    The big 10 has footprints in major markets: Chicago, LA, PA (Philadelphia, Pittsburgh), DC, Maryland (Baltimore), NYC/ NJ metro area, Indianapolis, Detroit, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Ohio (Cleveland and Cincinnati)- no wonder that deal was so much

      The population footprint o the big 10 is a lot larger than the sec. Also I think the student population is much higher. I read an article a few years about how the big 10 is playing the long game. All of these graduates leave and spread out around the country and they are planning on them spending money to watch the games. It seems like a good plan for the moment.

      That's the thing about it though. Out of all of the networks ESPN is still the only one that covers sports 24 7 and college football extensively. The other networks cover it mostly on Saturdays and maybe a couple of other shows throughout the week. So even though the Big 10 made this deal with the other networks, we are still going to be hear most college football news coming out of ESPN.

    As a buckeye fan, I can truly say I hope the BIG AND the SEC stay put where they are at right now. I believe that college football as an entity is strongest with more conferences not fewer, in addition, I know nobody wants to hear it or cares to listen but creating two mega conferences will crush a large number of good football programs, and in turn crush many athletic departments which will hurt those institutions and ultimately hurt athletes. The more successful football programs that exist means more Olympic sports at those institutions which means opportunities for students to earn a scholarship to a good school and get an education. I know that this is football and it matters most, and I care just as much as everyone else I’m a freaking buckeye, but just because football and to some degree basketball has become something not so similar to collegiate athletics doesn’t mean the same has happened to the vast vast majority of scholarship awarding sports in college. These schools and athletic departments create better lives for students who often need the most help, wrecking that system nationally would be a major step backward in this country. And secondarily, I truly believe that if we get to a two team model that the sport will ultimately decline both in fandom and in revenue. Right now, the BIG and SEC have cemented themselves as the top dogs and have guaranteed themself a large financial advantage over everyone else, why would you wanna give that advantage away by inviting more teams to the club, and as a result shrinking the number of teams in the sport.

    • @johnnyp5216
      @johnnyp5216 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@heartbreak25 I get adding ND. I really think it would be bad for college football if the PAC12 or 10 ceases to exist. And if we pluck some combo of Washington Oregon Stanford Cal that league will fold and so will big time college football for the most part on the West Coast. Sure there will be some BIG teams out west but those other programs will be relegated to the Mountain west or the WAC and those programs and their athletic departments will be kneecapped. Killing off a ton of good programs on the west coast can’t be good for college football as a whole or overall fan interest in the sport. We need eyeballs to increase revenue, if you kill off your fan bases eyeballs will dissipate.

      Correct. Advertisers Care About EYES and Audiences.
      Yes, SEC constantly talks about their Football Quality (sounds like a Cadillac dealer),
      BUT never mention any other college sport.
      The “cut the cord” (away from Cable TV) audiences are rewarded.
      ESPN constantly trying to get ESPN+ subscribers (streaming)
      (for 12 months ESPN Support could never get it working with my Android Sony TV)
      CBS swaps from SEC to B1G for their 3:30 game. Next Year only, CBS has SEC & B1G.
      CBS big winner in B1G basketball, adding regular season games.
      NBC big winner.
      Doubleheader with Notre Dame afternoons for Home games and
      8 pm ET B1G night time game. Watch NBC bring an NFL style feel to their broadcasts.

      Thing is, the alumni bases for the Big Ten schools are much, much larger than the SEC. The SEC may have a greater number of more rabid fans, but not a greater number overall. SEC = Alabama + 1 every year the past 15ish years. Mainly due to Saban who is prob the GOAT. Their fans are pretty loyal, mainly cuz they dont have a big market for pro sports outside of ATL, Nashville, TX (TU and OU will help more), and FL (which is honestly more ACC/Group 5 dominate). They produce a lot of great football players locally, so thats going to continue to help. And the weather does help a lot.
    But with B1G expansion, they have the largest cities population outside of ATL, DFW, & Orlando (where ever they fall), cover East to West (with sunny Cal avail now, thats huge for local players), and just solid football. Lately its been tOSU but its not like they havent had other schools represent in the CFP.
    The only thing ESPN has going for them is they literally own the CFP. Once they start sniffing the other leagues outside of the SEC, then dont be surprised we get rid of the NCAA and put in a commissioner or the B1G makes their own playoffs.

