The Editing Economy and the Creator Economy are rapidly changing ecosystems, and while the importance of good editors has risen, their monetary value has not. In this episode, Hayden Hillier Smith and Jordan Orme speak to @FilmBooth aka Ed Lawrence on how editors can scale their businesses, participate in ad revenue share, and make more money at their craft.
As these ecosystems undergo swift changes, the significance of proficient editors remains paramount, yet the commensurate financial recognition lags. In this enlightening episode, join Hayden Hillier Smith and Jordan Orme as they engage in a compelling conversation with Film Booth, renowned as Ed Lawrence. Discover invaluable insights into empowering editors with strategies to magnify their enterprises, partake in lucrative ad revenue sharing models, and ultimately amplify their earnings within their artistic endeavors. Don't miss this opportunity to unravel the secrets of thriving in the contemporary editing landscape, bolstering your business acumen, and capitalizing on the evolving digital terrain.
The trio addresses the burgeoning "editing economy", pinpointing the escalating demand for video editors and the challenge of distinguishing oneself in a packed marketplace. They traverse topics from diverse monetization strategies, such as freelancing on platforms like Upwork to pioneering elite agencies, to the art of adept self-marketing for editors. Critical emphasis is laid on the display of sample edits and harnessing the potential of platforms like TH-cam and Instagram. They also unpack the nuanced relationship dynamics between editors and content creators, championing revenue sharing as an incentive for perpetual skill enhancement and the merits of enduring collaborative bonds. The discourse expands to touch upon the multifaceted roles of contemporary editors, spanning from technical mastery to visionary creative direction. Thumbnail design in digital media, the advantages of onboarding local videographers, and the evolution of editors to creators are probed in depth. Other aspects like striking a balance between individual passion and industry commitment, the cutthroat competitive nature of video editing, the allure and challenges of short-form video on platforms like TikTok, and the business complexities where view counts don't directly translate to success are also explored. This episode is a reservoir of insights for video editors and filmmakers in 2023 eager to grasp the industry's pulse. - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
My previous client went on stream and called me a fucking predator and abusive because I charged (and they willingly accepted) $2,000 a month for running their entire TH-cam channel by myself. I edited the videos, I made all the thumbnails. I did analytics and content planning. I was the one who responded to all the comments, I managed membership perks and playlists. Because of what they said, I've lost out on clients that I wanted to work with. Watching this podcast has validated my entire role. I grew that channel from 0 subs to 35k in a year and a half, and it's been one year since they let me go. They have a new editor, but they haven't grown a single inch and are still at 35k... I can't express it enough, how badly this affected my mental health. I deserved way more. Thank you for this podcast.
Thank sucks. Hope things get better for you.
Can't imagine how hard it must've been. I hope you are getting better clients now, you deserve it.
@@kirilladamenya It's been hard, I haven't looked for new clients, I've been working on my own videos. It was sort of traumatizing coming to the realization that I own nothing as an editor. All my work is owned by someone else, and they benefit from it when I'm gone. My role was much more than just an Editor. I was a channel maker. No reason I can't do the same for myself.
Sorry to hear you had such an awful experience!
I just want to put this out there I will pay you more the 2k a month if you can improve my editing and thumbnails and I won’t treat you like crap.
@@DamienTalksMoney I sent you an email
It's me Ed mentions around 11:30 haha. Didn't expect that. I've had the privilege of working with Ed across a few channels/projects over the last year and a half ish. One of the best clients I've ever had, and has recommended my name to a lot of people, which he never had to do but was much appreciated.
Working with someone who was 10x better at editing than I was at the beginning was a massive help too. I've stole so much knowledge and techniques from Ed it's unbelievable
Thanks man :) You put up with all my annoying feedback that would have driven me insane when I was editing for clients ahahaha. You deserve a medal
Your story is inspiring 🔥
A roundtable with Hayden, Jordan, Ed, and Dodford would be godly. The GOATS of TH-cam editing/storytelling.
Thank you to everyone involved in making, editing and posting this content! So much good information!
