Indoor Bonsai care

  • Learn how to care for your indoor Bonsai tree. Techniques like watering, pruning and fertilizing are explained for the most popular indoor Bonsai. Additional guidelines can be found at:
    www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-spe...
    Most Bonsai should be placed outside, where they are exposed to the four seasons just like normal trees are. Only tropical and subtropical plants can survive in the indoor climate of your house; where temperatures are high and stable throughout the year. The indoor tree species we think are best for beginners include the Ficus, Carmona, Jade tree and Chinese elm. Specific care guides can be found at:
    www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-spe...
    Caring for an indoor Bonsai is different from that of normal potted house plants. The main reason is that Bonsai trees are planted in small pots and therefore have limited storage for nutrients and water. More important is that tropical trees are used to much light and high humidity; circumstances that are quite difficult to create indoors.
    If you want to learn more about Bonsai, consider enrolling in one of our Online Bonsai Courses. For the curriculums and free lectures, go to:

      I have a ficus bonsai that I bought 2 years ago. Same thing with me, I had no idea how it survived to this day. I hadn't once fertilized it. I just water it weekly on summer with few mists here and there and every other week during winter. On a nice weather I placed it in my balcony then move it indoors on winter. I might have to repot it next spring cause the roots are starting to show from its pot but I'm scared to do it cause I might end up killing it.

    I have been growing an informal Silver Birch from a 1 year old sapling I collected from a local wood for 16 years, it is now around 20" high, has many branches, exposed roots, with a width of around 1.5" at the base of the trunk, and it lives happily indoors in a South facing window bay. Any indigenous tree you collect from outside your home can be grown indoors if the room atmosphere is kept similar to the outside environment.

    • @LukZel
      @LukZel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey could you explain a bit further "if the room atmosphere is kept similar to the outside environment"? I guess your room isn't around 0° Celsius during winter time 🤔

    • @funkydozer
      @funkydozer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LukZel I meant humidity levels and similar temperature ranges to outside, which next to a ventilated window, are self regulating. It's all good as long as you don't cook it in winter in front of radiators or freeze it in summer with aircon.

    I have to japenese maple bonsai growing inside with 2 grow lights above one producing blue and red light and one pure 6500k light led units. With a mini humidifier pulsing and a fan on super low circulating fresh air which is powered by USB very low power consumption with the whole setup. Trees are thriving. Lighting is set to match local sun patterns of outdoors. The whole setup didnt cost much at all to put together. Indoor bonsai can be done with any tree or plant of your choice. Its just mimicking perfect conditions and research. If anybody needs any help or advice setting a system up drop me a message and I can guide you though the process.

Not sure if it’s too much or not enough.

    Thank you for your video. I did join Bonsai Empire and will look into courses. I have the carmona fukien tea and I have 2 questions.
    1). I just got it a month ago and it looks like it has pellet fertilizer in the soil. There are so many inputs on fertilizing every month, every month during growing season, pellets vs liquid, and now this video says every 2 weeks. Not knowing what the nursery put in, am I safe with a liquid fertilizer every two weeks and all year long?
    2) When you prune, what does 4 leaves down to 2 mean. The whole branch seems to grow in pairs of 2.
    Thank you for your reply in advance.
    J

    • @bonsaiempire
      @bonsaiempire  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd follow the guidelines as stated on your product packaging. But a soft liquid fertilizer should be fine. And pruning - back to one pair of leaves or two pairs (depending on how long you want the shoot to be!)

    • @bonsaiempire

      Too much of a cold draft might harm the tree - so perhaps open another window further away from your Bonsai if possible?

    • @michaelsorensen7567
      @michaelsorensen7567 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Horticultural term "hardening off", and concept of "cold frames" may be helpful in understanding, but the short gist of it is you don't want crazy temperature/microclimate fluctuations. Many plants rely on temperature to tell them, for example, when winter is coming and it's time to shed leaves. Even without that the shock of frequent extreme changes can cause problems.
      If outside feels like inside, you're probably ok to open the window, but you may also introduce pests. 🤷‍♂️

      @michaelsorensen7567 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Solution should be fine, though depending on formula you may want to dilute a little extra.
      The main idea is to not have pellets or pills of highly concentrated fertilizer that will end up burning the plant roots, especially since bonsai don't have a large pot for excess fertilizer to dilute and spread to.

    Portulacaria, sometimes called "dwarf jade" is not closely related to crassula, true jade. They are in different families. In fact portulacaria afra can be used as a food, as people in its native range do, whereas crassula is toxic. I have to clear that up because they are not at all the same thing even if they appear similar superficially.

    • @bonsaiempire

    I’m confused; the instructions that came with my Ficus Microcarpa says it needs indirect lighting but you’re saying to place that type of plant right by the window for direct light. It’s started to lose a lot of its leafs, even though I water it regularly. Like you said, it probably is because it’s not getting enough sunlight? I also have wetted the leafs but they get white spots stains. Could it be mold? Could that be what’s killed my leafs?

    • @bonsaiempire
      @bonsaiempire  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ficus are trees and hence need lots of light. Ignore the label and place it in lots of light and make sure it NEVER dries out but at the same time isnt wet constantly - no worries about white spots for now (though you can upload a photo on our forum to get some advice - www.bonsaiempire.com/forum). Good luck!

      If you keep a tree indoors it doesn't matter much where you live? It does matter a lot which tree species you select though, only some tropicals do well indoors.

    Good day!
    I would like to ask about pumice and lava rock. They are abundant here in ph and cost nothing. Is it good to only use those two for my bonsai mix? I have found fir bark but they are expensive compare to the pumice and lava rock. My main concern is they might not hold enough water and nutrients specially we are a tropical country. I could buy akadama but they are expensive as well. To give you an example here are the pricelist of the few aggregates I have found here in ph.
    Pumice is around .40 - 1 dollar per kilo
    Lava rock is almost the same
    akadama cost around 3.11-5.20 dollars per 500g
    The fir bark (repti bark) cost 7.67 dollars in 8.8L
    Zeolite is around 1 dollar per 500g
    I would like to know your opinion about best substrate to use because I'm new to bonsai. Thank you!

    • @bonsaiempire
      @bonsaiempire  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kenneth, Im not familiar with the exact climate in the PH, so I'd recommend you to experiment. Put several seedlings in a mix of solely pumice and lava rock, and a few seedlings in pumice+lava+akadama, as well as pumice+lava+fir-bark. You'll see what works best!

      Charlton is incorrect. I don't what a "room pine" is, but podacarpus, a member of the yew family known as "Buddhist pine" or "Chinese yew" that comes from the tropics can be grown indoors given proper conditions for the species. It's not as easy to do as ficus or schefllera that is common houseplant material and do well with everyday artificial light, but it's certainly possible to have it thrive if you learn what it needs. It became a favorite because it's an indoor bonsai species that looks like an outdoor bonsai. Bonsai empire talks about the species here: www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/podocarpus

    I'm new to bonsai and I am working on a Juniper...I have had it about 2 years and I repotted it about six months ago. Being in Arizona and living in an apartment, I've decided to use indoor UV lighting. I usually run both blue and red lighting for about 6 hours a day. I've been having some difficulties, though...there are a few brown and yellow leaves scattered throughout. I've tried pruning brown leaves a few times in the past but I'm always worried those spots won't grow back. I usually water it every night. I'm just not sure if I'm watering it wrong or if I'm lighting it too much...Google is not much help. Every time I try to research bonsai maintenance, I get contradicting information.
