    I've been watching your channel for a while Flankster and while you have some great points I think some are not quite there.
    I started collecting statues last year and I 100% agree on presence, detail and quality. However as a Hot Toys collector they have come a very long way. Back in the day when that Loki was made compared to today is a night and day difference.
    Art is art at the end of the day. I collect both now and like them for different reasons. I enjoy posing and building a display with a full line of characters and hot toys do allow for this. With JND and Queen / InArt making 1/6 scale figures in the near future I think a lot of statue folks will double dip especially if they run out of space!
    Interesting video nevertheless

      @Flankster117 If presence and detail are what you're going for you need to really get into this new statue-collecting scene. 3x Bust and full-body statues. A 6-foot tall actor would be an 18-foot-tall statue! Undeniably huge presence and the pores on the face are like the pock-marked surface of the moon! Haha just kidding. To each his own honestly and I'm surprised at your seemingly elitist take on any other alternate form of collecting of anything really. Not just hot toys, but I would have imagined that you of all people would understand the collecting community at large and how everything, no matter how big or small, can have a "presence" in a collection. Imagine someone having a $5 million star wars collection and in their video, they walk over to a 3-inch plastic Luke skywalker figure from 1977 and say "We bumped into Mark Hamill at a nearby store during the premiere of A New Hope and he picked it off the shelf and bought it for me when I was 10 years old." Everything can have a "presence" and for your to have such feelings on the matter and to put down collections of any sort to any degree I must wonder is this just a click-bait video to get people worked up and commenting and feeding the algorithm or rather more likely that you must just simply "search your feelings young padawan."

    Let’s just say this (and it might be a little biting) Imo if u have way to many statues there is no way u can appreciate them all(no matter how u slice it) ,
    so if u want to mass collect something and not have it look like a
    hoarder I think hot toys are awesome. Statues should be centerpieces, displays should made around single statues imo and should not be MADE up of statues. My favorite collections are the ones with 4-6 absolutely incredible statues that decorate an office, living room, theater, or man cave with highly detailed and collectible figures on the shelves. I never want a room to have an entire purpose for “just toys”, I want it to be able to be an relaxing environment for hanging out and have it be a place to enjoy the films and games the characters we collect come from. Everything in your room shouldn’t be 30+ in. Tall.

  • @phoenyx9201
    @phoenyx9201 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    I completely disagree, firstly you can't even begin to compare a $300 hot toys figure with a $2,000 statue let alone a $4,000 bust. They are both for different types of collectors and arguing one is better than the other is like comparing a Bugatii to a Tesla, obviously we know what is going to win. Hot Toys have tons of advantages over statues, especially newer figures, that Loki is not nearly as good as what they are releasing now. I even think the quality of Hot Toys can sometimes be better than some statues I've had, almost every single Iron Man is actual metal and has significant weigh to it and a lot of sculpts can be more detailed than even the highest end polystone statue. Also selling or boxing up Hot Toys is so easy it makes me never want even considering storing or selling off a statue. I've also had some statues feel a bit boring after owning them for a while, with Hot Toys there is so much you can change with different poses and accessories.

    Hey man,
    I want to start by saying I watch your channel all the time, really enjoy it and think you’re a great collector. I myself collect a mix of 1/6, 1/4, 1/3 1/2 & 1:1 statues and while someone like yourself and myself can afford to get these larger statues, it may not be in everyone’s wheelhouse and/or budget, and to sort of crap on them, I mean, imagine if you’re at home right now watching this, and you’re a big Flankster fan right, and now this guy that you watch and look up to etc, is now crapping all over hot toys figures, meanwhile, your entire collection is all hot toys, and again, it could be for a number of reasons, space/budget/both, and now you’re thinking “wow, I thought I had a cool collection but I guess it sucks…” it’s kind of like if you drove a Lamborghini, and you made a video and were like, I just gotta say, Mercedes, BMW, Audi, man these cars all suck, I mean if you’re not driving a Lamborghini than you just suck. I tell my kids everyday that we are blessed, and at any moment it could all go away, and if it did, and I was only able to collect Iron Studios 1/10 scale figures to start, I would, because if that was the best I could do at the time, then it is what it is… again, no disrespect, just keeping it it real. And I’m probably not the only one either thinking and/or commenting on this…

    That's an opinion. Here's another: The only difference between your "collection" and hoarding is square footage. You're obsessed with the dopamine hit that comes with buying and opening cardboard boxes. Hot Toys or not, your collection is an eye sore; you've created wallpaper collage by lining all of the walls with visual noise. Your collection would be more impressive if you sold 90% of it and focused on actually displaying them in a more interesting way than placing them on garage shelves. A premium product sitting on a utility shelf. "Looks like absolute garbage. I hate it."

