I love this interpretation of Saint as a character, it's just way more interesting than the trigger-happy "haha i'm evil i kill everything lmao" I see in memes and stuff. He isn't evil, he's calm and kind, like you'd expect for someone called a saint. His task to ascend all things is something he takes no pleasure in, and it leaves him deeply traumatized and lonely.

the irony is that canonically, he does seem to take pleasure in it. (the reason he cannot ascend is karma level 10: the will to ascend yourself/others) Ascension is something positive by the way, not saying the memes depicting him as evil are right. I think the answer for monks characters is that he is a calm, spiritual and saintly slugcat that uses its abilities to ascend others only if they are willing (though in gameplay, those lizards sure arent capable of consenting)
I interpreted his character as a “I’m doing this for your own good” type person. Thinking that what he’s doing is for the greater good, and that he’s doing everyone a favor, even though many creatures likely don’t want to ascend (as shown by the undergrowth echo), reflecting the mentality of many of the ancients. He is basically the incarnation of the flaws of ancient ideology, that ascension is the only thing worth striving for, when there is meaning to be found in nearly everything you can think of. They idolized this ascension to be paradise so much that, instead of making this paradise into reality, they created a problem that couldn’t be realistically solved, passing that problem and mentality onto their creations, the iterators, even after they are long departed. The problems with the ancients, and by extension saint, is their ego, thinking they know better, and forcing their mentality onto everything else, even though it’s their decision to make. I like to think that in another universe, instead of saint dedicating their life to ascension, learned from the ancients, and decided to make living better, embracing their saintly nature, instead of endlessly working towards a nearly impossible goal.
There’s a pearl that describes an ancient’s achievements in life, among them is listed “Father and Mother”, so this is 100% True. Either the ancients were unisex or they reincarnated as different genders each time their cycle restarted.
3:37 Nobody else seems to have acknowledged the art in the background that shows Saint and Artificer are a couple in this universe, so I will. I thought it was nonsensical at first, "How did the pacifist and the scav murderer get along?" but then I thought about it more and realized that it actually makes a ton of sense. The Echo atop the tower advices Artificer to seek a different outlet for her pain besides vengeance, and there is a secret ending where Artificer can do exactly that. It doesn't go very well in-game, but if Saint were there he would probably try to help her. This version of Artificer could be a fully redeemed one, who no longer kills scavengers and is no longer haunted by the tragic deaths of her children. She has let her old family pass on, and in the process started a new one with Saint.
If you think about it, EVERYONE but Monk in the new universe DISLIKES Saint, with ARTI SPECIFICALLY hating Saint, Monk is excluded cuz he doesnt seem to remember them. This other universe MIGHT be why everything came out the way it did in the new one.

Well, due to Rubicon we could make up an answer, spoilers: - Would probably find the situation interesting, dialogue indicates that the iterators are pretty accepting of ascension, considering that is kind of their purpose, to find how to do exactly that, so they probably wouldn't be worried about the ones that get ascended, maybe even happy for them, though I think they would probably ask Saint for information on how that's happening. - They would be generally horrified at Saint's existance, not because of what Saint does but because of Saint himself, tbh I think they would be kind of sad and sympathetic about Saint's situation due to lines like "Yet... I cannot see the beginning, or end of your own. An aberrant cycle twisting into mine, before spiraling onward into the abyss. What a horrifying destiny you've found." "Where does your cycle go, little creature? Its edges twist over themselves, like circles within circles, your cycle consumes itself. What have you become?"
So I mathed a bit, a guardian in RW has 10,000,000hp and it takes Saint 3 hits to kill it with ascension, this means each hit deals at least 3.3 million damage per hit, if we go by this 3.3 million per hit that monk saint had to 4 shot to kill had at the very least 13,333,333hp, but that may be much more considering the numbers I used were rough estimates

