I just run a claymore and use the range on the spells when I'm feeling lazy. Kinda hard to justify using melee magic when I put so much time into the claymore moveset. Only exception is adula's moonblade for sheer coverage.

This is a lot like the first build I made in Elden Ring when I played on Xbox except I used the Erdtree Great Spear. I may need to remake it of ps5 with these weapons instead, but that shield however situational can do some work. This video resparked my my interest

Neither has a projectile. I think the point of the build is to deal with mage spam at range, so when they stop spamming and the shield is no longer useful, you cue up your projectile. You WANT mages to spam you. So you use your own ranged abilities to encourage them.
Unless they spamcast "as an strategy to win" and are backed up by pokespammers or rakshasa tards they aint doing much. Yesterday a mage gifted me 287k runes at rl 87 by accwpting my hefty fire pot

As a faith enjoyer and player, i love this build ! I have been using this spear (not in PvP though) since envoy Longhorn has been nerfed. The Shield is just so fun !

Spell reflection only works on noob mages. Easy counter is star shower. Charge it and wait for the counter and dodge. Rinse repeat.