I like the odd statue here and there to add to the collection, but I am sticking to just the one room. I find it hard to believe you've seen Hot Toys made in the last couple years, unbelievable sculpts with sometimes perfect likeness and full on die cast iron man. I also think 1/6th has a bright future with InArt, honestly their Joker figure that just came out looks better than that Prime 1 and the sculpt comes VERY close to your joker bust which is saying something considering the bust costs like 4 times the price. Shouldn't really even compare them in general but I love the quality of Hot Toys plus the unique display options I have with them, you just straight up can't get racing suit Tony Stark back to back with a diecast Mark 5 with the suitup suitcase fully opened and detailed in statue form, and even if you could it would take up too much space and be miserable in terms of shipping costs, not to mention how fragile statues are.

  • @Centrocal
    @Centrocal ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Statues bore me. I need articulation. When people say they enjoy statues, HOW do you enjoy them? Just looking at them? Thats not enough to hold my attention. When I look at figures, I pick them up, I pose them, I switch accessories, I rearrange them, Photograph them. Theres way more options than a statue.
    I like the mixed media of a figure. The fabric costume, real metal parts, multiple layers of clothing. I like knowing a soldier is wearing dog tags, even though you can't see them. I love all the moving panels on the Hot Toys Mark 5 Iron Man. Or the LIM Toys Arthur having individual bullets in his belt, and shot gun shells in his bandolier. You can pose him loading bullets into his revolver, which opens up and has a rotating barrel. I love all the tiny details in a figure, like every page in Arthur's journal being filled out.
    Hot Toys paint has always been phenomenal. Its one area 3rd parties can't touch them on. But I've seen some real horror story paint jobs on statues. Sideshow statues in particular. They can be very sloppy
    I can appreciate something like a model kit. Something you put together with your hands, paint and work on. Theres an experience with that. But with a statue, you open the box, put it on your shelf, the end. Its just boring.
    Another thing I don't like about statues is, the statue is in the pose that the artist selected. They chose how they wanted it to be posed. I have no involvement. Its their vision, not mine. It feels like it belongs more to the artist than it does to me. Its what they wanted, their ideas. Its not personal to me, I don't have any attachment to it.

      @Centrocal ปีที่แล้ว

      One advantage Statues have is scale. Your not gonna get a 1/3 scale figure. I also like when statues have multiple characters, so they can recreate a specific scene or event. I do like the large diorama pieces with all the characters together, like the X-Men fighting the Sentinels. And its cool when theres 360 degrees of details that go around the sculpture, so you can display the front or back.

    Those MCU 1/6 are old af dude, things evolve, the stuff InArt does is insane. Their Heath Ledger likeness is miles better than the P1 1/3, at half the scale. Same for Aragorn, so much better than P1. I'd never buy it though, too small and not into figures. I only "tolerate" 1/6 with LOTR statues, pretty sure that's because I got into statues with the Weta/Sideshow line back in the day, so I've gotten used to 1/6 for this particular universe and I like the simplicity of the Weta ones. I am not a statues 1/3 or above or 1/1 bust collector due to space restrictions, nevertheless I follow your channel with great interest. I credit you with some points like visible joints and that they are quite expensive for what you get. Indeed, most of the bases are a crap hexagon or rectangle. Each figure should have a proper base. Regarding the portraits, it is obvious that you can´t have the same detail on a 1/6th as on a 1/3rd but sometimes less is more. Furthermore, I would say, it is way more difficult to produce a good portrait in 1/6th and a perfect one in 1/3rd. Art shouldn´t be bought in square meters, or volume or weight ;-D
    On the other hand there are points I am not prone to grant you. If a collector likes to have his figures 200 figures in museum pose, well, that is his/her decision (and money). Many collectors like to repose them from time to time and getting a proper pose is a challenge in it self and part of the game. They don´t "play with dolls", they perform some creative and artistic activities.
    In any case, collect what you like (c) Jeddah Patrol.

