As far back as 1978-80 I worked with quartz crystal. We used Varian wafering machines, lapping machines, K.O. Lee grinders, etc. to slice, lap and round all manner of diameters and thickness of quartz wafers for use in electronics. I still remember a blank that was .077 thick (in inches) would wind up being used in a 1 Megahertz chip.
The amazing thing here, to me, is that after spending that effort to grow the crystal, it seems like somewhere near 25-30% of it is lost as granules removed during cutting (kerf, grinding, polishing, etc)
