There's one thing missing from this documentary- Tim Byrne, the ex-manager. I know he and H are no longer together, but he hasn't shared his side of the story. For some reason, they didn't give him the chance to explain his actions, or at least apologize to the other members (Faye, Lee, Lisa) for his role in the split. His handling of the vocals issue, the secret relationship with H, and leaving with H & Claire. Faye's comment that songwriters were writing for the duo indicate that Byrne had been planning this for quite some time....
Maybe he's too ashamed to admit that he took advantage of Five Young People. Alot of Managers are really bad. Remember what happened with Louis Walsh (Girls Aloud). He made a pointed remark about their weight and he didn't even "Manage" them. Kimberley Walsh Managed them for Two Years before Hilary Shaw took over who also as you know managed Banarama. If TLC had a Manager like Hilary instead of that "Thief" Peri "Pebbles" Reid former Wife Of LA Reid that Cheryl Ann Tweedy worked with briefly on The X Factor US things woudl have worked out differently.
@@laminage I think this seems to be common to a lot of 90s/00s pop acts. Most of them became successful in their late teens/early twenties (some even younger, Billie Piper wasn't even 16 when her first single went to number one). You are still quite vulnerable at that age, but you see a lot of them now and how splitting up or being dropped affected them. And I'll be honest here, a lot of these so called managers - Tim being one, Nigel Martin Smith with Take That being another and Lou Pearlman being a whole other can of worms with Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC and O-Town, should've known better and quite patently demonstrated that they had no business managing these acts in the first place.
I wasn't aware of the secret relationship but that now clearly explains why Lee was never given much to sing in the early years as H wanted the spotlight on himself as much as possible, even though his talent level was questionable...
I used to like them equally before realizing their problems and the split. Now my only favorite is Faye, vocally, personally and in any other ways. I cried when Faye asked “ did you really hate us? “
this is all history but this is a classic example of how inequality in any kind of group ultimately leads to conflict. the classic example is The Supremes (Diana Ross). Three ladies started singing and each had some lead songs - jump forward a couple of years and Diana Ross was pushed to the front leaving the other two ladies very hurt and dejected. Eventually the group split and Diana Ross did not talk to the other ladies for some years. There has been conflict in most bands. The key is to let everyone have their own significance within the group (sharing the leads) and also ensuring you have similar personalities. Once you mix personalities and levels of talent, you end up with friction.
I'll tell you this much: half the issues that festered amongst them for years were partly because of their manager Tim. After reading Claire's autobiography and seeing how other bands have been treated in the industry in the past, I'm no doubt he was definitely a contributor to the problems the band members had with one another. He sounds like a complete Svengali figure who was pulling their strings behind the scenes.
He really was. I'm sure Faye, Lisa & Lee knew their vocal capabilities compared to Claire, they don't want to be the leader but they're a vocal group, they just want to get fair share of line distribution but Tim Byrne couldn't understand it.
Knowing now that they are on tour again in 2022, makes me glad they sorted things out. But I didn't know about this split 10 years ago, I'm thinking this new tour is happening because the group aren't as well of as they should be for the success they had .
This is really quite awkward to watch. And also... I feel like I'm losing respect for H here, he seems to be just agreeing with the others and leaving Claire in the lurch, when it was both of them who decided to leave the way they did.. But in saying that, Claire, who has always been my favourite, does interrupt a lot. I've gotten lot more respect for Lee, who is quite calm..
@@olliestone5051 I agree with RainyDayWitch. It seems to me that H was letting Claire take all of the heat. As I watched this video, I wondered if this scene would have even been shot if H and Claire had been successful as a duo. They likely wouldn't give the other 3 the time of day for this talk, publicly made comments about how much they "love" their former singing partners, and never acknowledged that they basically shafted them. Faye comes across very well in this --- specifically voices her concerns, allows them to respond and never loses her cool. Lee also is very calm about the entire thing. Personally, I wouldn't have much dealing with Claire or H as I would never truly trust either one of them again.
