Your Expensive Camera Can't Take Photographs…

  • I bought a Sony NEX 5 for £47 and I hopefully proved the point that the camera doesn't really matter when it comes to taking nice photographs.

Anyone who thinks you need the latest, greatest and most expensive is every camera store owners dream. I am still trying to get the grey matter that's 2 inches behind my camera to work.

Yet for some reason pro photographers are not running around with 56 punds cameras. Why's that? They are the ones who are supposed to know the craft, aren't they?

Never a truer word spoken. I've just bought an om1 and sold all my full frame gear. The reason was it was three times the weight of my new kit. Yep it has superb technical quality. But so does the new gear. It's a few pixels less but unless you're printing huge images 5 foot or so you cannot really tell. I am still learning the camera but I know I'm going to get good images with this.

Spot on, Chris! I recently went to a zoo and found a lion up on the hillside looking like Mufasa from "The Lion King." Went to shoot it with my Lumix G95 and found I hadn't packed a long lens (Note to self: don't do that again).
There only other gear I had with me was an 11 year old Pentax Q7 with it's 12 megapixel, tiny 1/1.7" sensor. BUT it had the telephoto zoom on it, so I zoomed to about a 204 mm equivalent field of view and took the shot.
Is it perfect? No! Should I enter it in a contest? No! Did it capture a priceless memory? YES! would I rather have this imperfect photo than to have missed the shot? YES!
[Imagine imperfect but priceless photo here.]

I’ve always shot with my trusty D750. But I’ve recently bought a used EM MKii, and it’s changed the way I take images totally. I use it for macro with the 60mm and landscapes with the 14-150. I love it, I shoot handheld a lot more now and the 750 stays at home a lot more now. 😂

So very true Chris. I shoot with M4/3 and get so sick of people saying you can’t get great pictures, print big with it due to its lack of megapixels, utter rubbish. I take and print great pictures with my 12mp iPhone that look great on the wall. Great video as always really enjoyed this one.👍

Probably mentioned before but some of my best recent photos were taken with my original 12 year old 12 mega pixel, steam powered Olympus E-PM1 with the LUMIX 12-32 kit lens. I just learnt to use Manual, Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority properly to get the best results.

Hi Chris, I have 5 digital cameras, one of which is 20 yrs old. Two of my cameras only cost around £100 used. They are superb, have loads of features, but as you say, it is down to me to get the photo. Often when hiking longer distances I will only take my phone to save weight, but even then I get great shots. I vary the height I take photos from and always try to get some interesting close foreground in to create ‘depth’ to the shot. Imagination, and composition is the key!

  • @TonyGEdwards

Hi Chris, while THE camera isn’t important to have a camera is important. You cannot take an image without an image taking machine. It doesn’t matter if it’s a pinhole camera or a $10,500 Canon R1 (that’s in Australian dollars). Yes, the photographer takes the photo but it needs to be recorded some how. I personally have given up watching gear review TH-cam channels as I have the equipment I both want and enjoy. I choose to shoot film and digital. Shoot with whatever gear you like as long as you are inspired to get out and use it.

The camera and all the accessories that go with it are a tool - how you use that tool is up to you AND it is the result you create with it that ACTUALLY really matters! Any relationship between image quality and cost is a complete myth - again it is down to how you get the best out of the tools.

A camera from a hundred years ago can do a good job. If you know what you are doing. Same thing with cameras from the last ten years. You know what your'e doing with 10 year old gear, you can take great photos.