After that we see that really good and goosebumps giving song where saint just poofs everyone off in we end we see usual ascension route as saint and back to the start with a slight difference of monk partially recalling previous loop. And some monk saint interaction. WELL time bring my inner mat pat out. SO first topic AU (alternate universe) so its obvious it happened in Au but what’s different? Well let’s see 1. There bipedal technically slugcats are also bipedal but not as much as shown here. 2. It seems all 8 slug cats actually live at nearly the same time being able to communicate with most of them. Unlike original where we know they all live in completely different times. 3. It seems iterators are gone or are out of cycle unlike slug cats. 4. It seems unlike complete circle in which saint was stuck in a game in here he’s stuck in a different period which keeps repeating after a while. Than we go thru saint ascension path as usual the classic journey bonk void worm and get transformed to echo at which point cycle repeats. Well does that mean he always goes thru that? Huh WELL I think no this is supposed to be memory so I think after he becomes echo he’s beginning to get stuck at a different period somewhere near monks meeting with saint, but I think its slightly early than that like its au but it’s still should be accounted for so I think all slug cats are close by time periods but still come at certain point like Spearmaster ( which I didn’t see in there surprisingly enough) then comes the artificer next and so on. So now we know about ascension talked about memory now TWO final topics ascension and Saint himself. Ascension so whats different from the game well let’s see. 1. And main stuff about it everyone can get it well unless monk can somehow assent in game which is impossible in here everyone can assent and have all of that op powers. 2. Ascended slugcats get ability to remember all of the past cycles (considering this quite 6:20 literally shows the repeated actions Saint takes every cycle) 3. Ascended slugcats also seem to have ascension resistance (Just need melee res and you can play scugnight (funny moment (anyway))) which is by the way takes three poofs which means every ascended scug has nearly the same resistance to assent as a literal gods (which are this 5:36) so very cool. That seems most of the powers of ascended slug cats (well other then ability to ascend and flight). BUT how could the monk reach max karma you need to visit echo well this is where I talk about the boy the star the legend THE SAINT. Saint is an interesting character both in game and in theory. He has a GOD like powers yet he’s forced to repeat cycle other and other again and again we didn’t even know was this his first giga cycle second, fifth, tenth, hundredth? So in here he is even more interesting while in a base game he just assents other creatures but in here he assents scugs kind of his kind and conscious of surroundings not just animals. And I will say Saint always seemed like a very double sided character ON ONE SIDE he does a great deed he helps everyone ascend freely so hes good right? Well ON THE OTHER SIDE if someone said I will kill you irl but get you to heaven I’ll reject it and run away because I kinda want to live but Saint doesn’t care about it he just ascends everyone with the word for the greater good. Yes you know I always thought of a Saint as a demon with angels sword, he has great weapon which can help others and does a great deeds but he can still force someone to do anything he wants. He has a weapon which can send you to heaven but you need to get stabbed by it, sure on one side free pass to heaven is great but what if I LIKE my live well he kinda doesn’t care. SO I painted him in this way is he BAD GOOD MID? Well no he has one of the worst fates I think. THE FATE WORSE THAN DEATH. I’m always afraid of death obviously but this scenario is even worse Saint is trapped in a constant cycle which he can’t escape. And I’m scarred of that its horrible fate and his desire to have someone near him (Monk), to hopefully ease the pain of all that. Well also don’t forget why did he then ascend Monk? I mean he needs to go to echo to increase karma, well don’t forget Saint became echo which is why I think Monk got to max karma and which eventually ascended Monk and he had to ascend him. AND this situation is unique 7:43 this cycle happened after Saint accidently made Monk have max karma and then had to ascent him. WILL THIS finally break cycle? Sadly I doubt it but let’s hope. ALSO I need to check that goggle drive maybe it has some answers. ALSO congrats you read all of that!
Oh wow. Saint's gameplay still very mysterious to me and seeing this.... It's really cool that some people interested in rain world not just because of cool challenges, but also because of lore! That really warms my heart :p Also, I never thought that Saint's story can be so dark. In game it's "nice I kill everything I see, BONK" Thanks for community for doing such cool and interesting things
Depending on how many echoes he visits, that's all the rain world sins represented. By visiting the proof of those unfortunate sinners, he can learn to ascend even those parts of the soul in others, making the future ascensions truly complete and safe, painless.
That was a really good comic! Kinda wierd that Saint managed to ascend Artificer tho, I expected his powers not to work on her or at least not being able to ascend her fully, knock her out or something idk. Especially since her Karma is so low. It'd be pretty cool to see her hating on Saint for what he did to Hunter her children and others, maybe she'd even try to kill Saint a few times... But ultimately they'd be left alone in this Rain World as Saint continues. Would be a pretty tragic and intresting ending to their rivarly. Also the scugs seem to be starting to save at least some of their memories... Maybe Arti could figure something out and call out Saint with his bullshit about pacifism and all that while she was considered to be the violent one. Eh idk I'm probably talking nonsense. It might be why the Artificer hates them so much. The more unreasonable the ascension, the less clean the mind of the one that ascended. Somewhere buried deep down, Artificer is traumatized for a reason she does not know.
This is very different from me and Strawberry’s interpretation of Saint. We see them as barely even using their abilities and their power being rather unstable, leading to them feeling shame for various accidental ascensions.

