    To put it short, Ys is about all the stories written by Adol, the main character (the guy on the cover with red hair). Each one of the game is one of the books he wrote and every one takes place at a certain time period of his life. It's a very neat detail because in each game you can see Adol either younger or older depending on which game you play.
    And just like FF, you can pretty much play all of them in any order and start with any game. But just like with other games, playing other Ys games helps you with world locations, certain characters and whatnot, but it's not really necessary.
    And yes, Ys8 is probably the best selling Ys game. Got a bunch of advertisement going on and I like to believe Dana (the chick in blue in the cover) helped sell the game lol

    This is the final boss theme of Ys VIII. When the piano starts there’s a really nice transition where the background changes from a dark setting to a serene dawn one. Ys VIII is definitely the most popular game in the series and many people (myself included) got into the series through playing it.

    Ys was kind of a pioneer in video game music. Ys 1 (back then known as Ys: Ancient Ys Vanished) was one of the first games to have its soundtrack released standalone on CD. It's the third game, or its remake Oath in Felghana, that has the best music though IMO, so imagine you'll find a good few of that game's tracks in your backlog too. Ys VIII was my first foray into the series at a friend's eager recommendation, and it very quickly ended up my favorite game of the console generation. Absolutely magical game.

    to answer two questions: Ys is a place from the first 2 games and Origin, basically the place that kickstarts the adventures of Adol Christin, the main character
    And yes, Ys VIII is considered the best one in the series, it's just phenomenal, it's how I got in the series, and I liked it so much I went back and played every other game, if that means anything

    Ys VIII is probably the one that got the most mainstream success. It hit at the right time, and was many people's first Ys game, it's also one of the best in the series. Hard to say how others got into it, as I have been an Ys fan for over 30 years, ever since the early 90's with the amazing Turbografx/PC Engine port which was the first time Ys 2 was available in any form. Termination is from that game. :D

    Ys as a series is one of the oldest ongoing action RPGs. It could even be considered the grandfather of all action RPGs, starting out around the same time as the first Final Fantasy and Zelda. It didn't catch on in a big way outside of Japan until Ys VIII (this game), so you are correct to call it the FF7 of the series. I like to think of Ys games as adventure games, like Zelda games, but with more RPG elements and storytelling to it.
    Also, Ys is actually a mythological place in French folklore, sort of like their version of Atlantis. The game world seems to be an alternate version of our own world. The main character is the red-headed guy who is an explorer and adventurer named Adol Christin. Each game is another chapter in his life of adventures, taking place different regions in this fictional world.

    I got into Ys with the Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles. Super Hard game with intersting tackle to the gameplay. After some time I went to my local Gamestore and they asked me if i want to preorder some games. and Ys 8 was on the list. And i said, why not. And when it came out...Oh boy I fell in love with it. In my opinion the best game of the few i played so far (1, 2, 8, 9) Music, Gameplay, Story all were for me top notch

    Yes that is the cover for the game. The series is still going and bassicly to explain what YS is. It is a collection of cannon adventure stories based on the adventures of the guy on the left Adol Christin. The games are not in order but there is a timeline to piece together if you know the lore and adols age between each adventure; for example the tenth game being released in Japan this year takes place after the first game in the series Ancient Ys Vanished. Ys is simply the name of a lost kingdom? from the first game and they just carried the name over in subsequent titles. Hopefully that helps. Oh yeah I did request songs for YS 6 though if you're wondering, am I the only one lol.

    I've only played two Ys games, but they were both amazing and had great soundtracks. Falcom always delivers quality even if it's on a budget.
    I think the reason you have the most requests from Ys 8 is because it was one that was fairly recent in the public eye.
    From my brief time as an Ys fan, I think Ys 1 and 2 actually get the most love.
    Lacrimosa of Dana (pronounced like Donna) basically means Dana's weeping. It refers to a big emotional choice that she was forced to make.

  • @karjar5742
    @karjar5742 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ys and Trails are Falcoms flagship franchises. They have both had a small but dedicated fanbase in Japan with some very niche representation in the west, which is starting to change now. Both Ys8 and Trails of Cold Steel, which came out around the same time iirc, have catapulted Falcom and their games into the next tier of popularity. Not even near mainstream or even well known, but also not as obscure as before. Its fair to say Ys8 is the most popular one.
    If you're interested, Ys 8 is very easy to jump into. You could call it a JRPG light, its got a lot of what you expect from the genre, but just not as daunting. There is a good story, but its not laid on as thick as usual. There are gear and levelling systems, but theyre not as overwhelming. It is quite long, though. The game is focused largely on combat and exploration and has a very quick, snappy and satisfying feeling. Combat in general mostly revolves around perfect parries/dodges and feels incredible once you learn an enemies pattern. Knowledge of previous games is rewarded, but its very intentionally enjoyable standalone too. Iirc, you have enjoyed BlazBlue before, so some of the more anime aspects of the game shouldnt be a big deterrent for you.

    VIII was the first one to come to major consoles in a while if I'm remembering right the two games before it came out on PSP/Vita so I think that is what makes VIII so memorable to people. Ys has been going since the late 80's my first game personally was Ys III on the SNES around 1994-5ish and I've been hooked ever since. The majority of the games are on Steam now and with the exception of VIII and IX they are pretty short games usually only like 10-15 hours to beat but they have some brutal difficulty unlocks so you're meant to replay the games multiple times.