This is just what I need to hear today. I only started taking photos about 4 months ago and have been really enjoying the process. I have an art background and access to a few old cameras. I love taking pictures and constantly want to improve. Now the imposter syndrome is settling in and the camera I love so much doesn't seem good enough!
The truth is that I just need to be patient and experiment with what I have. You are absolutely right about the time of the day. I have recently been busy at work and with family so I have been putting pressure on myself to take pictures when I can but this can lead to some quickly taken uninspiring images.
Like I said I needed to watch this video today. Thank you 😊

Very true, seen a bit of a backlash to the usual larger YT gear review channels recently I unfollowed pretty much all of them as they over exaggerate even the most minor upgrades and often ignore/belittle downgrades. Some people are very swayed by brands, sensor sizes and the latest gear though, I remember telling someone in a camera group I was in that I bought the then new Fuji X-Pro 3, all of a sudden they thought my photos were great till I told them it was a secondhand GX80...they were not happy

You definitely showed the proof that skill trumps equipment those shots are awesome.
I remember watching a TH-cam channel about 10yrs ago where they had pro-photographers do something called the cheap camera challenge. They were given cheap like really cheap cameras (one was a Barbie doll with a digital camera in it), they showed that it doesn’t make a difference what the cost of the camera is it only matters how your composition skills are. When I was about 6 we went on holiday for Christmas I had a cheap film camera that was in the shape of a panda face, my mum had a film Canon SLR . When she took in couple of our rolls, all of mine turned out but not of hers did.

We all heard the expression "all the gear and no idea ". Or
It's not what you've got but what you do with it.

I love this so much because it bucks the system of TH-cam. The platform is pushing the latest and greatest gear more than just getting out to shoot. I have found over the last few years that TH-cam has become a huge commercial for products in every industry. It’s said because I learned everything that I know about photography from this platform but now you just get people pushing the newest gear on here. Thanks for this video showing that it’s more about the experience than the ad sale

Brilliant video Chris with some important take-home points! I think back to decades ago when I got the latest and greatest Canon A-1, and then years later spent a fortune on my Canon 50 D, and then moved onto my Canon 5D mark IV which at the time revolutionized the photographic world. Now, how is it any of those cameras which each at their own time took world class, incredible photos, suddenly no longer be any good because they are not a mirrorless? ie expensive!
Now, having said that I’m definitely someone that can suffer from bouts of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome.) I think the bane of all photographers is to hear the comment “what a nice picture you must have a really good camera!“ Aargh. Great session. Thank you

Really enjoyed this video Chris, especially as it was about photography in general. 100% agree with you on this topic although if you could afford the best quality lens you would get a sharper image. Maybe your viewer thinks we all have creative flare but just need a better camera. I think people have to ask themselves what they want from this first. For me, photography is about escaping from the four walls and enjoying the outdoors on my own. It doesn’t matter to me whether I take a single picture or not, photography is about me time.
Keep up the good work mate 😊

People that sneer at photographers with older gear, are just insecure and feel the need to justify their own expensive purchases to themselves. I think.
Meanwhile I take advantage of their shiny new kit syndrome, and buy their discarded gear off them at the fraction of what they cost new. And it is still good.

A camera is nothing but a light tight box. In the case of a film camera it only has two duties, to house the shutter and its mechanism and to transport the film. Not so different with digital, although a very different and advanced computer technology is at work. Leave a camera on the table for a thousand years and see if it manages to walk to the beach and take sunrise photo by itself? I have a few Leica and Nikon cameras, two Hasselblads and a few digital cameras from different manufacturers. None of them makes the photograph, I do. I think the sooner people realise this the better.

I used to think this however it's all relative to purpose. For what you are doing here then yes of course it doesn't really matter however you will have a much easier time with a more modern setup for something like high end sports or wildlife and not to say you wont get a shot or two but I know if I went to the Olympics with the camera you are using here then the guy next to me shooting with a Sony A7IV will 100% be leaving with more shots to choose from and a bigger smile on his face. All cameras are capable for these types of shots, especially in good light but there is definitely an element of gear mattering more for very specific genres where modern technology is more superior than that of old.

This is only half of the truth. It is true, that you can take great photographs with almost any camera. However "bad" camera limits you. That's the difference between the cheap and expensive kit. Cheap one will let you take great photographs 10% of the time. Expensive one will let you do that 95% of the time. Try shooting sport events indoors with 8Mpx camera with a slow focus and 6,3-8 zoom. How many good ones you will go home with? Zero.
So have a camera that does not limit you . Is it 56 quids camera? Great. Is it 15 000 setup? Great.
