GMade XD Piggyback Shock 93mm GM21107 Review - A Year On

  • Since the video I made a year ago proves quite popular to this day, I thought I'd give my thoughts after a year of ownership on these shocks.
A note to the video - they come with their own fluid which I used, not sure of the weight rating.
They've been run on both the SCX10.2 chassis (under the Marauder shell all through 2018 until this last month) and on the carbon fibre SCX10 chassis under the police Comanche hardbody more recently.
You can get yours from all good RC stores, but in the UK I'd recommend Modelsport:

Thanks for the long term follow up. These reviews are far more important than an initial review and I appreciate you taking the time to do this. Mine are coming in the mail soon for my MST CFX. The 75mm gives me an extra 5mm if ride height which is what I wanted- a small increase in height so I don’t throw my CG off too much and risk constant rollovers. Cheers
I also like how these shocks have the “pillowball” cushion at the base of the shaft for when they bottom out. I don’t typically see these on any shocks I see out there.

Thanks for the encouragement! Yes those bumps stops are important I feel, tho they do limit the piston stroke somewhat.

Yes.... perfect overview of these shocks. I have these on my JK project, and you nailed it! I feel exactly the same. I love them but probably wouldn’t buy them again. 👌🏻😎👍🏻

Cheers Bill. Good shocks. Just with added "pointless" 😊

The locking solid and lack of effective adjustability from these I think is because the instructions are wrong. They tell you to push the main piston all the way to the bottom whilst holding the contra piston also to the bottom of the piggyback cylinder. If instead you hold the main piston fully out whilst screwing the seal assembly in, when assembled compression of the shock will cause the contra piston to compress its internal spring. This can't happen if assembled by the instructions.

Ahhh interesting! Makes some sense, tho I'm no expert, because clearly they've made a big effort technically with these so to have such little real adjustment is weird. Next service, I shall remember your words friend, thanks for this.

Where did you get the soft/med/hard springs?

Hey fella, without knowing where you are, I'd suggest finding the part number on gmade's site - under shocks and replacement parts - then Google that part humber. Google will concentrate on local suppliers for you. 👍

So basically they look good more than being practical.

Well it's a nice idea, the pressurising option, but in practice esp with the lack of marks to line up it is impossible to get 4 shocks balanced without endless faffery. And even I have my limits. As a set of shocks, they are very good. But if the none-PB ones have more travel, then I'd get them next time around.
