Amolo Kongo was not only one of the greatest nyatiti performers who ever lived, he also studied under the same teacher I do, Oduor Nyagweno. If you listen closely to his playing, you can hear a number of standard Nyagweno riffs hidden in there.
Kongo died young, likely during the bad old days of HIV. When I asked about it, Nywageno mentioned that Kongo liked sex a great deal. More important, however, was how complimentary Nyagweno was toward Kongo. In Kenya, it is somewhat rare for one musicians to compliment another so enthusiastically. While horribly sad to die so young, Kongo’s music lives on.
