The “ser vs. estar” situation is practically the same in Spanish and Portuguese. “Ser” means “to be” when referring to whatever facts “sit,” and “estar” means “to be” when referring to whatever facts “stand.”
In the video, "I'm ill" example was given with estar but if I were to talk about illnesses that can't easily be changed, such as cancer or mental illnesses, should I use estar or ser?
Olá! ser doente means more to be born with some illness (it can be mental ilness) but even with cancer there is always hope and it should be use verb estar or ter🙂
