WOW!!! WOW!!! Dear old South Lodge...! One of the loveliest places I've ever lived in!
I'm nearly 70 now and I put 'South Lodge, Driffield' just now up on the internet, I was nostalgic and wondered what it's like now, if someone had ever bothered to video anything.
I was 6 when my dad was the Farm Manager at Sunderlandwick Estate - 1961/3 - and our family obviously got use of South Lodge whilst he worked there..
The owner of the Estate then was Sir Tommy Ferens (I'm guessing there's a historic connection between his family and why the town centre area of Hull was called 'Ferensway?).
I loved living there - the hugely overgrown mess of weeds there now was then a neatly-kept cottage garden with a lovely mown grass lawn at the back which led off to some woods - I used to go and make dens in it with Terry Allen, his sister Lynne, and other kids, all of us estate families.
Dad eventually taught me to how use an air rifle - in the back garden, shooting old tins off the fenceposts!
I can remember him driving our mini out of that garage frequently.
Going in from the front door, my room was the first on the left. My parents' the next one along. Nowadays, every room and the Lodge itself seems so small. But then, it was the biggest room I'd ever had. I also remember our phone number there being 'Driffield 2325'...my mum taught me about phones, and made me memorise our number.
There was a drive past the house from that noisy main road to a gated field and the entrance to our place - it used to have a herd of cows grazing there occasionally. I remember there were two large, long-established horse-chestnut trees flanking each side of our driveway by the main road. I gradually climbed up into them a bit and shook branches to get loads of conkers, in in the Autumn - I got swaps of all sorts of junk from school mates.
There were also pheasants making ground-level nests in that field every Summer. My dad was involved in organising occasional 'Pheasant Shoots' for those who'd be prepared to pay for such events.
If you take that main road going left out of South Lodge, in less than a mile there is another road, a junction on the left also leading down to the Estate, and just there is (I presume, still) North Lodge; I'll look that up next!
I particularly remember the winter of 1963 - the weather was atrocious! The whole region got snowed in, and I remember, watching so excitedly as a helicopter dropped hay bales for the animals as there was no way for cattle to find food for several weeks. I vaguely remember Estate land-rovers bringing us our shopping.
I went to the primary school in Driffield, and we simply flagged the bus down as it came along.
My parents used to drink at pubs (I think there were three?) in the nearest village, called Hutton Cranswick - turn right out of South Lodge. I'd be parked on a bench at the back of the pub with comics, soda water and a pack of crisps, for an hour or so. My dad played in the Hutton Cranswick cricket team.
We moved to Hull in 1964, I missed South Lodge so much for a while.
Ah - well, 'Thanks for the Memories' as the old song goes. 'Scuse this now old fart waffling on...but I suddenly feel I'm about 6 again. A huge surprise but very special.

@@newmotorcycleguy Many thanks for your responses NMG. Ah well - life goes on eh? Hope someone finds South Lodge - or whatever it becomes in future - as special a place as I did to live in.

Sunderlandwick Hall was my grandmother and grandfather's family's home - my Dad was born there, but in one of the other buildings as the VJ Day fire had already happened by then I believe. So fascinating to see the area - thank you! Edit: Guessing the initials EHR stand for Edward Horner Reynard who was one of the early owners.

Little update on the lodge. Its been renovated and is now an AirBnb. I took a trip out to it when the builders were taking the roof off as I thought they were going to demolish it but they said it was grade 2 listed. Its been done up really nice inside and outside as well. Not too keen personally on the back of the building being painted grey for some reason but it still looks really good

thank you for this, I also saw it was renovated. I think the back it painted as that's an extension. The room where i find the hole is added on. This is built over an old well.

It's like the tardis. Looks smaller from the road as you drive past. Needs doing up and someone living in it. What a waste of a lovely property. Practically criminal to leave it to rot

yes it definitely needs saving, though the recent cutting of trees, may suggest a new housing estate?