holy jesus this is dark yet I love it, the characters were abit hard to tell who they were tho (except monk and saint ofc) because they weren't colored in most of the time.
In the comic, all of the other slug cats don't remember anything after being ascended, so it's probably just a monk thing. My head cannon is that they had some resistance to being ascended after reaching max karma, which is also why it took three hits for them to ascend.

Really like the “blink and you’ll miss it” detail of Saint and Artificer being an item right as he ascends her. It’s tragic. Edit: Just read through the google doc, and it’s even more heartbreaking. Arty says that the saint saved her, Im going to guess by helping her find peace after the death of her children, wanting nothing more but to be with Saint on his mission…but I know what that mission is.
MAN the music hit me. As the description says, it's called the mind electric. I actually listen to rain world animations of it a lot, but I think it fits here REALLY well. Same for monk saying "that must be really painful" when saint talks about ascension. It's sad cause it means that even though they were true cycle killed (what i call ascension. I call it that because its similar to a true reset in undertale. Everything is both the exact same as when you started it), they still remember bits and peices, implying that ascension is very painful. And that is just REALLY sad

it's funny because put against any of the other scugs he should really probably die, like, all they have to do it spear hit once, and his mobility is no help at all with them because they are the same except for his flight and tongue, which isn't a help with at least one of them. Plus knocking him out of the air with a rock. Also... don't think it would work on Arti.. Arti also being one of the main ones that would absolutly fuck saint up. AND THEN THERE'S GOURMAND who just yeets himself from a high place crushing him with his chonk or his like 3x damage spear throw.
Game mechanics wise, a player vs player fight would not be Saint favored. Lore wise, Saint just has to look at an unsuspecting slugcat for a couple milliseconds and they die.
@@chaotixthefox lore wise we see nothing that indicates it would only take a few miliseconds, saint goes still when he uses his ability and it takes at least a few seconds, which ... gives all of them more than enough time to kill him

Since canon was respected when writing what the slugcats are capable of, abilities that are not portrayed in canon, only gameplay and the sim, can be assumed to approximately function as shown in the sim.
I can imagine Saint stumbling upon the once beautiful colony tree only to see a frozen wilted husk with the bones of various long extinct creatures scattered around partially buried by the snowstorm. And Saint just stands there in silence…Not moving for a good few minutes…Then…A tear falls…Followed by another…And another and another…And soon the knowledge of being eternally alone brings them to there knees… …And thus Saint weeps… And weeps… And weeps…

So um to clear a few things.
1. I didn’t really know where to say all of this so I will say it here.

