2019 Mercedes AMG CLS 53: The most beautiful Hybrid in the world! FIRST DRIVE REVIEW

  • For the first time ever on the show, MotoMan drives the Mercedes CLS. However, he starts with a Mercedes CLS Coupe that is fitted with the AMG ‘53’ series 429 HP Turbo mild hybrid engine. It worked well in the heavier Mercedes AMG E53 Convertible but he spends more time in a rainy California to drive the Mercedes CLS53 equipped with the 48V electrical system to learn how it works in both a sedan and a somewhat lighter car. He also presents an unusual corollary to this 53 technology used in an application other than a Mercedes AMG . . .

I own a second generation after the facelift and I have to say, it's by far the most beautiful CLS generation.

It's the 2nd generation for me. As much as I love this new design I feel like it's too similar at the front to the W177 A-Class whereas the second generation CLS looked like nothing within the Mercedes range

I purchased the CLS 53 4 weeks ago and absolutely love it! And I agree, the enhanced exhaust system is the best option out there. To answer your question, I use the paddles all the time.

Edition 1 CLS 53 has a few more extras than the standard CLS 53 AMG all included in the price and in my opinion would be the one to get. I had generation 1 2010 CLS 350 CDi, one of the very best cars I owned and the new CLS 53 AMG is VERY desirable in my humble opinion. By the way, I love your channel and I tell all my friends over here in the UK who are very used to Clarkson, Hammond and May on Top Gear and now Grand Tour, to watch you channel because in my opinion, you stand out from the crowd of car reviewers. You deserve every success, keep making great shows! Oh yes, one more thing, like you I am a MASSIVE Porsche fan, and always have been having been lucky enough to have first visited their Stuttgart factory back in 1982 as a kid. Also, Lotus means "Loads of Trouble, Usually Serious", but you probably knew that.

i recently purchased one of these (2019) and I love it, I also own a 2011 C63 with that amazing V8 and I love that too, it is hard to beat the V8 sound , but this car looks and drives way better , when in sport + and on the gears for a V6 it does sound incredible. I have recently tuned the CLs and it is even more impressive. It is a quiet rocket ship. I am going to be selling the C63 this coming spring , having a hard time letting it go. If anyone is on the fence about this not truly being a AMG , go and test drive one.

The second generation CLS was truly beautiful, but this third gen is the best looking in my opinion. I do, however, believe that the current CLS is being overshadowed by the new AMG GT 4 door coupe. And since the top variant of the CLS is 53 AMG, and not 63 AMG, its appeal has somewhat diminished in a lot of peoples minds.

Spot on that this drivetrain is the type of electrification that makes a ton of sense and one that I’m interested in owning. I’ve never been interested in hybrids or electric cars for my dollars. More coverage of the benefits of this system would be appreciated. Can I drive short distances on battery power? Can I heat or cool the car remotely without the engine cutting on?

Fantastic review. Humour and wisdom. I have just bought a brand new AMG CLS 53 in Chiang Mai, Thailand . I have owned it for 3 months and still do not fully understand the hybrid system. For sure, the BANGKOK dealership have less idea than me. I just wish I could understand all your cleaver words as I remain confused on what the 21 HP hybrid does!! But hugely grateful for trying to explain it to an idiot like me!! Best review on TH-cam. Mine cost a whopping $174,000 due to import taxes in Thailand. Worth every Thai bhat. P.S. Thai MB's in Thailand have a far less of a spec than European and N A equivalents. No track mode...... :(

I realize I'm talking about the E53 during a CLS video as well, but if someone told me that a 2+2 Grand Tourer, as a pillarless hardtop, with a 3L inline-6 (God's Engine) and a classically beautiful shape would be available new, in my lifetime, I'd said you were crazy. Those cars died out in the 70's. The electrification is brilliant. As for the price of these new E-based AMG's, they're WAY overpriced. I will get one in a few years when they're in the $40-$60 range.

SUPER smooth transition. Yes, I am a bit biased about the tech in this system but have to say it was one of the best transitions I have experienced.

Can't really speak to that . . . but if you are referring to 'softer' ride, they are not appreciably different. Perhaps a Lexus or an S Class.

Beautiful car, but pricey, which explains why it's beautiful. I like the AMG GT53/63 better. "The Ugly": I have to disagree. The analog gauges in the base version of this class of MB looks terrible. This car has to have tech in the price / class it competes in. Elegant tech has become one of the defining traits of luxury cars these days. And MB-Tex: it's a sustainable material that matches the sustainability of electrification. Customers are starting to expect sustainable options. Totally agree on the interior color. Safe and unimaginative. Totally undermines the daring beauty of the exterior.

Is amazing how MB can reinvent themselves in the design department. Their designs were extensively copied by Lexus and other manufacturers and, suddenly, they come up with a very distinctive, balanced and beautiful car, a one that will look great 30 years from now.
And congrats to you for having the cojones of bringing the truth about digital gauges. I know they look modern and all but do I really need so much info, colors, forms, etc?? For me, that’s design laziness.
