    Today's Samaritan community in Israel has dwindled to just some 800 souls. They do not consider themselves Jews but proudly declare themselves to be part of the Children of Israel. As a community in Israel they are unique in being entitled to carry both Israeli and Palestinian Authority ID cards. One of the Samaritans I came across on TH-cam rejoices in the name of Abdullah Cohen. Another is called Benny Sadaka...

      I've met Benny Tzedaka! I visited him for my book and he had an excellent story about why the Samaritans now live in Holon.

    I don't understand how all of the stereotypical traditional Jewish foods are impossible to make properly in Israel. They don't have the right potatoes, they don't have the right spices, I don't understand how they end up like this.

    • @SamAronow
      @SamAronow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      1. Israeli cuisine very deliberately embraces local and Sephardic cuisine as part of the Zionist ideal of rejecting European influence and using the native resources of the land. The vast majority of Ashkenazi food is entirely foreign to Israelis just as Yiddish is, and I don't see why it shouldn't be so.
      2. Cayenne pepper in matzo balls is just a me thing.

    • @flastable9842
      @flastable9842 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@SamAronow I wish Israeli society would “own” its European roots along side it’s Middle Eastern roots and celebrate them together. Although they tried to remove the cuisine of Ashkenazim, the concept of democracy, the rule of law, human rights, etc are very much European influences ideas.
      So in some ways Israel is extremely European.

    You should do a video on why Genesis keeps mentioning Haran and the land around it and why it seems to have been so important to a certain sector of the Israelite people. The story of Jacob takes place to a considerable extent in the region of Haran. Abraham's brother Nahor and his family not only settle there but appear to be land owners. When Abraham commissions his (unnamed) servant to find a wife for Isaac the servant travels to Haran. When Jacob is fleeing from the wrath of his brother (or is he going to look for a wife) he too travels to Haran, So, clearly, the place had some importance to someone back then.

    I don't think I'd ever manage to convince my Polish family to add any sort of taste to our Matza ball soup... Maybe one day I'll get to taste what this recipie is like.
    Also, around 6:30, the subtitles say "Diesel golf" and "Decent Gulf" instaed of "Dizengoff". You may want to change that.
    Edit: Another one I noticed: around 9:10, Or said "The Paleshet, or the Plishtim", or "Peleshet/Philistines" if you want to use the common english names, not Palestine/Pristine as the subtitles say.
    Edit 2: At 13:28 I assume you said "Lesotho"? Because youw ere talking about surrounded countries. The subtitles say "Listened to".