That isn't fair on H at all. If he felt tonnes of regret about the split & Claire felt like she had 2 do it 4 herself so they're coming from 2 different perspectives. H has the right 2 regret as much as Claire has the right 2 stand by her decision
It sounded like H was immature and fame got to his head a lot and of course he was hyperactive as well. What he said to Lee about him not singing was bang out of order. I think H has calmed down a lot lately and realised what he was like.
DaNgEr88GiRL I think the whole situation had the biggest effect on Faye ❤️ breaks my hearts because I fee she’s the nicest and most genuine out of the group.
I remember when I first watched this back in 2011 and I was shocked to learn the truth but in a way I'm actually glad to have learnt what actually happened that very night at the gold tour because when I was 9 years old I was just oblivious to what was going on but to find out not until the New Year from someone at my school that steps broke up it just broke my heart because back then steps was a huge part of my life and still is to this day. I totally understand Claire and H's reasons because I've been in similar situations where I've been isolated but I think the problem of the spilt was the lack of communication I think because Claire and H felt that they weren't close to Lee, Lisa or Faye at all and that's probably why there wasn't a lot of communication there because maybe they felt they couldn't tell them about how they were feeling because if you are feeling uncomfortable towards someone because they've may have treated you in a certain way or said something to you that makes you not want to be around them then I don't think personally I would want to go and talk to them about my problems even if I work with them but I do agree the situation could have been handled differently. But then again if this split didn't happen we wouldn't have had this documentary the number one Ultimate Collection album, the Amazing sold out ultimate tour, the light up the World album, The Christmas tour of 2012 and of course the 20th anniversary celebration last year. Everything happens for a reason so in a way I think it was destined that they split was meant to happen so then the band could get back together and move on to do bigger and better things together as a band and as friends and look at them now they're closer than ever. And I am so lucky to have been part of this journey since 1997 ever since I first saw 5678 on the music video channel and just following the journey as a steps fan and then eventually becoming a steps superfan due to my loyalty, dedication and standing by them for the last 21 years
Faye handled it amazing and kept H and Claire accountable but I feel Claire didn't take any responsibility or have any remorse just turned the tears on when Faye was only wanting a straightforward answer I thought was rude of Claire
I was hoping that when Lisa asked who ended the group Steps, the answer would be their manager Tim Byrne but no it's not. It means both H and Claire are the main instruments for the split.
I'm glad that they had this opportunity to just express their pains and grudges about what had happened ten years ago. It's healthy to have a confrontation. Currently, they are much healed and mature which makes me happy.
Uniting, not siding with management and putting fame and fortune ASIDE makes a band a life long union with real life long relationships (not just a public working facade). Example of bands that united against management are: New Kids on the Block Back Street Boys NSync Hence till this day they remain as a band or life long friends.
putting this out there, Claire is indeed that voice that carried this group...it's always like this..it's mass appeal...but I'm glad they have matured from this and
the other girls were VERY catty towards Claire back then.....because she didn't drink and party, but stayed in at night....and very catty that Claire got more leads due to the better voice. I think I would've left as well!!!
Claire: If you look back at probably the issues that we had ten years ago and you think about them now, they are actually really silly Faye: What were the issues? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Lost a lot of respect for Claire here, diverting from answering the questions with her crocodile tears I just don't buy it. But also the fact she just didn't seem to recognise that the way in which she left was completely wrong. She might say they weren't close enough to have that talk but at the end of the day if there was a clause in their written group agreement then she's obliged to fulfill it just like we all are when you hand in your notice, regardless of how good/bad your rapport is with managers etc.
i grew up loving all of them as a band, ironically H and Claire where my least fav - then they go out as a duo. Lisa and Lee where always my favs, but after watching this - going forward FAYE is veery much a fav fav now , so impressed by her getting questions answered for her - for them - FOR US FANS
I thought Claire and H were really selfish to make that sudden decision without informing the other three especially right before a major show. It also really annoys me how Claire isn’t the least bit apologetic and thinks that what she’s done wasn’t wrong. At least H apologised and can admit it was a wrong decision. I feel Claire is very selfish and a bit of a prima-donna Diva. Faye handled this situation so well and it shows that she is more mature than Claire. I also feel that there’s a lot of tension between Lisa and Claire and I can kind of understand why. I don’t get why Lee didn’t hardly say anything.