    I started collecting with 1/6 Hot Toys then I got into statues and busts. I can’t say Hot Toys are garbage, they are respectable collectibles and I understand why many people choose them instead of statues. You mentioned most of the reasons. Think at Funko Pops also, we’re just talking about different targets. The only thing I can say is that I would never come back to Hot Toys. Once you buy a P1 or JND or Queen’s 1/3 piece you might loose all your interest for 1/6. For me it has been physiological. That might not happen if you get a 1:1 bust. I mean busts hadn’t affected my love for 1/3 even if I think they’re the Non Plus Ultra if you’re looking for hyperreal movies (human like) collectibles, together with JNDs (just a tiny step below maybe). It all depends on what you’re looking for.

    Sounds more like you are just not the target audience for hot toys. To say they suck simply because you prefer statues with no seams is a bit too simple-minded. Hot toys collectors have different needs, mainly displayed in the detolf ikea cabinets, so it is preferable to have the bases small rather than big diorama style. Most hot toys collectors hate the bigger bases. Statues are impressive and amazing imho, but the price and size they take is cost prohibitive, especially those in europe who don't have easy retailing having to deal with custom fees. Saying Hot toys is not for you is fine, but saying they are crap because you prefer statues is just as much crap.

I just wanted to say as someone who primarily has collected hot toys for the last year I respect your opinion and I feel there are some valid points made about how nice statues are but I don't think its a zero sum game. There are valid reasons to not collect statues whether It be cost, space available or honestly just idk just not wanting one. I think we've lost the point that at the end of the day whether its hot toys, statues, comics etc these are essentially decorations for our man caves. It's not like sports teams and frankly its kinda silly to turn It into that. The presence of one really cool collectible doesn't instantly make another garbage. It's just different. I think we all just need to focus on what connects us all in a community where (lets call a spade a spade) we're all man children. If you think collecting Statues makes you any less of a man child just cause they cannot articulate then you're just lying to yourself. As a hot toys collector honestly I've been drawn to channels by statue collectors (ie gem mint) even though I don't have any just because of their passion for what they collect. I think its more effective than someone telling me my taste in collecting is trash therefore I should collect statues. Might I suggest a more even keel approach. You are more likely to entice people to get into statues just by sharing your passion for them than taking a jab. Just a thought. Im sure this will get you views though. If that was the real goal well then good job.

    I'm not really into statues because more often than not I don't like their pose, and 1/3 scale is too big for me, so I'm usually only drawn to environments.

    I don't have a lot of room since I collect full size 80s arcade games and I'm also not a hardcore figure collector so a handful of Hot Toys on a shelf is good for me but I admire your level of collecting. That life size Heath Ledger Joker in the corner is probably my favorite piece that I see in your collection....looks downright badass.

    Lol your collection is same as hottoys collectors who just stand them up side by side your collection looks very crowded and they stick so close together if you really want to make your collection look better you need a really big space..that's why most of the time bust only looks good when you visit a museum but when you put very close to others it looks very cluttered aside from your scale collection is very confusing bust and different scale mixture it looks more like a ware house.

    Bruh you're comparing figures with statues = = Fine so...
    Size: It's harder to get the likeness right on a smaller scale yet the likeness on most Hottoys sculpts knock your smaller statues' likeness out of the park. Presence sure, I can't imagine having a half-scale "figure" anyway. I do see how you seem to like everything big and to you big means all of presence.
    Material Plastic: You can literally see the skin texture by the paint app on the HT sculpts but if you prefer the flat 2D polystone face sure. But when you said the Hawkeye is just as good... I mean bruh.. You said plastic sucks but PVC (plastic) looks great because they're painted like polystone holy shit so what you're saying is the paint app then.
    JND, Prime one etc vs Hottoys: Look at their price difference brother. And when were they release those HT joker figures came out a DECADE ago mate
    Visible joints: far out they're figures for Christ's sake try to make a video of you posing your statues would be fun.
    Hate posing cause you're not a six-year-old old but you can't pose well that just speaks for itself...
    I respect that you prefer huge statues over small figures and collecting preference is subjective so perhaps your title should be small figures suck rather than a clickbait. I never liked collecting statues but never had I felt the need to shit on them lol

