This movie is waay deeper than you'd initially think.
Tom was projecting an idea onto Summer, thay she'd be his perfect manic pixie dream girl, when she clearly states in the beginning that she doesn't want commitment. And when his idealistic version of her doesn't pan out he gets bitter.
We shouldn't put people on an idealistic pedestal and then get disappointed when our fantasies don't play out, because then *you aren't in love with them, you are in love with the IDEA of them.*
That's the whole point of the movie.

I think one of the hardest things is loving someone and knowing that they will never feel the same. It kind of ends up with you trying to be their best friend and king sure that they’re happy even if it’s with another guy/girl. And even though it hurts deep down you can be happy to know they they are happy. It sucks.
At first we hated summer because we see little bit of ourselves in Tom. We all have fall in love with the idea of a person who is not going to love us back.
Honestly she was there for me when shit really hit the fan, I was hurting damn near everyday. But then I’d just get a glimpse of her gorgeous hazel eyes she made me feel like I was only person in the room, like I was worth something. I told her everything, and it was almost every conversation was sad, she noticed that. She eventually lost interest. It’s been almost 8 months, and every time I see her I miss her more and more. No girl I’ve talked to after even compares and the one thing that still get me, was the beautiful hazel eyes.

Theres so much impact put into this movie and this song shows it completely in the way it is slightly upbeat but sad in the way the singer expresses his emotions
I love this movie. It's such a realistic depiction of real life failed relationships. I could connect and relate to both summer and tom at certain moments in the movie.

I’ve watched 500 days like about 7 times already and each time I watch I realize that Tom is in the wrong and not summer. She tells him early on in the beginning that she doesn’t want anything serious but Tom keeps pushing for a relationship and in real life that’s a no no. You’re in charge of your own happiness :) leaving someone is okay. In the end character development for everyone.
while i totally agree with you, i think the beauty of this movies comes from both people's wrong. Like Tom was completely wrong for having this idea of her and putting her in such a high pedestal, she doesn't deserve that perssure, no one does. But she also messed up in some parts. As an example, after she saw how much of a hopeless romantic Tom really was, she still decided to stay because it also benefited her. Now while Tom is wrong, she should've left him after she realised that imo. And the end was obviously also pretty indecent from her. Inviting him to a party, not clarifying that it's a engagement party. I get that she didn't wanna hurt him, but still. I think the issue is way too complex to just blame it on one or the other. And that's why this movie is so beautiful.

It genuinely sucks when you are still in love with your best friend who really changed you and showed you real love while it lasted, me and him promised each other we will always be best friends no matter what even if the vibe isn’t the same anymore. I had a best friend. We were super close. Told each other everything. I had two boyfriends in the time that it took him to tell me how he actually felt about me. I was heartbroken. I felt guilty for making him feel that way, because I saw us as nothing more than friends. We worked as friends.

@@alixwilde well to be honest summer never really "loved" tom to begin with. She wanted to keep the relationship platonic, to stay casual. She stated exactly what she wanted and tom didnt listen, because his head was in the clouds thinking about how perfect she was for him.