      Couldn't have said it better, excellent analysis 👏
      B1G will always make more money than SEC it is what it is a stated fact!!!
      But on the field SEC will continue to be extremely strong and popular because of as u mentioned weather, recruiting area, high school football, religious like fanbases and most of all its success on the field.
      "IT JUST MEANS MORE "
      Because of that they always be a close 2nd in revenue ,SEC, B1G has the two best products therefore I too can see a B1G, SEC Championship Game

    Both the SEC and B1G will be fine. What remains to be seen is if we end up with two super conferences, or if the ACC, Big 12, and PAC can’t form a third. On a related topic, I wonder how this will play out for the CFP contract in 2026?

    • @ChrisFeist76
      @ChrisFeist76 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As to the CFP once the current tv deal is up? They will go to multiple networks like the NFL It means more money and not one network monopolizing it. The B1G, Big 12, ACC, PAC Whatever will NEVER agree to a new deal that only sees ESPN controlling it again. I also think it will expand to at minimum 12 teams and a small chance of expanding it to 16 team playoff.

      Which is why I think the CFP might become pointless and more put on the conference championship game for the Big Ten. I mean sure was it cool to see UofM in the playoffs? Yeah. Did I care that they lost? Nope. They already best OSU and won the Big Ten. That is what matters to aot more of the fan base in Big Ten Football.

    Ohio state getting the death penalty, going 6-7 & losing to a pathetic Brady Hoke Michigan team.
    Michigan St. had Kirk Cousins (that’s embarrassment alone).
    Penn St. getting the death penalty
    Nebraska, Rutgers & Maryland joined bc they thought they were going to dominate the easy big ten.

    People are competitive in nature and no more so than those that love their sports and teams. In general, it’s the same argument being made as to who has the superior conference as it is who has the better networks. ESPN and FOX Sports are fighting very much like the SEC and the B1G for bragging rights. ESPN will push the SEC now that they’re excluded and FOX Sports will push for the B1G. Then people will say the other networks (ABC, NBC & CBS) are like the Big 12, ACC and PAC 12.
    As for me, I’m a fan of a Blue Blood program and I don’t care which of the conferences we’re in, what team we’re playing, the time of the game or what network it’s on. What matters to me is that I’m watching and rooting each Saturday they’re televised. I live over 1,000 miles from the campus and feel like I’m the winner by getting to consistently watch my boys play. The ultimate goal is the National Championship! The rest of the arguments of who’s theoretically better (conference or network) is a distant second.

  • @otisjohnjr.3023
    @otisjohnjr.3023 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This was all started by the SEC, Big12 and ACC in the 90s with big media contracts while others were on the outside looking in. The B1G is just trying to survive but in doing so have made their brand national while the SEC, ACC and Big 12 are more regional. So those talking about the dominance of the SEC this will most likely end that. It'll be good for college football as well to have competition from all over the nation. The NCAA, ESPN, along with the SEC became a monopoly the last 15 years or so. I think this shift is happening due in part to the continued fall of Disney and its affiliates. The contraction of ESPN is hurting the once dominant sports outlet. Maybe if ESPN had remained in more households the B1G would have continued to decline. It is hard for me to fathom the B1G Network alone is in as many households as ESPN, this before the LA market added to the B1G footprint, both are in about 75 million households. They say the SEC will have similar payouts coming in 2024 from ESPN but that seems highly unlikely at this point unless they generate more exposure thru other outlets. With NIL, transfer portal and CFP expansion the dark days in the B1G could be ending. Unless of course this B1G renewal is somehow ended by others.

    Honestly the SEC is in good hands with ESPN & ABC. Wait till they showcase the SEC championship game on both networks at the same time lol. Plus they'll have more primetime games on display too with both networks. With CBS the top SEC game of the week kick off at 3:30 ET. Now they'll flex that game to 8 ET to bring in more late ratings. They're taking two steps forward not one step backwards. With that being said the Big 10 deal will be monumental. It will close, if not surpass, the SEC in TV ratings but the reak battle they have to win is the talent on the field throughout the conference because the SEC still own that catagory. The SEC now own three of the top five high school talented states when it come to recruiting.

    I dont get what Big 10 fans think they have won? It's all cyclical. When the SEC goes to make a new deal in the future it will be bigger than the BIg 10s and then the Big 10 will be up for a new deal sometime after that and they will get a bigger deal and everyone's just going to keep getting a bigger deal based off the last deal that was made. Plus tv deals don't help you win football games and the SEC is still going to dominate in that aspect.