Thx for listening now a bit of a recap just to remember all of the stuff.
We see the boy saint meeting monk giving him a helping help while saying yet again which YE he done it before. We see monk reaching highest karma somehow will talk about it. So he pulls comically op finger gun and puffs monk. After that we see that really good and goosebumps giving song where saint just poofs everyone off in we end we see usual ascension route as saint and back to the start with a slight difference of monk partially recalling previous loop. And some monk saint interaction.
WELL time bring my inner mat pat out. SO first topic AU (alternate universe) so its obvious it happened in Au but what’s different? Well let’s see
1. There bipedal technically slugcats are also bipedal but not as much as shown here.
2. It seems all 8 slug cats actually live at nearly the same time being able to communicate with most of them. Unlike original where we know they all live in completely different times.
3. It seems iterators are gone or are out of cycle unlike slug cats.
4. It seems unlike complete circle in which saint was stuck in a game in here he’s stuck in a different period which keeps repeating after a while. At what point exactly idk I have a theory but I’ll tell it later.
That seems to be it, well mostly it. So lets talk about that weird complathion at 3:10 well I think it obvious its memories but which exactly or what exactly do they mean. My idea is that Saint is reminded of he’s past and other loops. My THEORY starts building here saint was an innocent child but at some point he got to highest karma and ascended after knowing that he’s stuck in a loop (which is probably the power that ascension gives I’ll talk about it later) he tries to assent every slugcat which I think hurt him especially monk. Than we go thru saint ascension path as usual the classic journey bonk void worm and get transformed to echo at which point cycle repeats. Well does that mean he always goes thru that? Huh WELL I think no this is supposed to be memory so I think after he becomes echo he’s beginning to get stuck at a different period somewhere near monks meeting with saint, but I think its slightly early than that like its au but it’s still should be accounted for so I think all slug cats are close by time periods but still come at certain point like Spearmaster ( which I didn’t see in there surprisingly enough) then comes the artificer next and so on. So now we know about ascension talked about memory now TWO final topics ascension and Saint himself.
Ascension so whats different from the game well let’s see.
1. And main stuff about it everyone can get it well unless monk can somehow assent in game which is impossible in here everyone can assent and have all of that op powers.
2. Ascended slugcats get ability to remember all of the past cycles (considering this quite 6:20 literally shows the repeated actions Saint takes every cycle)
3. Ascended slugcats also seem to have ascension resistance (Just need melee res and you can play scugnight (funny moment (anyway))) which is by the way takes three poofs which means every ascended scug has nearly the same resistance to assent as a literal gods (which are this 5:36) so very cool.
That seems most of the powers of ascended slug cats (well other then ability to ascend and flight). BUT how could the monk reach max karma you need to visit echo well this is where I talk about the boy the star the legend THE SAINT.
Saint is an interesting character both in game and in theory. He has a GOD like powers yet he’s forced to repeat cycle other and other again and again we didn’t even know was this his first giga cycle second, fifth, tenth, hundredth? So in here he is even more interesting while in a base game he just assents other creatures but in here he assents scugs kind of his kind and conscious of surroundings not just animals. And I will say Saint always seemed like a very double sided character ON ONE SIDE he does a great deed he helps everyone ascend freely so hes good right? Well ON THE OTHER SIDE if someone said I will kill you irl but get you to heaven I’ll reject it and run away because I kinda want to live but Saint doesn’t care about it he just ascends everyone with the word for the greater good. Yes you know I always thought of a Saint as a demon with angels sword, he has great weapon which can help others and does a great deeds but he can still force someone to do anything he wants. He has a weapon which can send you to heaven but you need to get stabbed by it, sure on one side free pass to heaven is great but what if I LIKE my live well he kinda doesn’t care. SO I painted him in this way is he BAD GOOD MID? Well no he has one of the worst fates I think. THE FATE WORSE THAN DEATH. I’m always afraid of death obviously but this scenario is even worse Saint is trapped in a constant cycle which he can’t escape. And I’m scarred of that its horrible fate and his desire to have someone near him (Monk), to hopefully ease the pain of all that. Well also don’t forget why did he then ascend Monk? I mean he needs to go to echo to increase karma, well don’t forget Saint became echo which is why I think Monk got to max karma and which eventually ascended Monk and he had to ascend him. AND this situation is unique 7:43 this cycle happened after Saint accidently made Monk have max karma and then had to ascent him. WILL THIS finally break cycle? Sadly I doubt it but let’s hope.
ALSO I need to check that goggle drive maybe it has some answers. ALSO congrats you read all of that!
OK. Now I need more content like this. It is not a want or a desire. It is a nessessity for survival.
Oh wow. Saint's gameplay still very mysterious to me and seeing this.... It's really cool that some people interested in rain world not just because of cool challenges, but also because of lore! That really warms my heart :p
Also, I never thought that Saint's story can be so dark. In game it's "nice I kill everything I see, BONK"

