Burning Back Pain with Radio Frequency Ablation

  • Back pain is one of the biggest reasons people visit the doctor. It's often chronic, excruciating pain and keeps people from enjoying a normal life.
To see him today, you would never guess Mike MacDonald was incapacitated following a car crash a year ago.
"The worst thing was just trying to tie my shoes in the morning and getting dressed. It was horrible," says MacDonald.
The pain was in his lower or lumbar spine, the result of injury-related arthritis of the facet joint. When physical therapy didn't work, he foresaw a painful future.
"I figured I'd just turned 50 and I'm in for it," says MacDonald.
"We tried to exhaust all non-interventional options but it became apparent that his pain was lingering and he was sort of at a plateau. And I discussed with him the interventional procedure," says Dr. Christopher Dawson, a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician on the medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System.
Called radio frequency ablation, or RFA, doctors essentially burn away the offending nerves.
"I use a cannulated insulated needle, usually a five millimeter period of area of that does heat up. You want that small bit of area that heats up to be very close to the nerve that you're trying to localize for the actual ablation. And I burn it at four levels and it's for 90 seconds," says Dr. Dawson.
Prior to the procedure, nerves are tested with a pain block to make sure that once disabled, the pain would be diminished by at least 50 percent. For most people, the 'hot shot' kills the problem.
"I won't see a patient back for anywhere from three to four weeks because it may take that long for them to tell optimal benefit," says Dr. Dawson.
Mike is back on his feet and back to his favorite past times.
"I was almost in tears, because I didn't think I'd ever be right again, I didn't. I thought it was going to change my whole lifestyle," says MacDonald.
Most importantly, he's back to seeing a bright future.

I had this done and the results are amazing, absolutely amazing! It was a long procedure since the insurance company Blue shield wanted me to get two sets of cortisol with lidocaine injections so that there was proof the radiofrequency ablation would work. The cortisol in lidocaine basically maps out the back for the doctor and shows him what spots give you relief and what spots don't so he can burn the correct set of nerves. My first set of shots worked in the second set did not so we were able to establish which nerves to burn. My doctor was very careful not to jump in and just start burning nerves. Anyhow I am very happy with the results I thought I would be a cripple the rest of my life but I'm back to construction and lifting 70 pound pieces of lumber with no problem. I do wake up with a lot of pain in my legs which I never had before that goes clear up to my hips which is something new but if that's the only problem it's a good trade-off since 10 minutes of stretching in the morning makes the pain in my hips go away. I would highly recommend it but you better check out your doctor for references they better be darn good at what they're doing. Watch out for the quacks, there out there and they will mess you up!!!!!! I found a lot of good information on yelp, trust me if there is a bad doctor out there he's going to get yelped to death from unhappy patients. Beware of good results from people that do not have a long history on yelp. If the person only has one review this could easily be an Astroturfer. Astroturfing is when doctors hire public relations firms to make them look good on Google searches. If a person gives the doctor a good review take a look at their other reviews and make sure they're just not giving everyone a glowing review. If they don't give any bad reviews there probably Astroturfers working for a public relations firm. Use your intuition when researching, buyer beware!

I just had this done a few days ago. I have a little pain where the needles were injected, but this morning, I woke up and stood up straight for the first time in over 2 years. Phil you must have never felt the pain that comes with having a bad back. Every thing I loved doing came to a stop. I tried everything else. This was like a miracle for me.

@@MP-po6fj you can have it done however long the pain is gone. Now I usually have the procedure every year. It seems like when I first started the pain would return in 6-7 months now it keeps the pain away until the nerves grow back which in my case annually. I was hit with explosives in 69 at 20 years old, this started a continuous deterioration of four of my spinal vertebrae in my lower back.
45 years later, last year in August, I was in rollover car accident. A young guy ran the light, hit me , spin me around twice, roll me over twice. Car landed on it's top. My seat belt wouldn't open, I was suspended up side down for 3 minutes until I was able to open the belt.
This accident aggravated my precondition of my back.
My life has been one big "#9 pain levels" in the ass , ever since!!
I take the procedure soon, I believe it will work for me! Geno

I just had the anesthetic injects a week ago... both sides L3-L4, L4-L5, L5-S1. It worked great, so now I'm just waiting for insurance to approve the ablation procedure. I can't wait!

