How hard is it to keep the smoke smell out of your cab @letsdig18? I ran rubber tire loaders and in the winter we would build a fire in a "bucket burner" as we called it, kept materials from freezing in the bucket and throwing off our scales or contaminating the different loads the trucks would get.
