The forward angle is for bullet fragment deflection... it dissipates the energy (and shrapnel) toward the ground and not back toward the shooter.
Dueling trees are fun with two people shooting simultaneously. The first one to move all targets to the opposite side is the winner.

Once again, good info and demonstration! Thank you

Looking to buy this. Your video was great info, thanks. Yes, like the other comment, all steel targets for handguns (shooting within 15-20 yards) should angle down so ricochets are controlled. Also, dude, it's bad enough to shoot without eye protection, but to shoot steel is a little reckless. Thanks for the info though, good job.

Thanks for your comment. You are 100% right about the eye protection. My eyewear somehow went missing and I made the ill-advised choice to shoot anyway rather than drive an hour round-trip to buy some new ones. I remember thinking "I'm gonna get called out for this....and I'll deserve it."

Birchwood state the pedals can take rifle round but the center post is mild steel. You will damage the center post if hit by rifle rounds

It leans forward so the ricochet of the lead goes down to the ground

this is correct. Our shooting club's targets all lean forward. it is for safety as wheelz states.

Thanks Bob. And you are absolutely right. I somehow lost my safety glasses during this trip, and my choice to proceed without them is not something I would recommend to others.

will a 22LR rifle turn the paddles?

I doubt it would, even if hit perfectly centered. It should still make a nice "DING" sound though.

Birchwood makes a dueling tree for Rimfires though. Looks just like this one, just smaller

and the model for 22s way cheaper

  • @Drawde907

250 is cheap . This thing is normally 350-400.
The case isn't high quality but if you pack it right there's no reason would ever fall apart.
It's also sits forward so the bullets don't ricochet back at you

Your 223 velocity is higher than 308 is why you pitted...
