Rewatching this whole show many years later from when I first watched it as a kid, I view Cat completely different now. I used to think that she behaved like a child just for comedic relief during the show’s more intense moments, but now I realize that there may have actually been some incredibly dark implications with her character that not many of us initially picked up on. My theory is that Cat actually isn’t just some air-headed girl, I think she’s a lot smarter than she lets on. If you’ve payed attention to any time she references her family (mainly her brother and father), you can clearly tell that she lives in a very dysfunctional household. Her father tells her to be quiet very frequently. It seems to me that she’s been somewhat neglected during most of her childhood, which is why she behaves much younger than she really is. In the episode where Beck and Jade are viciously arguing with each other before breaking up, Cat asks if she can leave before getting dragged back into their argument by Jade, being forced to listen to them shout at each other. Throughout their argument, you can see Cat having a panic attack, closing her eyes and covering her ears while repeating “I’m under my bed” to herself over and over until she faints. With that little detail right there, it’s safe to assume that her parents probably fight a lot, and she hides under her bed to find her ‘happy place’ so she doesn’t have to hear to her parents fighting. Everyone knows that most children of parents who fight a lot end up severely damaged later on in life. I don’t think Cat is dumb at all. I believe that she acts like a child as a way to cope with her problems at home, which she does so so much that it often leads her to get manipulated and taken advantage of by Tori and the rest of the gang. idk maybe I’m looking into this way too deeply, but rewatching Victorious makes me feel really bad for Cat..
The way Ariana naturally read her character was so much better than how they wanted her character to change in later seasons. They made her stop acting like a funny and ditzy teenager and had her act like a five year old.