  • @puzzlefactory6447
    @puzzlefactory6447 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I had mine done on the 1st of Oct. For L4 L5.left side.Today is the 5th.The Dr. told me it would take 2-3 weeks to kick in. I did feel immediate relief but that was only the minor pain from the procedure masking my back pain. He did many injections for months to find the nerve/nerves where to do the RF.
I get the second one for the right side on the 15th of Oct. In the meantime I have an appointment with a surgeon.
From the research side of things wouldn't it be great to dye a protein that would be attracted to only to the irritated nerve and glow when the imaging machine was used. That would be a time saver and a sure thing can't miss.

Needless to say, at age 36 and 17+ years of failed conservative treatments, I am FINALLY going to have something more agressive done. The RFA seems promising, and I am getting it tomorrow. So scared. After multiple epidural injections, nerve root blocks and multiple spinal fluid leaks and three spine surgeries later the horrific problems continue now I’m being faced with these nerve ablation procedures. I’m highly concerned because the aftermath of epidural injections in my neck left me with Essential Tremors since 2017. I’m highly concerned now having anyone get that close to my nerves in my spine. “Is it just me or is there anyone else out there experiencing such a huge amount of bad luck with their spine”

Back again. I got my second RF procedure done on the 15th on my right side. This time it really hurt but not enough to stop considering all the back pain I'm going through. Also my right side is the healthy side, or non herniated. Now I wait.
As I mentioned earlier the next step is a consultation with the surgeon who by the way seems to be top notch, I'm pretty sure I know what he has to offer.
I have an older friend who moved to Florida several years ago, he's 92 years old and in good shape with no special diet but he does exercise by walking.
He had herniated a disk and went to a doctor (GP) who put him on Tramadol and Oxycodone (same as me) . He wasn't happy at all taking painkillers so he went to a chiropractor who just happens to have a new procedure for back treatment. For lack of a better term it's a spring loaded gun with about 45lbs.of force, when the trigger is pulled this spring is released and hits the spine in the neck. He has gone a few times and now claims to be 100% pain free! I had jokingly said then send me your Tramadol. He did! Here is a web site: www.citruschiro.com
    108 W Highland Blvd.,
    Inverness, FL. 34452
    (352)344-1300
Maybe theres a chiropractor in your area that has the same procedure or just ask about it. Good Luck Everybody.

You could remove your back pain once and for all by change your diet plan a little - I've try and now nearly relief all the pain. In my opinion you should try it

If your back pain is caused by a car accident like this guys was, I'm pretty sure a diet change won't fix it. Don't be daft.

+Ken Primeau (命運) absolutely fantasic,I had every thing you could think of done to try and fix my problem but nothing worked, after getting nerve endings burnt I've now been 95% pain free for a year, had to wait 4weeks for the pain to go away after the surgery,my advise is to be careful and try to avoid any heavy lifting.i won't lie it was very painful getting done but we'll worth it,

+MrDannys376 thanks, a friend is having it done in the morning and she is very scared because it's the spine and things could happen. 60°c-90°c burn in the wrong place could be a bad thing. we literally lay in the doctors hands and hope he got the best schooling money can buy. I watched another video and cringed every time he stuck those needles in their back. thanks for your reply.

+Ken Primeau (命運) I hope things go well, surgeon's have done this many times so I'm sure your friend will be in safe hands,I'm not sure if you want to tell them this but what happened me was the needles at the start go in and have to hit the nerves to get the worst of the pain which means that is the main nerves giving the problem, after that's done then you feel nothing, always good to have pain killer tablets for the weeks to come :)Let me no how they get on

yeah that's it, just burn away the pain. brilliant, that's equivalent to just pulling the plug on the "low oil alarm" in your car and saying "yay i fixed my low oil problem" LMAO modern medicine is so primitive.

Geno

There are many components to relieving sciatica pain quickly. One plan I discovered which succeeds in merging these is the Barneys Back Aid (check it out on google) it's the most useful plan that I've seen. look at the awesome info .
