I'm simply amazed by the opportunities that open up here for an ordinary (i.e. non-IT expert) user with just a simple Mac. Thanks so much, Gary, for explaining all that's possible with a Mac!
Gary, this is a lifesaver. I've tried a number of times over the years and have been frustrated and stymied. I've tried to do it with a variety of programs or a convoluted series of applications. It never occurred to me to try and use the Voice Memo app. Than you so much. I've watched a few of your videos over the years, but now its time for me to support you on Patreon. Thank you!
By far the most useful channel for Mac users! You always get straight to the point, cover topics in detail, and whenever I ask a question here, you always respond with a great answer. Thank you so much!
Love the channel and the videos. I always find it amusing when someone shows how to take an audio file, turn into text and then back to audio (when you clicked the play button @ 4:00). A comedian has a bit about that. He tells of a teenage boy that was telling his dad how technology has advanced. The dad says, "What do you mean?" The teen says, "Well, now you can take and audio file or speak into your computer, it can take that audio and send it to someone in a text, and when the person gets it, they can click a button and it can read it back in audio". The dad says, "Don't let Alexander Graham Bell find out!"
In recent years, for reasons I can’t explain here, I have had to use other video platforms that are not as sophisticated as YT. They can’t show a transcript which I need for archiving and research. The videos can be saved in many formats, including sound only. I’m in the process of moving from an old Intel Mac to the latest Mini and can’t wait to try these methods!
@macmostvideo We have had Macs exclusively in our home since our very first computer, the Mac SI back in 1989ish. 15 or so (we've lost count) Macs later, I am still not using the full functionality of these phenomenal machines to their full potential. Thank you Gary! Subscribed and saved....
Thanks, this worked well. I ran into a weird problem when testing an m4a file created using Zoom, and wanted to share my experience (esp. since I found a workaround). When I record a meeting in Zoom, besides a video recording, it also records a separate audio recording as an m4a file. When I bring that file into Voice Memo and try transcribing it, an error results: “Couldn’t transcribe audio.” There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with it, as it plays fine when I opened it in QuickTime. To get around this, I used QuickTime to export the file, and the exported file transcribes just fine. It’s weird because the original and exported files are the same type (m4a) and size.
You don't need a (Apple Silicon) Mac for this. An iPad with an M-series processor or an iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, or 16 and later will also do the transcriptions from the Voice Memos or Notes app. You can even use an Intel Mac for part of the process. Just the final transcription step has to be done on the iPhone/iPad. Note: Anyone know when this is coming to languages other than English? That would be very useful.
I use Mac dictation a lot or better I used to, but find it quite inaccurate. Have a look at the software Mac whisper the dictation is like yes ahead S is the transcription. This was dictated via iOS, and none of the arrows at present would have happened via Mac whisper
hi Gary question: Do you know which iPad models support the transcribe feature? I have an iPad Pro 2018 with the latest iPadOS but dont see the option to transcribe. Do you know if there is a list of supported devices?
Let me teach you how to find this out: Just go to Apple's iPadOS 18 page (www.apple.com/ipados/ipados-18/) and go to the "All New Features" section. Look for the feature, in this case "Live Transcription." Then look for the footnote numbers. Check those at the bottom of the document and it shows which models are compatible.
@@macmost first of all thank you for this info, it will be very handy . But now I am even more perplexed because my model shows as supported A1980 (3rd gen , I have the latest iPadOS and still nothing. weird thing is that on my iPhone it works perfect so it is not regional.
Hi Gary this is outside this topic but I would appreciate your help. I have two I macs both running latest version and browser,I am running windows 10 on both machines,I am running a program from lava guitars ,it runs fine on the newer Mac,but on the older Mac when I type in the address,it simply takes me to a page with links for downloading the app and lava music home page and products etc.Can you please offer me any reason why this is happening and how ,if possible I can overcome it Thank you
Sorry, I'm not sure what you are experiencing. Is that a Windows app and you are running both Macs as Windows machines with Boot Camp or something? That's not something I can help with.
You can see from my previous post that I was impressed by Dictation on the Macmini. However, strange things are happening. Ssometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it works after restart today it doesn't that what I mean by not working is key f5 nor a double click on the on the function key make any difference, it just doesn't connect. But if I going to notes and I want to make a note, what I can do is I can speak it, make a record recording of it, and when I stop that, I get a transcript of it. But I can't copy it! So to get it as text I have to send it as an email to myself, then I can just and paste the text, which is what I am doing here. which is what I'm posting here. This is very weird. I've been on to Mac help. They have no solution. Is it only me or are other people experiencing this problem? I'd really like to know and by the way, the a dictation within the Microsoft package I use Microso word works perfectly. OK. Thank you.
I suggest the base (free) version of MacWhisper which is based on AI training. Works pretty well in English and not so bad in French (probably other languages). Paid versions increase accuracy.
That's very nice! Thank you! It's a shame I don't have Sequoia on my Mac... Can you show how to record system sound with the Voice Memos? I want to capture non Zoom calls without using third party apps.
You can drag and drop a memo out, yes. I've been using the Apple Intelligence AI summary tool, since it is built in. Before that ChatGPT and also Claude sometimes.
This is Great! I usually use the built in shortcut (iPhone) text-speech and then upload the file and on the Mac. And change the format file, so I can use it on captcut or FCP. Ps. Have you gotten a new mic. It sounds really crisp and clear. What model is it? Accessories?
@@macmost Ah, never mind brother. I found out. What I meant was how do I take an mp4 file downloaded from apple music and convert that file into wav/mp3. Also, you create great vids! :)
Not reliable at all. Even clear American English pronunciation is misunderstood, e.g. Does she have to pay for robust pass from her pocket money? (her bus pass)...whatever she buys is always a steel at this price (steal).

The things built in to MacOS just continue to improve. Great video, I had heard this could be done but had no idea how.
