Not to take anything away from the good ol’ USA...but from this you’d think that angled decks, steam catapults and mirrored landing systems were American innovations rather than, in fact, British. The first jet landing on a carrier was also carried out by a Brit.
Enterprise returned to Pearl Harbor Dec 8, 1941. She had been delayed 24 hours by weather and otherwise would have been present for the raid. Upon seeing the destroyed fleet as Enterprise arrived, Halsey remarked "from this day on Japanese will be a language spoken only in hell". Yorktown was in the Atlantic from May 1941 not returning to the Pacific (San Diego) until December 30, 1941. Lexington returned to Pearl on December 10, 1941, and Saratoga was laid up for repairs in San Diego.
Having watched a little further I've just noted the narator crediting the US with steam catapults, angled flight decks and mirrored landing sights, NONE of these were American ideas. All of them originated in the Royal Navy.
@RobertBienenfeld No, they served their purpose and they're worn out. They've been maxed out and there may not be much more that can be technically done with them. The Enterprise (CVN-65) itself probably should have been retired and replaced well over a decade ago. Look, a 20-25 year lifespan is considered long for any seagoing vessel whether it's a government or private commercial ship. 40 years or more service means a ship is ancient! Gets harder to operate older ships.
I think the following will demonstrate what macbrack04 was getting at: At 23:25 the narator states: "The first jet carrier landing was made by an FH-1 Phantom in July 1946"... This is flat out not true yet is presented as fact. In reality the first jet carrier landing was made by a Dehavilland Sea Vampire flown by Eric Brown (RN) aboard HMS Ocean on December 4th 1945...
The first jet landing on a carrier was made by Lt Cdr Eric "Winkle" Brown who landed on HMS Ocean in the specially modified de Havilland Vampire LZ551/G on 3 December 1945. Stop changing historia.
@macbrack04: ok ok you got it man. THANK YOU!!!! for The Angled Deck and Mirror Landing system. We really appreciate it!!! In turn, had the soviets had the balls to come sailing down to the north Atlantic, we would have kept those sea lanes open for you guys. Anyway once again THANK YOU. We really mean it!! lol
Fallenphoenix, it's the US Navy presenting...it's obvious the topic is all premised on the US Navy history. They weren't just taking credit for overall history and dates.
That Ki-43 'zero' is a real beauty. No credit 2 the Brits 4 several developments; shame. Gotta love any view of the Skyknight or the Vigilante (💜💜💜). Poor 'old' Langley.
@macbrack04 id like to know how what you are saying has anything to do with this video? Plus why you hating dude. americas navy is the best in the world so get over it
But now all these ships are moth balled in Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Wilmington Navy Yards, so what gives? As I've seen them just sitting there. Does that mean Russia won? And took over the USA and put all Navy USA Ships Moth balled?
Yet again, with breath-taking arrogance and more just a large dose of hyperbole, americans try to take credit for the inventions/development and operation of technology which in fact was done by other countries!!!
From 18:08 to 18:30 the aircraft is mis identified as a Zero, Mistubishi A6M,, the plane in the film is actually a Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa
Angled flight decks, steam catapults and mirror landing systems were all British innovations. Again changing history.
as a carrier sailor this is a great film.

Gotta love the abuse of that "jet launch" sound byte in the first part. ;)

The Zero was called Zekes. Zero is a Hollywood word.
