"We are sinking, we are sinking !"
"Um, what are you thinking about ?"
That cracked me up so much I nearly ruined my pants man !
It's a classic.
Strange: The German Coast Guard guy knows to use thinking with "about" but does not know the different pronunciation of "th" and "s"? Which is one of the first things one learns about speaking English. If he had made the mistake because of a bad accent then if would have made sense. So the guy should have easily understood what the distress call was about.
BTW I find this joke better: A man in danger of drowning cries: "Help, help!" German bystander mentions to his buddy: "He should have learned to swim instead of a foreign language."
To add: "We are sinking!" in German: "Wir sinken"
So: pretty similar.
Ist ein Klassiker - und typisch Deutsch
The coastguard's English is supposed to be exaggerated but no kidding, at my workplace, some people actually talk like this.
I really respect them for bravely trying though.
No. If they would try, they should be able to pronounce it right.
@@AlexandraVioletta damn, you must be one annoying human being ^^
@@AlexandraVioletta OK, Boomer
@@AlexandraVioletta yeah because if american, british, french and spanish people speak german, they always pronounce it right... yawn...
Like the girl at her first day at the baywatch. " look there is anybody waving. How nice! i wave too.
It's him saying "scheisse(shit)" to his father not his father saying it.
scheiße
1:40 David Hasselhoff's poster came unexpectedly and hit hard.
This was the main sign that he's actually german :D
The pun in the first video is that Günther is adopted by British parents and clearly lives in a British environment (f.e. the dad reads an English language newspaper). When Günther makes his announcement, it is clear that everyone expects him to come out to his parents as gay, but the fact that he, a black person adopted by white Brits identifies as German is hilarious, cause 1) there is still some resentment against Germans among the parent‘s generation (f.e., the dad slaps him after announcing his “Germanness“, supposing this declaration is actually WORSE than coming out as gay to the father), 2) there are only about 1% of blacks among the German population altogether (many of which do complain about being singled out if or met with prejudices, seen as refugees or immigrants rather than Germans, etc.), and 3) assuming, he only has second-hand knowledge about Germany, identifying with being a German and then subscribing to all the clichés about being German (Lederhosen, blond straight hair, doing the classical Bavarian dancing etc.) is just really funny… I have seen the coast guard ad before and think it is very funny, too. Maybe because I am an English teacher in Germany…
Thanks for explaining the first ad. I (German) did not get the joke
Okay that was a fine explanation and all but the real question as a german that I have is, why is he holding our flag upside down in the last scene?
@@Miessa1989 Because he is not a German, doesn‘t know much about Germany (hence he embraces only stereotypes and clichés), and thus misinterprets everything about Germany… He feels German but does not even know the flag…
Dude, that's because from the ~ 1% of the black population only 0,4% are actually legal in Germany...
And OBVIOUSLY the most of the 0,4% weren't born in Germany. 🙄
if a joke needs that many points to be explained, it's not a good joke imo
"Deutschland liebt Günther" is a series of short clips (not truly commercials, more of a skit character) on MTV that was produced almost 20 years ago. Filmed in New Zealand, btw. The Berlitz language school German Costguard one is hilarious, and a true commercial/ad.
The funniest German commercial is the Mercedes‘ clip „Adolph!!!!“
(relax, I know it’s not a real ad)
14 years ago I started at my company and had to do a lot of training. One of my trainers was Scottish. She showed us the German coast guard clip. We had so much fun. She had such a good sense of humor, but she also had such a strong Scottish accent. For some of us she was almost not to understand.
"Wot are you zinking about?" - Oh man, I'm dying right now! 😂😂😂The pun is so on point! I know people talking exactly like zis.
It is this iconic German accent used by Gert Froebe in "Goldfinger": "Ve hav vays to make you talk."
As a native German speaker this video still made me laugh so much! 😂
The Coastguard one is a classic, it burned itself into my brain, i'll never forget it.
So your baby kicked you out and now you occupied your toddler’s room?😂
What? No, that's Ryans own play room.
He's working himself upward
That's the fate of man! The workshop in the cellar or the toddlers playroom in the attic as a man cave😂
This is not the original room. It's the room under the roof 😅
Just _pony_ it up and it'll be totally mature!