Let's face it Claire and H wanted to be soloists, they kept getting more and more lines but in the end they quit because they thought there was jealousy between them and the other members. It was a very selfish narcissistic situation. Did Claire not stop to think that Lisa, Lee and Faye wanted to be singers all their lives too, this was all about her and still most likely is. Even in this documentary you can see she is deluded thinking it wasn't her fault and that she was ganged up on.
I think she was. The others were jealous that as the superior vocalist she got all the main focus in a lot of their songs. If they were all such great singers, why didn't they have great successful careers after Steps? Simple - none of them except Claire was as good as they thought they were. It's the same with S Club 7, what exactly have they done since breaking up? A couple tried solo careers that went nowhere. They were a great as a team, no good alone
Claire needed to apologise here. That's all that was needed. H apologised in his way. Claire needed to. I kbps this was ten years ago. It's extremely brave of Steps to do this. It's a great lesson about humility. Saying sorry doesn't cost anything.
I love Steps so much and I was gutted when I found out they split but this was like a few years after because I was only little when they split. And now watching all of these reunion interviews and them reflecting back on what happened on that night, it does make people realise that they shouldn't be so quick to judge. If Faye, Lisa and Lee all left, Claire and H would've felt the same way that they did back then. And yes, they had had enough and although H and Claire got together as a duet not long after, it's not like they formed a duet like a day after the split or anything. Faye has always exaggerated on why the band split the way they did and Lee and Lisa had her back on confronting Claire and H. It was their choice to leave, they didn't have to explain themselves. But, its 20 years into their music business now and they've reunited to get back out there and make themselves, their families and their fans proud. Let's just hope they don't keep bringing up the past all because of the way they left the group and their friends. It was probably just a spur of the moment, anyone else would've done the same. No disrespect to anyone. I am a huge Steps fan, I developed a passion for them because of my sister, just like I developed a passion for other bands like Westlife, S Club, Boyzone, A1, Backstreet Boys, McFly, Busted, etc. Sorry my comment is so long by the way LOL.
i wondered after all that have been said here in this table.. how did they end the conversation.. for us viewers.. its like everything is up in the air.. next thing we saw steps has a new album and tour around the country.. maybe all well annd ends well.. hope we also be part of that rresolution that you guys concocted before stepping into a tour
started this year hearing there music was obbsed with them the videos the have done i agree everybody who are fans of them whatever yes they said that stuff was gabage still fans do love them
Oh..my...I'm so sad about. my favourite groups, what's going on? I wish and pray that these groups be re-united again. or maybe i'm late about these video. go go go..STEPS, get together. for your FANS and ADMIRERs SAKE!! GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU (STEPS.)
It's made me think that there's a bit more anger there then I expected, still - Claire Sorry but what did Claire expect - Lee, Lisa and Faye to sweep what she and H did back in 2001 under the carpet
It seems odd to me that they can't get their heads around what happened. The way that it ended was how it was inevitably going to end. All bands split up and it's usually when things get bad. If things are not bad they don't split up. Five young people that didn't know each other beforehand thrown together into a high stress environment - of course tensions are going to arise. How could they not? When you have 5 singers and no musicians, everyone is competing to get the biggest singing spot. The best looking one with the best voice is always going to get more attention than the others. You could have predicted this happening on the day that they signed their contracts. Watch the David Essex films 'That'll be the Day' and 'Stardust' from 1973/4. This same scenario is played out exactly - 25 years before. Look at the story of the Bangles - same deal. The only difference is that in those cases there wasn't a dick head like 'H' involved.
Claire was definitely not to be trusted back then. She must've felt she was more talented than the other girls but then again, things were different back then, they were younger and more naive. Business and fame can obviously result in popstars becoming selfish and there's always one or two people in a group who want to go on to Solo success, such as Diana Ross. She was a nightmare in The Supremes but look where it got her. Global fame and notoriety! I LOVE all of Steps. I think their music is pure "cheese" but it's bloody good cheese and they can sing. I suppose Claire has the "best" voice, but I adore Lisa. She seems like the nicest girl in the group next to Faye. Lee is adorable. What you see is what you get. H is sweet. Faye is so bubbly and Claire has real stage charisma. I love their music both old and new.
for me i don't know if they really did settled everything. Claire and H haven't apologized yet for what they did... but it seems that everyone had moved on and they're all happy of what is happening to them now so i guess that's it then...