I'm going to ask for raises rn, I've been working with this guy for 4 months and I'm I've improved nearly 10X (no exaggeration) I'm still working at the same rate I started, and I feel My efforts of delivering every video better than last one has gone unappreciated I'll update with what happened.

Great interview with Ed guys!
The issue with most editors and service providers is that people will commoditize us. Meaning if a client has choices over a few editors, they all look the same, and they will take the cheapest option. But when one editor starts speaking the same language as the client everything begins to make sense for the client.
I believe that if you only want to become an editor without learning the business aspect afterwards you'll be stuck on that level (pay will remain low) for a long time until you level up, or you get lucky with a client who truly values your talent and begins teaching you the pricing and business aspect.
My philosophy is people weren't meant to hone in on one thing their entire lives, but rather have one thing they are amazing at and keep learning additional skills to push their main talent. Like art it is difficult to be innovative. If our inspiration only stems from one genre/show once we begin mixing in different genre/shows we begin to experiment which leads to innovation.
This was an episode i didn't know i needed! Full of great insight and value for editors. LOVE IT.
Charging for editing at the beginning is such a hard thing to get your head around! So glad you have these discussions and can’t wait to watch 😊
Love your videos man
Thanks a bunch for this episode❤
I was laid off by a client I helped grew their channel for over a year. I literally managed the channel from idea curating to shoot the videos to editing to thumbnails to analytics to hook scripting. I was so under paid ($500/month) when we grew from 12k subs to 156k subs, I asked for a raise and my contract was just terminated, it really killed my confidence but this episode is helping me heal❤ Now, I'm just starting my own channel and trying to put in everything to my own channel. Thanks again for this episode
I’m looking for a talented editor to help me growth my channel! I do have a budget for a full time salary. Let me know if you’re that person!
@@axisinvestors I just went through your channel and I entirely understand your content style because my other employer also runs a trading channel. I am the editor you're looking for.
Their loss. 🤷♀️ I hope you’re doing better now!
@@secondchairmusic I'm trying my best, thank you.
Still looking for someone that would appreciate my skills and services
Wow, I'm sorry. I think thats an amazing mentality to have now and use your talent for your own business! I experienced the same thing this last year.... It must be a trend. ha :') 1k subscribers/month + dozens of sponsored videos. What I made in a month is what a client made in one video sponsored. I did 14 videos/month for them. :') I feel your pain. We got this! Only going up my friend
Absolute gold, been editing for Noah Kagan's channel for 3 years but I have a background in marketing, Ed is spot on about having to market yourself.
This was really validating and insightful. I edit for a big TH-cam channel (now nearly 1.5million subs) and have been for almost 2 years now. I think I need to lean on the fact that I've been so loyal and consistent for them in addition to my other clients in asking for more money, possibly in a different format like you guys talked about
How did you meet him?
100 percent. That's an incredible accomplishment and you def deserve the best treatment/pay.
Damn this is the best episode I have ever seen! I love the real questions and even more honest answers! So much meat here! Thank you guys!
Absolute gold! I love this episode.
These guys are giving out TOP TIER info.
This is literally the only podcast I watch.
You guys are knocking it outta the park with your guests ✊🔥 literally a collection of legends being interviewed by some of our ages greatest editors💯🙏❤️ thanks guys
Good stuff, fellas! Great to see Ed on. The ad revenue model is super interesting.
So much good stuff in here! I've been working full-time as an editor for a year and a half, it's great.
Awesome! How did find your first client?
Yes, editors need to start getting paid what they're worth! Ed is awesome! Another great interview, guys. 👍
3 of my favorite editors! Great info guys! like always!
Ed is the man. Great conversation!
Well done! I'm a fan of Ed's for years now.......yet...
You were able to get a great bit of information out of him in just minutes....secrets that I don't recall him sharing anywhere else. Super job!!!
Love this series
Crossover we deserved and needed.
Love this podcast. Loved this interview. One quick cinematography thought... have you ever considered reversing the key? I've noticed your cameras are always shooting from the same direction as your lights. It would likely be much more flattering on your subject if you had lights on the far side. Rigging lights just above frame in the background might be logistically difficult in this space, but thought it might be worth considering. Keep up the great work!
