Welcome to the Mac. I'm 70, but I switched away from Win when that awful 2000/ME rubbish landed. It isn't always roses here, but to me it's far more intuitive. Gary is a great resource for learning, no fluff, no clickbait, just clear instructions. macOS is a constantly changing environment, but Gary keeps up to date. He's a must watch for me. Enjoy.
Gary is great at making things simple and understandable, which is a great help in learning the Apple Ecosystem. I'm in the same boat...it's never too late to learn something new and better. I'm just sorry I didn't make this move years ago!
Thank you, Gary, again for your clear and instructive videos. I am still learning how to use my iMac 24" M1. For example I can´t transfer photos for Photos app which is located in the external hard drive. Maybe some day I can.
This is terrific, thanks! I've been using Macs for - lol, we'll just say a looong time 🦖- and just found this channel recently. I've been learning so much here! I have an Automator workflow set up to change spaces in filenames to underscores. I'm glad I learned how to do it and I use it a lot, but this will be really handy.

Far out. I knew all of this except the Command/Shift to assign order to the selection. That's great, and explains something that I thought might be a bug.. Thanks Gary.
When it comes to renaming the file extensions that can cause file corruption. Say rename .png to .jpg to reduce photo size, unless it is done by software that is reprocessing the it does not work. Does the mac OS reprocess or just rename?
Converting a file format and renaming are two different things. Changing the file extension does nothing except confuse any app you now try to open the file with.
Always enjoy your Mac tips. I use Adobe Bridge to batch rename my files but this method will be great to add to my toolbox. I ran into a problem with about 1700 files where I need to add a dash in the middle of the file name…I believe this is my solution….Bridge won’t do it
I keep pdfs of utility bills, prefacing them with the appropriate dates e.g. (in European date sequences) for example: 2024_07_03_Edison and will fiddle to see if I can batch rename and reorganise when varying dates are already included using asterisks or whatever. Many thanks as usual.
This is great, my obstacle is I'm looking for a tool that can add the timestamp, but I would want to add a unique timestamp to each file and not the same, do you know of another way to obtain this?
If you want to name each file something different, then "batch" rename isn't what you want. If only you know the name of each file, you have to do it manually. Your Mac can't know what you are thinking.
Hey Gary, I have a question I hope you can help with - I work in an office which has an Apple Time Capsule connected to our local network for shared file storage (we all use MacBooks). Currently to backup the Capsule, I use the 'Archive Disk' function on AirPort Utility to back up all our shared files to a 10TB External HDD. I have to run this over the weekend when the office is closed because it takes so long. Is it possible to use Time Machine so that I can run hourly backups of the data on the Capsule instead? This way the backups would be much more frequent. We have no IT dept as its a family business so your videos have helped me a lot with various things, thank you for your work!
Hard to say for sure without being there to see your setup, but you should be able to do a TM backup over your network. Maybe not to that exact drive. Depends on a lot of things. If you are still using AirPort Utility and Time Capsule then it sounds like a lot of things may be out-of-date there.
Yeah very useful coming from decade old MBP user, but when you assign shortcut for it, it never works. However, once you click the menu bar once the shortcut works.
Question. I would like to rename a bunch of videos but only want to remove part of the title. What do you do in this case? I would like to remove the square brackets in the title but leave the rest as is. Example: [S01. E01] Video Title and I would like it to be S01. E01 Video Title. How can I remove the square brackets, and have it continue with all the videos? S01. E02 Video Title, S01. E03 Different Title, S01. E04 New Video Title. Can do one video no problem, but when I do more than one it will give a season and episode but removes the title of each episode. So all I end up with is S01. E01 and no video title. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Just use this technique to replace [ with nothing. Then again to replace ] with nothing. But removing the video title text can't be done with this function as it would be different for each file I presume.
Sometimes, if I copy and paste text to rename, I get an error message about having symbols so I have to paste and then delete the spaces between each word and re add the space to get it to accept the change. It's very tedious and annoying. Do you know of a solution for this?
@@macmost I thought so, but they were all of one kind, produced automatically by a website. I copied the sequence from the file name and pasted to the window in the rename interface and had this problem recur. After repeatedly doing this, it did work in the end. Maybe there IS a little bug here.
i tried a test, (img_210.jpg thru 213) i wanted (“deer on tatnic rd 1” thru 4) no matter how i tried it wouldnt replace all the text to new text, it left img_210 or .jpg you couldn’t get rid of all the text in the name. if you use format name and index then command option i and hide ext, that works, is that the easiest way?
@@bikeman5 Yes, you absolutely NEED the file extension there. If you don't want to see it for some reason, then using the hide extension option is fine.
As a newcomer to the Mac (at age 60+...) I'm so grateful for your Videos, Gary!

How do you change the number of zeros with counter? Like only having a single 0?
You can't. But you can always do a second replacement to take 00 and replace with nothing, so 0001 becomes 01, etc.
is there a way to do the Index renaming without keeping the existing file name? So my files would just be 1.jpg, 2.jpg, etc.?
Yes. I show that in the tutorial.
Hi I want to do this kind of thing on the iPad it’s possible to do it ?
Not really. The Files app isn't as sophisticated as the Mac Finder.

is SF Pro Regular default used by mac?
The SF fonts are used for most parts of macOS, if that is what you mean.

Not sure what you are experiencing there. What is your copy source? Maybe that source text is using special spacing characters?
Very long filenames with apostrophes etc sometimes don't get changed when one does a batch rename. Seems like a bug.
Maybe the apostrophes are sometimes the straight kind (') and sometimes the curvy kind (’) ?

It should leave .jpg yes. That's the file extension. You don't want to remove that.