The coastguard‘s English is not the yellow from the egg. 🤔🤪
Which is called 'yolk'.
@@clausanders2886 What you not say! ;D
😂😂😂😂 yeah, you are on the wood way!
@@sabinereimer7809 People still find these jokes funny after 100 years?
new years, new people
You even didn’t get the funniest one: in German, it sounds exactly the same: “wir sinken!”
The coast guard's English is actually similar to the skills of some of the students in my year when I got my Abitur, so this ad is really necessary😅😂
Günther reminds me of the guy in the Deichkind song "in der Natur" (maybe a reference to the mtv ads) - a video worth looking at and talking about, in fact all Deichkind Videos are worth talking about 😂
Deichkind might be to anti-consumeristic for americans, but Ryan could give it a try he seems open-minded.
For me the Günther one feels extremely cringy 🙉🙈
It is, especially because they use every known cliche.
But take a closer look: Is this not a coming out story? Is this not mocking how hard a coming out is?
And this is also a very good example of how to ask: what is nationality? Is it not just a feeling? A community where you feel like you belong?
i agreee, it's extremely cringe
I suspect that's exactly how it's intended.
@@alis49281 The problem is, if the roles were reversed (if a white guy was 'coming out' as African and started walking around in a straw skirt), it would be considered extremely problematic...
It took me a while to understand that Ryan's initial "Kchawlla" is supposed to be a German "Hallo".
the berlitz commercial was really one of the best i ever saw in the time where watching tv was still a thing :)
Agree. My top 3 commercials of all time:
1. What are you sinking about?
2. My car is on the fritz!
3. The Exorcist (Dirt Devil).
One of my class mates began with "I (s)think..." And our english teacher asked: "how deep?" Then it was hilarious.
XD
The first clip with Günther is a short film from 2005 made by a Dutch agency from Amsterdam for MTV Benelux.
He said what are you singing about, not what are you thinking about 😂
The commercials from the Flensburger Brauerei are simply the best!
Das flenst!
Plopp! 🍻
There are several other funny commercials. ("Bleiben Sie ruhig, ich hol Hilfe") ("Geht doch! Geht doch!")
Hey Ryan. I'm German and this is a good one😅😅😅
"SOS, ship sinks!" Coast guard: "Sorry, we don't have any sinks in store ...."
totally expected the Ninja Turtles Pickles Commercial here lmao
The coastguard Ad :) He had it in school in the early 2000's
My favorite commercial is the one from Volkswagen with the laughing horses😂
About the coast guard you have understood it quite clearly. In short the superior at the coast guard explained that all the equipment was very important... all parts are very very life-saving survival-radar important. 😉
That's funny because in Germany, predominantly American ads are considered funny. I didn't know there was funny German advertising.
Porsche commercials are really smart and funny
Best german ad ever. Überlebensradar!!!! It's a meme.
There is another very infamous one for learning English from the Dutchies...but it is kinda banned 😼
I think the first one wasn't that funny tbh. At least not in the way we expected.
I liked how you remained nice struggling through it. Partly American politeness I guess. ^^
He's not German, he's Bayer and yes, outside of Bayern we make a difference.
Hi I am from Germany and love you videos
Just in case nobody pointed it out yet: The original music in the first clip has been replaced has been with Heino's version of Germany's national anthem. The original clip has Die schwarze Barbara (also by Heino), which is much more fitting from a music point of view as well as the guy being black (schwarz in German).
Hilarious, both of them. Günther is Ehren-German.😁👏
It's sad everyone in the USA thinks Bavaria represents Germany.
it's not that all americans think that germans all wear lederhosen but those with lederhosen are the best way to portray a german, no one would recognise an east frisian with traditional clothes as german, learn to laugh at yourself normally as a bavarian i should be outraged but i like such commercials
@@onnasenshi7739 sorry we don't like to be called right wing extremists Bavaria is the birtpkace of the NSDAP and the homeplace of the CSU both right wing nazis
@@wandilismus8726 Lighten up dude - this is a comedy reaction channel.