    Ys is still ongoing, 9 was the most recent to come out in the US. It's a fairly niche title, like it's not even the most well-known falcom series and falcom isn't even very well-known itself. It's awesome, really face-paced, not a lot of standing around or heavy dialogue. Just extremely vibey and really has a fun rhythm to play.

    I think it's also the cover of the game and yes, it's beautiful. I actually used it for a custom placemat for on my living room table.
    Ys is pretty much an action-RPG series centered around the stories that a guy named Adol Christin has written (he becomes known as Adol the Red). All of the games other than 1 & 2 are completely standalone and 1 & 2 usually come in a bundle. Well, I suppose Origin is also connected to 1 & 2, but not in a way that requires playing them (but Ys Origin is a fantastic game and one of the best in the series). There are some references to other games here & there, but no outright spoilers. The series is known for banger soundtracks and fast-paced action gameplay. The stories are mostly kinda classical. Not too great, but they do its job and the world is kinda easy to get sucked into.
    In terms of story, I'd say Ys VIII is the best in the series by far. It starts out a bit dull, but at some point it just grabbed me and never let go. The sense of adventure is greater than any other Ys game and Dana is a really amazing second protagonist. Some folks criticize it for getting too existential near the end, but personally I loved it.
    Most Ys games are also pretty short. Mostly 7-15 hours or so (which is fairly short for RPG standards). Only the last 3 games have been lengthier... about 30-40 hours on the normal difficulty (which are Memories of Celceta, Ys VIII and Ys IX).

  • @SashaTheQwaser
    @SashaTheQwaser ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Oh god, the Ys series.
    I forget if you've done anything in the Trails series, but the studio behind both Ys and Trails, Nihon Falcom, is considered to be one of the pioneer companies in regards to JRPGs and ARPGs, and were one of the first studios to have their own in-house soundteam.
    As someone else mentioned, Ys music was among the first video game soundtracks to be released as albums, and the sound team has gone on to do amazing work, including concerts.
    Ys is still an ongoing series, with Ys X Nordics due out sometime in the relatively near future.

    • @SashaTheQwaser
      @SashaTheQwaser ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As for Ys 8 being the most well-known, among fans, it's definitely the most notorious.
      The studio that localized it, Nippon Ichi Software America, kind of half-assed the original localization. To the point that some parts of the game were still in Japanese, and other parts were localized literally, instead of properly translated.
      For example, one late-game area, called the "Archaeozoic Chasm", was originally localized as the "Archaeozoic Big Hole".
      It resulted in a public apology by NISA, plus a recall of the voice actors to re-dub the re-translated lines.
      Ys 5 has never been localized outside of a fan translation; Ys 4 originally had 2 separate games, developed by two separate studios. The plots of both games were merged together and remade under the title "Ys: Memories of Celceta"

    As far as "what is Ys?" goes, it was an ancient and prosperous country ruled over by twin Goddesses. In the off chance you play these games I'll avoid spoilers. But basically, a magical, mystical land exists in the sky, people wanted the power of said land and built a tower of Babel in an attempt to reach it. Ys itself is only really the focus of 3 games - 1, 2 and Origin. The series has since outgrown its namesake and the other games center around different countries and the legends of those countries.

    The main character of mainline ys games is Adol, the red haired guy in the picture. The games are pretty much just a retelling of his adventures throughout his life. Each game is centered around one of his adventures and has a self contained story with some nods to his previous adventures but nothing too major so you can pretty much start with any ys game no problem.
    Ys 8 is about him being shipwrecked on an uninhabited island where he and the survivors have to solve the islands mystery and try to get off it. The story gets more complicated than that but I'm not gonna spoil it but ys 8 is one of my favorite games, not just in the ys series but of all time. Definitely recommend it.

    Ys is starting to get more popular. Ys is more of a hack n slash games. Ys 10 is coming out in japan soon. It suppose to take place between Ys 2 and Celesta (which is Ys4). Ys has all their games on pc and usually discounted decently. You can get Ys 8 for around $15 on sale. They have a few on consoles but Ys is working on remakes on some now that they have seen much better sales. There is 1 being remade thats out Ys 3.

    What is Ys?
    Ys is an ancient land that was once overrun by demons.
    It basically vanished over night, which is the basis for the mystery the players have to solve in the first two games, which are really the only ones that should definitely be played in order.
    The series as a whole continues to throw events, relics and things your way, many of which are at least loosely connected to certain elements of this mystery.
    As for Lacrimosa of Dana......
    Well, "Dana" is a character in the game and "lacrimosa" is the latin word for tear.
    I don't really want to say any more than that since it is among the best games of the series and definitely worth playing.
    However I would recommend to play other entries first, simply because this is not Adols', the main protagonists'. first adventure and the game starts with him as a well-known and established character in a very atypical situation for a JRPG.
    Also it involves a few characters and refers to events that have been introduced in other entries of the series.
    But either way, "Lacrimosa of Dana" is indeed one of the best entries in the series, possibly even the best one, though in the end that is a matter of taste.
    All of them tell fantastic stories, have surprisingly intense threats, and look great for their time.

    Some people criticize Singa for his unusual instrument choices in his compositions... I disagree wholly... it's one of the things that makes his compositions stand out, even amidst the pure genius of Ys music, let alone the rest of VGM as a whole. Ys VIII does feature a lot of hard rock and metal, as that seems to be jdk's preferred style in general, but there's plenty of variation on this OST. Vanishing Trail is probably the most novel in this regard. It's strange though that the Ys soundtracks are, on occasion, better than the games they accompany, as not all Ys games have been winners, but the OST is never a failure.