Absolute Gold. Thank you all
Thanks a lot for this podcast 🎉🎉🎉
collab of the year!
Great to see Ed on the show! I've learned so much from him on his channels.
I love Ed! He's awesome! Great video
This was an incredible amount of quality information. Thank you so much for this!
Ed is one of my favorites. Great show!!
So good to see Ed here! :)
Advertiser here. I hate working with agencies knowing there are so many hard working and dedicated editors out there who deserve a better cut. At least from what I know, the problem is finding y'all is more work than it's worth. I can't wait for the outreach to come to me. Fiverr and Upwork takes so much time to sift through the garbage and most of those editors are not looking to do any dedicated anyways. Tell me where to find your work.
oh wow this is exactly where I am at right now, trying to find some work and totally falling flat at the moment! Going to have to take some notes and start some different action!
You guys are very inspiring and motivating. Thanks for that😉
Thank you guys! Raza :)
Fantastic video! I've been an Editor since 2006, landscape has shifted significantly but the core marketing ideas in this episode are timeless. What stands out to me is that the tidal wave of cutting need described seems to be driving partnership (with Editors) at the higher end of the market. I've seen this 100%. Thanks again!
As a wedding editor, I can relate to this video so much, I had one client who loved my work and word of mouth spread and work flooded in, it has been a game changer!
great interview as always guys
i really like this honestly, editors like he said are half of the channel and deserve to be paid as much
I'll need to come back to this sometime!!!
Thank you for the great video guys. I've learned so much about the business of editing and this would defenetiely be my go to video from now on.
as an editor, I found this very helpful!! Thank you!
One of the most valuable eps lads! ✊🏻
As a struggling content creator looking for an editor this gave me a lot to think about. Thanks guys.
I Love ed! Big fan of film booth and creator booth. It's been amazing the past year to see him collab all around.
Love the Finzar collab, the Jay Clouse interview, and now this!! Ed's the real deal and he provides a tremendous amount of value, I can't wait to watch this one!
I love you too :)
Fantastic conversation! My niche audience needs to listen to this, I try my best to answer questions like this daily. This was full of great reminders and strategies.
One suggestion! I don't know how tall the ceiling is in that room but I would suggest a china ball to be placed in the middle of all of you. It can even out the shadows a bit. Happy to send one as well! Keep up the great work! 🤝🏽
thank you sensei
Also: beginning/intro = seemed badass I feel :)
Might be the best video about Video Editing on this platform

Amazing podcast! I usally don't comment, but you guys represent the editors guardians, showing how degraded and undervalued some editors are ! Very eye-opening.

Thanks :)
I'm a one woman show video editor behind a lot of larger TH-cam Channels! I loveee this podcast because you guys really break things down. I'm always having conversations with myself on these topics and have definitely made some mistakes as to not having factored in monetization.. yikes...Thanks for the great insight! :)
wow, wow, wow. thank you very much.
YOOOOOO COLLAB OF A LIFETIME! LEGENDS CROSSING OVER
After years of practice ive finally become a high quality video editor, but my problem has always been trying to find clients who are wiling to pay my worth...I won't settle for small 300/400/500 offers, its a joke! Most of us deserve 10x more but so many content creators are cheap minded n want Hollywood quality for peanuts
O absolutely so many clients have come crawling back after doing 20$ upwork editors
9:20 reciprocity
18:53 - I tried similar to this a few times. And they just take the deal off the table the second the math flips out of their favor. Get a contract, and get a 2nd client as backup.
Fingers crossed! Raza :)
Who is the guy (marketer) Ed recommends at 38:33 in the vid?
This is an avengers level crossover!
Also, Great mug 🤣
Was really great to hear this...Ed talks about working with 'Educators' - but have no idea what he means by that? Coaches or?
Hi. Just starting out. Launch in January. ISO editor for 7-10 and 1-3 min videos
I watch this sighing with exhaustion recalling how underpaid I am with my current client.
