  • For in room graphs and my written take: www.subwoofer10...
    This a comparison between the SVS sub101.link/PB... and the sub101.link/PB... (affiliate links) (VV CLICK "SHOW MORE" VV)
    These 2 subwoofers are at the top of my list for several reasons. The PB-2000 was at the top of my list before I ever started this channel or became an SVS Affiliate, so that was no surprise. What was a surprise was liking the PB-1000 so much. I did not expect the sub 30 hertz performance to be so good, but that is it's happy place, as evidenced by the graphs on the webpage linked above.
    The point of the video is that the PB-1000's are not some consolation prize. Yes, the PB-2000's better fit my personal ideal of what makes an excellent subwoofer, but dual PB-1000's confidently get the job done as well.
    I might be missing 2-4 hertz depending on how you look at it (5-7 if you can hear down to 14 hertz), and they may not have the output to satisfy those who listen at truly insane, eardrum obliterating levels (which makes no sense to me), but all in all the PB-1000's are solid performers deserving respect.
    For "sane" enthusiasts, the PB-1000's make a lot of sense if dual PB-2000's are beyond budgetary grasp. As always, duals, duals duals! 3, 4, 6? Sure, whatever floats your boat, but duals at a minimum.
    **Gear and Links**
    Subwoofers should reproduce quality sound with authority throughout the humanly audible bass spectrum (20-100 hertz). Most ported subwoofers do not.

    I went with a pair of the PB-1000 units, due to the physical size, they are perfect for my room, the PB-2000 are just overwhelming in regards to size. Sound, not having heard the PB-2000, I am very happy with the PB-1000 subs, I have no desire to upgrade. The one thing I did do, that honestly made a difference in sound, was installing the isolation feet from SVS on both of my PB subs. Those feet really brought the subs alive, not that they were dead, but those feet... After installing the iso feet, I thought I was listening to something much larger, there was that much of a difference. Those SVS iso feet are something all of you should consider.

    Great video! The only wish I have for the Pb 2000 is that it would come in a gloss piano black. That would match my speakers, although it won't stop me from purchasing a pair.

      I have to say I really prefer the oak, but I have dogs and the dust can get out of hand. But yes, the option for piano would be nice. You'd have to go to the PB-12 plus to get piano.

      I think you would just use the speaker level inputs (I didn't see subwoofer output on that amp). Chat with SVS bit.ly/SVSsupport (affiliate link) to be sure. I'm not sure the best way to run 2 subs in that scenario, but the PB-1000 should absolutely work.

      +XSive2 I really appreciate that, let me know what you think of them! I'm staring at dual PB-16 Ultras, and while they bring a level of performance that I've never experienced before, I still love what the PB-2000s can do. They're still my favorite subwoofer in terms of bang for the buck. I'm about to return the PB-2000's to SVS, and I'm sad to see them go. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have!

    • @XSive2

      I'm thinking PB200 twins is overkill as it is now. I can't imagine two PB16's.
      I've been researching for a couple months now, forums, reviews, SVS Sound and of course Subwoofer101. You sound like you really enjoy your HT setup. My Klipsch 12's hit hard but seem a little one-note down low. Right now, I'm pretty confident the PB2000's will give some clarity. I'll let you know...

      Update: Placed order for twin PB-2000's on May 22, 2017. Website states they ship next business day. Called May 24, 2017 to check order status, was informed at this point they were out of stock and may be back in June. In short...I cancelled order. Guess it wasn't meant to be.

    Yes very true I'm now sad about talking family & friends into Bose. I've just finished building my new house 1 year ago & I had it all pre wired for Bose everywhere (as their saying goes) V35 in home theatre, 791's in living & 191's in the outdoor area. What really got me from the start 15 yrs ago was the small speakers & didn't have to point the remote at the system haha. I'll be removing the V35 & selling It asap & upgrading to SVS. I am in Australia so I will check to see who sells SVS here. CheeRS

    Im interested in getting a louder sub to replace my old velodyne cht 8 and wanted to go with svs for my bedroom. Do you really think the pb2000 pro is alot better than the pb1000 pro? They look like the same woofer to me. I appreciate your input. Thanks

