    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The smoke actually helps quite a bit with those grumpy hives. After you go into the second box though, not much matters. I use the smoke to move the bees away from where I need to work, or to set the boxes down. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care.

      You smoke them a lot. Too much.

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you break down the hive like this, more smoke is needed to keep them inside the box so you don't smash bees. They also get more aggressive when you break the hives apart like this. I don't smoke them like this for normal inspections, unless the hive gets aggressive. I have a couple hives that are pretty rank.

    Great video , I must have missed it before, why do you use those slated racks

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Kajun. That's one of my older videos that must have gotten suggested to you. The slatted racks add some space between the brood frames and bottom board, so in the early spring, it's a little warmer there and the queen will be more likely to lay in that area, and later in the summer it provides additional space for the bees in the hive, so less swarm urge. They aren't essential and I don't have them on all my hives, but I think they do add some value. Not sure if it's worth the extra cost though. Thanks for watching.

    What are your thoughts about reducing from 2 deeps back down to one if they are only say 2.5 to 3 frames of brood on the top and the bottom is completely empty of bees and brood? I've always reduced down to one brood box for a few weeks until the population ramps up again and then added the deep back. That is, if I don't have hives around that I want to equalize frames from. Whenever I reverse boxes and the top box is not doing that great coming out of winter, they expand up and ignore the outer frames on the bottom box.

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Wild B. That’s a good question. I definitely will reduce down to one box and sometimes take a few frames away because they can’t protect the comb from hive beetles. It also depends on how many hives I e done and how tired I am. lol. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Won't the queen go up and down? What would happen if you didn't switch boxes and just added a honey super?

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bees naturally move upward. If the brood chamber has moved to the top over winter and the bottom is empty I rotate them. It’s common practice for a 2 deep hive setup.

    Hi, just one question, what is the purpose of that slatted rack? Thanks.

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The slatted rack gives more space between the bottoms of the frames and the bottom board. It basically gives the bees a little more room at the bottom. Helps a little with ventilation and gives them more room. Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • @maxiemassengale189
    @maxiemassengale189 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It seems that alot of people under super. That would not work if they only move up. Dont bees also hang comb from the top, so if you put a super on top there is a chance they start building comb from the bottom. Plz tell me if I should or should not under super.

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I’ve never heard of under supering before. I always put them on top. My bees usually work their way upwards. If something below them is empty and suitable and they need the space, I think they would use it, but it would probably be used less preferred than above space in the same condition. Also, my honey supers have drawn comb ready to fill.

      My thoughts too, but honestly wouldn't expect to see it that heavy in a HEALTHY Colony... from what I read, and saw in mine, as long as the hive is still thriving, they clean excrement up, it's when they get sick, and weak that it's easily noticeable,, But I also noticed mine had a lot of crystallized honey they ate around, they ate the liquid, and left the crystals

    What’s that slatted rack on the bottom for?

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there - love your name. lol The slatted rack give the bees more space away from the bottom board and allows the bees to keep it warmer down low by the entrances and they can build brood closer to the bottom - that's one thing. Basically it gives them more space. Some say it helps with swarming, others say they are a waste of money. lol The first beehive I bought had one, so I thought it was something you always use, but it's optional. I have about ten or so on my 30ish hives. I don't plan on buying any more, and I also plan on going to all solid bottom boards instead of the screen bottom that has the insert to close it off. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @1wildwackywoman
      @1wildwackywoman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jerome Bee Farm & Homestead What’s ur theory on solid bottom board? Don’t they need the airflow? I keep my ‘sliders’ in oct - March (about 3/4th of the way in most of that time but if I know the temp is going to drop below 30, I’ll push them all the way in.. I live in damp Pacific Northwest. I’m a Newby going on 3 years, so still learning.

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@1wildwackywoman I'm about to decide I like the solids better because none of the Oxalic Acid fumes escape with the solids. The ones with the slide in bottom leak out quite a bit. I really haven't seen any difference between my hives that have solids and the ones with the screens and inserts. It's a real pain painting those screened ones, and they are expensive and flimsy too. I'm not buying any more in the future.

    I harvest honey from the brood nest this time of year. I leave three or four frames to get them through any cold snap that might happen. This gives them more room to raise brood.. The dearth will happen starting April where I live. I actually want my bees to build swarm cells so I can make splits. I remove the second brood box and that increases their chances for building swarm cells.

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good technique if you have a long season. You must live in a southern region. Nectar flows in my area aren’t typically that strong in central Oklahoma. Last year was an exception and I did harvest some deep frames in July. That was one heavy box. lol. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @sharkdogs25longappendage24
      @sharkdogs25longappendage24 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeromeBeeFarm I'm in Southern Colorado. I'm not sure that you have a shorter season. I don't pull the honey out of the brood nest until warm weather. I actually did it yesterday Our Dandelion bloom is the first nectar coming in about two weeks. They have been bringing in pollen for about two weeks and my first inspection was he 11th of March. I move my bees to a huge orchard next week and the fruit trees are the biggest flow and Russian olive 2nd last until mid July.

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh. I see, you’re talking about honey carried over through winter. I actually had three hives with excessive honey and I spread it around to other hives and added some blank frames. This is the first year I’ve seen this here. In the past, I was always expanding and splitting. Since I’ve got to 20 hives I quit forcing splits. I only split swarming hives now. This is my 7th year.

      OkieRobs is that because you live in a warmer state. My hive was light with honey last Nov 2018 and I had to feed them through the winter feeder box all winter right up to the 2nd week in May. We've had a very wet and cold spring by the ocean here in Mass. It was finally a warm enough day and night on Sat (temps have been falling way down at night) to inspect the bottom box. Nothing much in them. The top box has no capped honey and the bees are feeding on the fondant and sugar patties through the feeder box and are finally bringing in nectar. If you are in a warmer state, about how much honey does your bees feed on during the winter months? Just wondering.

    What is the slatted rack for?

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Blair Korchinski hey Blair, thanks for watching and commenting. The slatted rack gives the bees more room in the bottom so there is less bearding in the summer and some say the queen will feel she has more room and not overcrowded so less tendency to swarm. It also keeps the brood higher up off the bottom so the queen will lay out the whole frame and not leave space at the bottom.