The face Hillier made when he said that 😂😂 27:32
Fantastic discussion. One thing I think is funny is a "creator" who can't edit their own videos, doesn't script their own videos, don't make their own thumbnails. Are they really a "creator" at that point? It makes a lot of sense for someone to do the work themselves at first, set a standard, and outsource the work to grow. But to start off not doing the majority of the creative work? Weird to me.
my current main client i got through word-of-mouth from my first client (who i pretty much never work with anymore)
This was a fantastic episode, and as someone who makes a living editing for a creator, I really appreciate hearing outside perspectives. Unless we all talk to each other, this TH-cam game can feel like a vacuum sometimes.
My channel is horrible, I blame a lot of it on the editing. This episode has inspired me to fire the editor.
.....wait, I'm the only one here.
I am available to edit your videos ❤
I have a question for the team/audience:
I havent seen Stir advertised lately, and my team and i wanted to start using the credits and revenue splitting/sharing features that were advertised. But the "Split" link doesnt work on the site, and there is no "Credit" feature. Is anyone able to use these features? Or have solutions for automatically splitting ad revenue with their TH-cam team already?
Glory to God. Enjoying the process and am so excited to see the fruits of my labor.
The problem im having is i can only find the 50 dollar a day "editors" and the 1000 dollar a day film maker editors. Its like there is nothing in between
Well, Are you still looking for an editor? Im a $300 a day editor(totally depends on the video complexity tho)
How do you find an editor? Instagram?
What was the name of the marketer that Ed mentions towards the end? Not Hormozi; the other one
Sabri Suby
This is priceless
I stupidly decided to continue working for my current client after my trial contract expired. Now were going through contract negotiations and he wants me to sign away my current future work as well as my moral rights to it. I'm still in the process of trying to jump ship.
Thank you for sharing this video, this was exactly what I needed.
30:44 he has a team in the Philippines.
Ultimately when it can be outsourced like that then all this advice is great but a race to the bottom.
Become a business owner with outsourced work is the goal I guess.
Get good at editing so you can sell it and have someone else do it but you have the knowledge to talk to the client and editor.
A middle man that rakes the money in. Just don't let the client talk to the editor 🤪
So.. it's like you're the 'Senior Editor/Director of Content'
@@sexymary yeah manage it.
Subcontracting. It’s quite common especially at agencies

GOATs of TH-cam editors in one video 😐
i’m working with a creator with 400k subs, and one with 40k. struggling to balance both because i can’t edit as fast as they want. i have a really good computer as far as specs, but i have constant lag and crashing in my softwares that is bottlenecking the shit out of me. i’m not sure what to do :(
upgrade your computer specs, then. Get a brand new graphics card
@@sexymary that literally can’t be the answer though. i have a 7900x, a 4090, 64gb of 3800mhz ram, a 2tb m.2, etc… it’s an absolute monster of a pc.

@@sexymary yeah, and i dont even use any external plugins anymore as they made it lag even more. i use all my own presets i’ve made. but it’s still not functioning how it should😂
@@sexymary to be fair, i probably shouldn’t even be using premiere for what i’m doing. they’re long form videos; like 45+ minutes each with 20-40 shots all being 1-2 hours long. but i’m just so used to premiere, i don’t want to switch. 😭😂
I’ll pay that, as long as they prove their worth😎

I just found this channel as I'm getting ready to change careers in my mid thirties to pursue editing. This has given me such a clear picture of the current landscape of editing and market value.
I will pick a niche and start mastering it!
Thanks!
34:00 Jordan, I was so happy to find your channel as a Christian editor who was into k-pop at the time. You helped me realize I'd love to work on storytelling music videos (I then animated one over a long time with what I learned) and I appreciate how you've grown in your approach and earnesty. I wish you the best in everything you want to do. Thank you for your creative perspective.
What's the name of his channel?
@@Kesslerlite just Jordan Orme 8^)
I work as an Editor and I make 8 dollars per minute. Usually videos are 20 minutes long, and it takes me 1 hour per minute. I NEVER though editors could make half of the channels revenue, or even anything close to that. Its INSANE.
Now try putting 2 hrs or 4 hrs of editing per min of video.
Is that $8 per minute off of finished product or ? ($8x20 = $160 per finished video). I am trying to learn and know nothing about this...yet. Thanks
