i think the holes on the bottom are only needed if you were stacking totes so worms can migrate between bins. i would be worried about curious worms escaping and dying

Peat moss and coco coir acts more as a carbon source. Grit are things like ground up egg shells, sand, and coffee grounds. It helps break down materials in their gut. I just wanted to clarify that.

Why does every TH-camr go straight to buying everything. You can literally just have worms come in and out of your compost bins from your own backyard. This will make your soil better not just what’s inside your bins. And it’s not like it’s a bad thing for a few worms to escape. Trust me I’ve done this without spending a dime and had real nice blood red worms 🪱.

Yep, good explanation in a short video, I paid $50 and 6 hours in a class to learn what you explained in 60 seconds. But did get a pound of worms.

This is not a good build. Same totes, same holes and followed instructions. Works are escaping

You don't need to use worms

Your worms are trained not to climb up the sides and escape through the holes?? I got cheated!!

  • @GrowCookPreserveWithKellyDawn

Please, no. Just use contact with real soil and the natural/native soil biota. Feed them real organic substances (kitchen scraps, garden refuse, egg shells, manure, etc. ) and soil biology will do all the work for you. And your plants will thank you. This is the way it should be. Most earthworms (including red wigglers) are not native to North America and do more harm than good. Scientists in the Northeast are reporting a real problem with earthworms. The invasive worms are destroying the rich carpet of organic matter on the forest floor and may be causing a major shift in the delicate balance between the soil and the plants and the animals that need it to live.

Does the tote need to be food safe plastic?

It is possible to raise quails in the same area. Waste from the kitchen and garden is given to the quails, and whatever they don't eat can be eaten by the earthworms that are under the quails. That's how you get eggs along with hummus.

  • @toddkyle3691

I think you want to stack this tote on top of another to collect the drainage. Also, i think its better to make larger 2.5-3in holes on each side of tote and seal with screens to prevent flys.

Great in a nutshell explanation! I run my indoor totes slightly differently. No lids, no holes made in the totes whatsoever. But I do the feeding and migration just as you described. It's a great hobby with huge payoffs for the environment and my garden!
