  • Karl Jaspers gives a lecture on what philosophy is as part of a series of 12 radio talks he gave in Basel in 1949 called "Introduction to Philosophy" (Einführung in die Philosophie). The translation is my own.

This is superb, thank you very much. ... If possible, I would like to hear the other radio talks by Jasper.

Not exactly sure what he's talking about, but I could listen to him all day long.

It was also a great lesson in Hochdeutsch! I feel a deep resonance with Karl Jaspers, in part because Max Weber is my intellectual hero. See Randall Collins (1998) The Sociology of Philosophies (Cambridge, MA: Belknap-Harvard University Press). 743, 746, 748, 777, 781, 1-19n39. One reason I like Jaspers is his links to Northwestern
Germany. It is in that region that the Frisian islands are a common destination for many people in the Summer. (We have been watching the Danish tv show: Seaside Hotel. It is an interesting soap opera in part because a part of it is set during the time of the military occupation of Denmark by the Wehrmacht.)