Depending on how many echoes he visits, that's all the rain world sins represented. By visiting the proof of those unfortunate sinners, he can learn to ascend even those parts of the soul in others, making the future ascensions truly complete and safe, painless.

That was a really good comic! Kinda wierd that Saint managed to ascend Artificer tho, I expected his powers not to work on her or at least not being able to ascend her fully, knock her out or something idk. Especially since her Karma is so low. It'd be pretty cool to see her hating on Saint for what he did to Hunter her children and others, maybe she'd even try to kill Saint a few times... But ultimately they'd be left alone in this Rain World as Saint continues. Would be a pretty tragic and intresting ending to their rivarly. Also the scugs seem to be starting to save at least some of their memories... Maybe Arti could figure something out and call out Saint with his bullshit about pacifism and all that while she was considered to be the violent one. Eh idk I'm probably talking nonsense. Incredbile comic tho! Voice acting was great too but someone tell Monk's voice actor to get a new mic XD

Well his whole purpose is to ascend stuff that are unascendable, iterators and echoes so artificer maybe after tankinng some brainblasts would get ascended eventually

It might be why the Artificer hates them so much. The more unreasonable the ascension, the less clean the mind of the one that ascended. Somewhere buried deep down, Artificer is traumatized for a reason she does not know.

This is very different from me and Strawberry’s interpretation of Saint. We see them as barely even using their abilities and their power being rather unstable, leading to them feeling shame for various accidental ascensions.

Does this series hint that Saint’s power doesn’t fully work? Cause Monk shows very tiny hints of remembering after getting ascended
In the comic, all of the other slug cats don't remember anything after being ascended, so it's probably just a monk thing. My head cannon is that they had some resistance to being ascended after reaching max karma, which is also why it took three hits for them to ascend.

Monk is the only other scug capable of obtaining and using Saint's powers, that probably has something to do with it

Edit: Just read through the google doc, and it’s even more heartbreaking. Arty says that the saint saved her, Im going to guess by helping her find peace after the death of her children, wanting nothing more but to be with Saint on his mission…but I know what that mission is.

MAN the music hit me. As the description says, it's called the mind electric. I actually listen to rain world animations of it a lot, but I think it fits here REALLY well. Same for monk saying "that must be really painful" when saint talks about ascension. It's sad cause it means that even though they were true cycle killed (what i call ascension. I call it that because its similar to a true reset in undertale. Everything is both the exact same as when you started it), they still remember bits and peices, implying that ascension is very painful. And that is just REALLY sad

it's funny because put against any of the other scugs he should really probably die, like, all they have to do it spear hit once, and his mobility is no help at all with them because they are the same except for his flight and tongue, which isn't a help with at least one of them. Plus knocking him out of the air with a rock. Also... don't think it would work on Arti.. Arti also being one of the main ones that would absolutly fuck saint up.
AND THEN THERE'S GOURMAND who just yeets himself from a high place crushing him with his chonk or his like 3x damage spear throw.
Game mechanics wise, a player vs player fight would not be Saint favored. Lore wise, Saint just has to look at an unsuspecting slugcat for a couple milliseconds and they die.
@@chaotixthefox lore wise we see nothing that indicates it would only take a few miliseconds, saint goes still when he uses his ability and it takes at least a few seconds, which ... gives all of them more than enough time to kill him

Since canon was respected when writing what the slugcats are capable of, abilities that are not portrayed in canon, only gameplay and the sim, can be assumed to approximately function as shown in the sim.