I agree. Now that the group has reunited, I wouldn't be surprised to see something similar happen again. While the others can sing, Claire's voice is the backbone to their music. If Claire had been successful on her own, I strongly suspect there would have been NO reunion of the original group. Steps would be a shell of itself without Claire. That being said, I've always liked Faye the most. She comes across as very professional, well grounded, and unafraid to say what she thinks (without being overbearing). This video is a prime example of that.
Where to watch the full video?.. I'm one of their biggest fan. Just want to know each of their side. It really breaks my heart after their split up.. :-(
Im the biggest Fan of STEPS. i was a kid when im singing and dancing their music. i guess they have big misunderstanding all throughout their career. and they should know that being on a group will eventually end on separate ways. they should kept that in MIND. they realized they don't have a manager nor career after the final concert because, i guess they don't have money anymore and lifestyle is going down for them.
After hearing most of their songs two days ago, here's what I think about Steps now. I feel like Claire and H are hogging the spotlight almost all the time, which upsets me. But I'm glad that Faye and Lisa managed to get their fair share in singing their parts every now and then. As for Lee, they did him real shady by not letting have any solo parts at all, except for songs like 5678, Say You'll Be Mine, Neon Blue, and A Hundred Years of Winter.
Well done Faye, Lisa and lee for holding them to account. Especially faye you handled this really well

It breaks my heart to see them like this. 😢 Hope these issues will be resolved and make their friendships stronger. 💗
RainyDayWitch I don’t feel that Claire was the least bit apologetic. At least H apologised and admitted to the others what he did was wrong.
Faye, Lisa and Lee are the nicest members and the best looking as well
It sounded like H was immature and fame got to his head a lot and of course he was hyperactive as well. What he said to Lee about him not singing was bang out of order. I think H has calmed down a lot lately and realised what he was like.
I cryied when Faye asked Clair did you really hate us. I can see Faye is really mad to what happened to the band.
DaNgEr88GiRL I think the whole situation had the biggest effect on Faye ❤️ breaks my hearts because I fee she’s the nicest and most genuine out of the group.
faye is so sincere
And I am so lucky to have been part of this journey since 1997 ever since I first saw 5678 on the music video channel and just following the journey as a steps fan and then eventually becoming a steps superfan due to my loyalty, dedication and standing by them for the last 21 years
Wow! Your comment made me cry because of how much sense it made. I couldn't agree more!
💔💓💓💓
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK .I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL.GOD BLESS YOU ALL🙏///.................
I liked Faye and lee they was the only 2 who came out of the hotel at night to talk to me and my friends in Manchester
i love how Lee is so chill XD
5:14 faye laughing at h for trying to make claire look bad is so funny
He came off looking the worst out of all of them in my opinion
@@ForzaTerra89 Absolutely, H showed no remorse whatsoever.
Thank you. This answers alot of questions of what went wrong more than a decade ago.
To be honest I wouldn't even join this meeting if I was Lee.
I'm glad that they had this opportunity to just express their pains and grudges about what had happened ten years ago. It's healthy to have a confrontation.
Currently, they are much healed and mature which makes me happy.
maria uldarico Also they said they would never ever split up again!
I mean... they were business partners as well & the way they split was downright unprofessional, whether or not they were close as friends.
Ten years later and they still weren't being honest with each other....no wonder they were doomed.
Uniting, not siding with management and putting fame and fortune ASIDE makes a
band a life long union with real life long relationships (not just a
public working facade).
Example of bands that united against management are:
New Kids on the Block
Back Street Boys
NSync
Hence till this day they remain as a band or life long friends.
putting this out there, Claire is indeed that voice that carried this group...it's always like this..it's mass appeal...but I'm glad they have matured from this and
the other girls were VERY catty towards Claire back then.....because she didn't drink and party, but stayed in at night....and very catty that Claire got more leads due to the better voice. I think I would've left as well!!!