  • @joeytruelove
    @joeytruelove 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great input on the difference between ported and sealed, but there are a few other factors that enter into it. With a sealed sub, the drop (like you said) is more gradual meaning the extension is actually deeper than a ported sub. With a ported sub it reaches farther into the lows before it drops and at a higher rate, typically rolling off before a sealed sub has run out of usable frequency content.
    The ported sub achieves this by acoustically boosting the sound at its tuned frequency. In a sense this works much like room-gain but within the sub, which is why this boost is bound to sound more diffuse ("fluffy") and fatiguing.
    Adding room-gain to a sealed sub would typically assist it w. maintaining a flat response farther down, it lifting the lowest frequencies exponantially. But w. a ported sub it's more likely to actually make it peaky at around the tuning frequency because of this lift, particularly in the case w. the PB 2000s being louder at the very lows, prior to their roll-off.
    Did you corner-load those SB2000s any as I would expect them to benefit from such placement? Or it could be that simple that your room reacts better to the ported subs or vice versa.
    I've been messing with ported designs for a few years now, but I've reached the point that the next step is bound to be the sealed principle. I too am of a slightly autistic disposition but wanted to like the ported principle it supposedly being superior for watching movies. But I've suspected all along that I'm more of a sealed guy at heart.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you commented on the wrong video. =) What kind of ported subs have you been using? The subs on "The List" aren't exactly typical, and factory DSP helps shape the response for ported subs. Ported subs are hard to get "right" as far as what I consider to be right.
      I expected to be a sealed convert, but the slight ear sensitivity is what put the brakes on that. I will try them again though I'm sure, I could have missed something. I did not corner load them due to room configuration. To do so properly (a sub in each corner) would mean using an SB-2000 as a doorstop, and that was a nonstarter.
      For sure, ported subs have been the most comfortable to me. It may not be the ported configuration itself, but the executions you've experienced so far. The vast majority of ported subs are disappointing, unfortunately. The PB-2000's, in contrast, are anything but "fluffy". Very well controlled and tight, even though they are ported.

    • @joeytruelove
      @joeytruelove 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I might have confused the vids but I was purely speaking from a scientific standpoint and anechoic measurements. I believe SVS take the advantage of DSP for basically all their subs in keeping the response as neutral as possible. Then in the pursuit of extension the roll-off points and steepness of roll-off is really what it is regardless. Otherwise the DSP would really defeat the purpose of going ported in the first place.
      We're here talking from an all-things-equal perspective obviously.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, all of their subs are DSP controlled. It makes a huge difference, and I consider DSP to be a necessity to control subs. To your point, the SB-2000's did drop to 11 hertz in room, while the PB-2000's got down to 14 hertz. The weird part is that the ported subs "sounded" deeper. Both subs went lower than I could hear, but down towards the lower limits of my hearing, the ported had more output. So while the sealed went deeper, the ported sounded deeper.
      You are right, this is specific to these subs, and in many other situations this comparison might not be the same. With 2 non DSP controlled subs, one sealed and one ported (everything else equal), the sealed may very well sound deeper because the ported will likely run out of breath as it goes under 30-40 hertz.

    A have a fairly large room (18' x 22'), and with a good recording, my PB2000 always sufficient volume. I also have a 10" Velodyne with a 12" passive radiator. The SVS is the better of the two by far. Although, I do believe another PB2000, or maybe even a PB4000, will better fill the room. Some say match subs are better. But with the adjustability of the 4000 series, the differences may acoustically fit the room better.

    • @Subwoofer101

    Is going from dual PB-1000 to PB-2000 pro (2400$) a huge difference? Or spend the extra 1400$ for PB-3000 (3900$) ? Talking about duals and the funds are CDN. Room is 16x16x8 so medium size the 1000 are ok but they are use to their max capacity I'm thinking the new 2000 pro would be more than enough but I'm still wondering, those 3000 are a massive upgrade but they have a massive price tag and I'm thinking they would be overkill for my space. I've also been thinking of keeping the Dual 1000 and go with 2 2000's for a nice 4 sub setup this would greatly improve bass and I would have zero dips once all corrected.
    This last option is what makes the most sense besides I wouldn't be getting much for the Dual 1000 on the used market because of the new 1000 pro making the regular ones lose a ton of value.