    Why I hate large scale sideshow statues...
    1. They cost too much. Thousands of dollars for just 1 item.
    2. They take up way too much space.
    I can place 4 hot toys where 1 statue would go. Way waaaaaay too much space.
    3. They never look like the character. Hot toys head sculpts look almost life like and look exactly like your favorite character.
    4. Since hot toys take less space...you can collect a large variety of figures.
    5. You have to always dust large figures. With Hot toys you can easily fit the figures into a display case. Cost to much to find super large display case to cover such large sculpts. Lol.
    Facts don't lie. Lol.
    6. People who collect sideshow large figures usually complain too much, cry babies, and probably have a small pee wee. Lmao.
    DROP MIC. IM OUT. GOOD NIGHT. 😃

    I think that your problems relate to action figures in general, and not JUST Hot Toys. I mean, every figure will have visible joints, every figure will look like plastic, I mean… they’re action figures, you know? What’s the solution here, should Hot Toys make extremely fragile polystone figures that only have articulation on the neck and waist, IF it is not visible? Which would make it 95% a statue, so anyone would just buy a statue instead? Like seriously, what’s the solution here?

    There are pros and cons. 1/3 and so on cost so much money. If I had an endless amount of money I would probably stick with bigger statues and bust too. Also space is the issue too. Most people don't live in giant house where they have unlimited space. I personally collect and appreciate both. For example iam a huge Wolverine Hugh Jackman fan. Where can I get a licensed Wolverine Hugh jackmen statue at? There for hot toys takes the cake on that

    Idk the 10 year old loki you have literally had better paint & sculpting too most of your statues IMO
    Comparing to modern hot toys, even some 1/3 scale statues aren’t as good.
    Personally I collect hot toys so I’m biased but I enjoy figure photography and posing, that’s where I get my enjoyment from it 🤷‍♂️
    I just think some of the points you’d made are null & void for modern hot toys, their paint, sculpt and even their ‘visible joints’ which needs to be looked at on a case by case basis.

  • @ricksfigz
    @ricksfigz ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Check the new 1:6 InArt Joker and compare him with your Joker statues. I get your points but I much prefer Hot Toys and other 1:6 figures due to their accessories and the multiple options they offer us with every single release, different heads, hands etc plus I think anything above 1:6 is just too big. The presence isn’t nearly comparable to your statues but I rather have multiple characters, articulation and options. Very interesting video nonetheless.

    What you say about hot toys may be true, I don't know, I do not own them so I can't judge. But I follow some HT collecting channels and I enjoy them. When it comes to me then I've a different point: what I collect is mostly Doom. Except for the Prime1 1/3, which I cant afford anymore because the 1k+ shipment and because it somehow sold out, and a gamingheads 1/4 all the Doom collectible items you can find out there are small like in the 1/6 range. I have a Pinkie statue which is small but, except for a seemline, is great. Someone like me what should do? Renounce to collecting because companies just make the same boring characters over and over? (marvel & Dc always) So i need to collect the smaller stuff. What I really do like of your collection are your ECC pieces, THOSE are the big statues everyone should buy I think. I absolutely love your Faun 1/3 maquette and Faun bust and all your ECC pieces, but those are very limited edition and quite expensive. Not everyone can collect the bigger stuff so what should we do?? :(

    Unpopular opinion but you're right and all the arguments the 1/6 collectors are making here are the same 1/12 collectors make to them. Statues are more expensive but also undoubtedly a more long term investment and honestly considering degradation of a lot of 1/6 figs statues will probably retain their vaule and condition over a much longer period of time. At the end of the day all this shit is expensive no matter how you slice it but I think they're are a lot of people in the comments trying to justify their own purchases and act like $200-400 for a figure still isn't expensive.