Claire: If you look back at probably the issues that we had ten years ago and you think about them now, they are actually really silly
Faye: What were the issues?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love you all sending love from UK takecare xxxxx
They were young at the time of their success
They never think what will happen with out the group.
Lee is cool
I still Love them
The only Steps footage where H manage's to not smile or laugh :O
This was awkwardly brilliant to watch! 🙈😂
Good on you Faye speaking up x
I love you guys.....
Never give up on yourself many will never yourselves keep going doing amazing things stay strong stay safe sending love from UK takecare xxxxx
Nicola Platt I feel Claire has been very selfish and she probably thinks that because she has the best voice she can do whatever she wants
Like a family reunion with a lot of raw wounds still left to fix.
Or a divorce. lol
the steps really do seem a lot happier now
i grew up loving all of them as a band, ironically H and Claire where my least fav - then they go out as a duo.
I can almost feel the hurt coming through the screen.
This should be done in private. So they could honestly tell each other what they feel.
i wondered after all that have been said here in this table.. how did they end the conversation.. for us viewers.. its like everything is up in the air.. next thing we saw steps has a new album and tour around the country.. maybe all well annd ends well.. hope we also be part of that rresolution that you guys concocted before stepping into a tour
I love Faye
started this year hearing there music was obbsed with them the videos the have done i agree everybody who are fans of them whatever yes they said that stuff was gabage still fans do love them
This was so needed
Well claire was the strongest singer out of them all. Fair play to claire and her career shes doing so well. Best wishes for the future 💞
this is so heartbreaking to watch eventhough this is long ago.
Was devastated when steps split didn't like Claire and h for a long time but have fallen in love with them and steps again ❤
Faye ICONIC
Go Faye speak your mind ♥️♥
Claire is very Plastic.'' It's so unfair to Lisa, Faye and Lee.
It's made me think that there's a bit more anger there then I expected, still - Claire
Sorry but what did Claire expect - Lee, Lisa and Faye to sweep what she and H did back in 2001 under the carpet
this is the first time that i watch this..i dont know what to say..it broke my heart to see them like this..now i know why they disbanded 😞
liza and Faye are so beautiful
They are beautiful
@@PeterBerisha They certainly are
Lisa is b list at capital …27
I've always liked Faye and will always do. She's mature
Cant agree no more. H stands for hypocrite
The 3 have a good character for handling those 2......
Still difficult to watch this a second/third time 😢
Claire was definitely not to be trusted back then.
I wonder if H knows how much people hate him , he's such a smug so and so .
for me i don't know if they really did settled everything.
This video is a prime example of that.
can you upload the whole documentary please?
BOMBSHELL at 2:28!
I miss steps so much
H threw Claire under the bus, didn’t take any responsibility or try and back Claire up, he let her have to defend both them
Faye was just so brave! Whoa!
They must have both known these questions were going to come up, what did they expect
Where to watch the full video?.. I'm one of their biggest fan. Just want to know each of their side. It really breaks my heart after their split up.. :-(
Me too. I've been searching the internet where I can watch the full episodes but still can't find. 👲💔
It shows how selfish Claire and H were and are. I've hated them ever since and always hoped the other 3 went on to do better that them
Very mature attitude there. 🙄
What is this scene from? Was it part of a bigger documentary?
Steps Reunion
Im the biggest Fan of STEPS. i was a kid when im singing and dancing their music. i guess they have big misunderstanding all throughout their career. and they should know that being on a group will eventually end on separate ways. they should kept that in MIND. they realized they don't have a manager nor career after the final concert because, i guess they don't have money anymore and lifestyle is going down for them.
Not according to Backstreet Boys though.
great telly
After hearing most of their songs two days ago, here's what I think about Steps now. I feel like Claire and H are hogging the spotlight almost all the time, which upsets me. But I'm glad that Faye and Lisa managed to get their fair share in singing their parts every now and then. As for Lee, they did him real shady by not letting have any solo parts at all, except for songs like 5678, Say You'll Be Mine, Neon Blue, and A Hundred Years of Winter.
Did u start guys in this video in 2012 then i born in 2012 tho XD