      SVS knows what they're doing, don't they? At some point you'll want to add a second one, and that will get rid of your swiss cheese bass (a problem with all single subwoofers): th-cam.com/video/865RhwRLUM0/w-d-xo.html

      The subs I used was two Rufo 18" tuned down to 18Hz, similar build as the JBL Cinema subs. Mid/top range was Electro-Voice 15" + horns and they sounded amazing even on low volume.

I currently have the really nice BIC f12 sub and I love it for my space, but I'm missing the tight thump of a 10" sub when I'm listening to music, so I ordered an SVS PB1000 to pair with the f12. I'm not sure how they will sound together, but that's why I'm experimenting! :)
    Any thoughts on pairing a 10" with a 12"? I know most audiophiles will say it'll sound like garbage since they aren't the same brand, but I'll let my ears decide that.

      I'm more inclined to have the subs be identical or really close, It should sound better than the single sub you have now, but not as good as 2 PB-1000's. The problem you will encounter is different response curves, and the SVS has a DSP, which will give you a slight delay. If you have an AVR that sets the distances for each sub independently, you'll notice a difference in distances. The SVS should register as 2 feet further away than it actually is after room correction (assuming you have room correction like Audyssey). For sure, another PB-1000 at some point will "clean up" the sound. I think the question of 10" vs 12" is less of an issue than the dramatic difference in response curves.
      You don't really lose anything, but the response curve will change how you hear the music:

      And like I said, I'll experiment and see how I like this setup, and if one sub works better for me than the other, I may end up selling one and buying another matching whichever I decide to keep.

      Just circling back around on this in case you were curious. I've decided to keep both the BIC F12 and SVS PB1000. The BIC is placed in the front left corner of the room, filling the main space with beautiful bass, and the SVS is placed behind our leather reclining love seat aiming at the back of the seats, making our seating rumble like crazy and filling the back of the room.
      I don't notice any difference in response times or anything like that. A discerning ear may hear a difference, but to me there's no disconnect between the sounds. I'm loving the setup! Really feeling the rumble while hearing it is a pretty wonderful thing. It's great for music too since I now feel the thump of the kick pedal in the seat. Pretty cool stuff!

    Hey Subwoofer 101 love the channel. I have a 20 x 14 x 8 room. Do you think the dual pb1000s will be excellent for my room size? Im coming from a single DEF Tech Supercube 4000.

      @Subwoofer101  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yeah, I think dual PB-1000's would fill up your room nicely. My room is basically 24x24, and I was pleased with how well it filled up the room.

      I'm hoping I can feel the ground shake with the 1000s. An example...watching war of the worlds and I heard someone did a review of the 2000s sounding like the ground was coming up. My supercube 4000 feels like i cant feel much

      Matt Nakata The PB-2000's will do it better, but yes the PB-1000's gave me that sensation. I first felt it on "The Haunting" (with Catherine Zeta-Jones). Changed the way I saw that movie!

      That is roughly the size of my room, and I have a pair of the PB-1000 subs, they rattle the cupboards in the kitchen. Get the isolation feet, they really did make a huge difference in performance.

    Good vid :) I'd be interested to see you review / compare the PC2000's at some point. Having a couple of downward firing subs myself it will be interesting to see how they differ from the PB2000's. I would have thought given they are both a 12" model with the same amplifier and port that they should be very similarly sounding. Plus, according to the "significant other", they do have a higher WAF / SAF just because they don't look like a great big sub at first glance!

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are next! Looking forward to it. I think for the reasons you state, they would be the best bet for mixed use rooms to go 4 subs (for those who want to) because they might be able to pass as end tables. Maybe...

    Hi! If you cover the PB1000's port, would it be possible to tighten the response where it gets near or similar to the SB counterpart? Any fear of damage in this scenario? Thanks and keep on with the amazing videos! Really helps!

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Reggie Mina For sure, do NOT plug the PB-1000 port, it can damage it. Only subs that are designed to be plugged should be plugged. The PB-1000 was not designed to be plugged. I understand the train of thought though.
      Glad you like the channel!

    Have you ever used any mini dsp product to attain better bass response ?

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not yet, embarrassingly enough. Audyssey does pretty well, but I will explore using something like a Mini DSP 2x4 in the future. I ordered the Umik-1 over a year ago, with plans to order the 2x4 if I needed to sculpt the bass more. Haven't really felt the need, fortunately, but I should be more familiar with it.