So, it finally happened. You have been demoted to the empty infant's room. Sorry, man! 😂 😂 😂 That Berlitz commercial was hysterical. All together, fun, though the Gunther "coming out" one was cringe worthy. Have a wonderful day. Stay warm. Peace
Student: "I sink that..."
My teacher: "Would be sad if you were sinking."
Every time to tell them to properly do the th.
the last Joke was the Overkill 😂
Check out the "My car is on the fritz" commercial - it's from the same company and is also very funny.
Ryans reaction to the "Mom, dad" commercial is EXACTLY like mine - and i'm both from Germany AND old enough to have seen that on TV!
The German digging a hole on the beach is a Dutch joke, dating back to ww2 when the Germans were digging fox holes on the Dutch beaches against an invasion😂
That Günther Film is wired, i never seen such a Video on MTV Germany 😂😂 T´he Coastguard comercial is awesome funny, but the sadly truth is: some high ranked german politician speaking english exact like that guy !!!
Did anyone else notice, that the German flag at the end of the MTV clip is upside down?
I searched for this comment. It annoyes me deeply😂
maybe it's intentional
@@Maria-js9ou That's definitely possible, but what would be the intention?
Funny german commercials. Shortest video ever. Are we not funny at all?
Great video as always
What are you sinking about? 😂😂😂
Hahaha! In my class it was the same problem. So many people say sink and not think.
"We are sinking."
"What are you sinking about?"
Oh boy. 😂
5:16 Yes, it is. Scheiße is shit in englisch.
Funny how the first one had a NP on the license plate, thats the region where im from lol.
I don't get the Günther one at all. Was it aired in Germany or specifically non-German countries? And what was MTV trying to advertise here? Very confusing. 😂
1:47 David Hasselhoff brokethrough in Germany
Hello Ryan...Do you know, for What Lederhosen was invited?? in Germany Bavaria(and also Austria) in the 19.then Century(1800-1899) was the hole Bavaria Farmers! And the Lederhosen was Working Trousers for fieldwork and Work in cowsheds for clearout and feeding...They wear IT also in freetime in folkfestival and Dancing...But in the 21 Century, also in Bavaria, bavarians wear IT only in Traditionell costume Clubs and folkfestival...In Oktoberfest wear IT old Bavarians, older than 60,75 , but the Most Younger People who wear IT, are Tourist!!!;)
2:44 German flag upside down?😂
I noticed that as well. I assume it is intentional.
Nah, he said "Scheiße". Never saw that before. Guess he is like adopted and they expected him to say he was gay or something, but instead he said "German". Also notice that David Hasselhoff poster on his door. hahaha
what the EF this language ad killed me 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That MTV-Spot got spoiled! The original had the Song "Die schwarze Barbara" by Heino from 1975 instead of the German anthem
THAT is funny, greetings from Munich
im from germany, these arnt german commercials! never saw them and i dont know how these could be for germany viewers at all!
Want to see commercial German
Warning is brutal, also bit funny
Maybe you should watch the 'behind the scene' videos of a German band called Electric Callboy. They have English subtitles and are really funny. The last one is Electric Callboy - Hello 2024.
The Best Sign if you are a german: a David Hasselhoff Poster on the door.
😂
3:17 As somepony living in Germany I'm just as baffled.
4:31 "I think I spider!" XD
Some recommendations for more of this:
- "Maggi Buchstabensuppe (lustige Werbung)" (Tscheiko11) - do yourself a favor and look up the words :)
- "lustige Mercedes-Werbung mit Mika Häkkinen, Michael Schumacher und Franz Beckenbauer" (onlineAuto)
- "Lustige EDEKA Werbung" (Chavy belair)
- "Edeka Werbung mit Scooter" (Markus79)
- "Werbung - Edeka - Wursttheke (2007)" (GerComSpots)
And one from our Dutch neighbours:
- "Witzige Werbung - Die Sprachschule - Lustige Werbespots" (leechecker)
And finally a few compilations that have some nice ones as well:
- "Lustige deutsche Werbung -- funny german comercial" (Gehtdi Nixo) - last one of those is Dutch as well
- "Witzige Werbespots für den DaF-Unterricht!" (Evi Van Damme) - DaF = Deutsch als Fremdsprache, German as foreign language
We are sinking. Question = what are you singing about? Need more language classes :))
His car sign said np something I don't even wanna know
I don’t even get what mtv was trying to do with the first one 🫥
The guy said scheiße, because he thinks he‘s german. Bursting out in german I guess. The second commercial advertises a language school in germany
If you are not German, you wont get the reference to David Hasselhoff 🤣
I'm not quite sure, but I sink - sorry _think_ - that Günther says "Sch..ße", not his father.