    How is the port noise on the PB1000 vs PB2000?

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nonexistent as far as I could tell, even when pushed. A subwoofer that produced audible port noise would be a mortal sin for SVS. Nor would it make it on "The List": www.subwoofer101.com/best-subwoofers/
      I'm not saying it's impossible to generate some port noise out of an SVS subwoofer, I'm just saying it would be a rare occurrence if you could get them to misbehave like that. Very well behaved, and a clear departure from the norm.

      thankx for fast reply, mabey you can help me unfortunately in Canada price are much higher i was thinking about getting the pb100 for 700$ cad, Or i can get the Paradigm Monitor SUB12 for 787$ cad, i was wondering what would be the best pick? i have right now fluance db12 subwoofer and it dont sound really good it clap when i played music abit louder.... main user if for watching movie and some music but not intended to push it real hard because i have neighbor up,, but i want something quality that it low for watching 4k bluray,,, i was told svs is the way to go... what do you think? thankx alot

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say SVS is the way to go. Especially if you like movies I would go with a ported sub like the PB-1000. Sealed are not as efficient and you don't get as much output, and ported Subs like the PB 1000 have a much deeper presentation.
      Being an apartment, I know this will sound crazy, but I would eventually get a second PB 1000 to run duals. I actually think that duals somehow make it to where there is less bleed over to neighboring buildings. Aside from that, it sounds a lot better to run duals.
      It's not for the increased output, though that is a side effect, it's to be able to hear all of the bass and get fewer cancellations and dead spots.
      An apartment, you might want to get your subwoofer level on your AVR closer to 0 rather than in the negative. I run -11.5 and it gives great Dynamics, but also the most bleed over.
      If you run the subwoofer level at 0 or close to it and adjust the subwoofers accordingly, they shouldn't bleed over as much. The bass will still be just as deep it just won't be as dynamic.

      great thank you very much, yes i had 2 sub before 2 db12 12 inch it blend much more but i had to remove one because i just bouth 2 big tower speaker very big and the 2 sub dint fint in the place, 2 db12 subwoofer cost the same as 1 pb1000 so im sure i will notice an improovement, the paradigm sub dosent go very low.. iv been watching your channel and i think i will start with 1 pb1000 to see i never had luck with subwoofer because i allways buys midrange quality but in canada the price is ridiculous comare to us, i will let you know thanks again :)

      ok kool, thank you.. another question: I like listening to rap/hip-hop, dubstep/trap, bass music but then also metal/ alternative, rock.... am I gonna miss the (BOOM) with the pb2000 since they are flat and don't peak around that range? BTW awesome channel, I think I've watched almost every video lol.... and also ima be rough on What ever subs I decide to get, I like it loud (current system: Klipsch RF7'S and an old I mean old DCM sub lol.... but I just bought Klipsch RB81-II trying to shrink a lil but still want loud but I need some bass to make up for it...(any thoughts would be appreciated) tnx

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the PB-2000's will serve you well. The response will be flatter, giving you more depth but still plenty of mid bass. For some songs this may be an adjustment, but for other songs it will be an awakening. You can check out my playlists on Spotify and on this channel. E-40 and Wiz have deep stuff, and it's awesome on these subs. "On My Level" just disappears on regular subs, but comes to life on these subs. Travis Scott "Antidote" along with Big Sean "IDFWU" are others. We really got into rap a lot more since I got into good subs, it just wasn't fun with basic/breathless subs. Now it's a LOT of fun!
      The PB-2000's should handle your abuse, but if you need to use their upgrade program, you have a year to do it, and they give you FULL retail credit. It's the only time they ask you to pay for shipping. It's also important to note that the 5 year warranty covers the amp too, and amps are the most common failure in any sub. bit.ly/SVSBillofRights (affiliate link)

    I'm not at all confident this guy knows what he is doing or talking about. First off - putting stuff *between* your primary speakers compromises the sound. No experienced audiophile would do that.
    Also, it's not true that a single subwoofer can't be set up well with a little knowledge and patience. I think there's a good chance this video is mostly wrong - CAVEAT EMPTOR !!