From when is the second commercial? I can't remember seeing it. Maybe it ran at the time I had stopped watching TV.
Fun fact: the German coastguardmen is english nativespeaker in Reallife...
I am German, and my name is Günther, too. 😁
Too bad most regular German TV spots are rather bland/boring. This one is a rare exception and I think it was just running in limited cinemas in northern(?) Germany.
Coast Guard transcript:
- Das hier ist mein Sektor.
- This (here) is my sector.
- Das hier ist das wichtigste Gerät des Küstenwächters.
- This (here) is the most important device of the Coast Guardian.
- Das Gerät und das Gerät … überlebenswichtig.
- This device and this device… essential for survival.
- Überlebens…radar.
- Survival… radar.
Well the coast guard spot was used at the movies, I or at least I remember seeing it there, Cinema ads tend to be a lot more creative than those made for TV. I also remember a good one for Merdedes Benz where the Grim Reaper took a ride in one because it was so save but sadly I cannot fint it anywhere.
Does Günther hold the German Flag upside down? 😂😂 🇩🇪
maybe it's intentional
I don´t know there was a commercial with the national anthem ^^
Check out Cannes Lions (Commercials Awards, different playlists for different years available).
The first xommercial was about a british family or? Saw the wife and thought "yeah they are british"
Edit: of course an english family
Right, they look like british, not german at all. And the newspaper is in english.
At first I thought they were Americans, because of the house, which was too big for English, but the driving on the "other" side disproved that idea.
I did not get the first one either, as an Austrian. The second one is well known
well the person who uploaded the frist video has an "iron cross" as their channel picture which was used during WW2 (and 80 years before that)
could maybe be a bit questionable
Was the song in the first video censored/replaced? I remember it with a different song(„die schwarze barbara“ by Heino, first verse of it)
I think you're confusing smth here. The song in the video was the national anthem of Germany. And this one has already existed for at least 100 years. Heino's "Schwarze Barbara" is what we call "Schlager"
@@Marcel._B thx for the clarification, but i do know that(i'm from germany). If you click on the source video, even there it's played with "schwarze barbara", so i assume it's some copyright issue
@@Coloris Oh my bad then
Sinking (versinken in german) or thinking..that is here the question.
I think the son said "scheiße" himself, not the father.
never ever saw the MTV commercial.
the Berlitz language school commercial superbly describes germans speaking english. I know too many people speaking like that, unfortunately. luckily it improves over time when they are forced to use english more often.
but with the Deutsche Bahn this way of (really badly) speaking english is head on.
You should react to the german pumpgun song
Correct me if I'm wrong but in the first one at the end when he is holding the German flag...does it just look like it or is the flag really upside-down 😅😅😅
I am a bit confused - because I have known the Günther commercial for years, and the music does not match... the original was with a Heino song (Die Schwarze Barbara) - this version has the German national anthem, which actually makes it a lot more cringe to me...
Danke!
Thank you so much!
Ryan
@@ryanwass You're welcome! I really like your videos!
The second clip is very German 😂
He's holding a flag (gold💛-red❤️-black🖤?!), that doesn't exist! 😅 😂 🖤❤️💛Deutschland💖 if there is a message, i can not see it.
The second is realy funny 😆🤣🤣🤣
The German flag was upside down. That's a no-go! Never confuse 'Dutch' and 'Deutsch'. You'll get flak from both sides.
Perhaps it is intentional that the flag is upside down.
@@Maria-js9ou Of course it is!
@03:37 => this one is best.
