  • This is one of the rarest computers I have ever found, a prototype of a Compaq LTE Elite 4/100CX which is a model that was never released.
This laptop features a 100MHz 486DX4 CPU (production models topped out at 75MHz) and ESS ES1688 audio, by far the most special feature about it. No production LTE Elite ever had built in audio of any kind.
In this video I show the audio connectors on the side and that there's no identifying labels of any kind on the bottom (also notice how it just says "Compaq" on the lid with no model written under the logo). I also run Microsoft GIF Animator 1.0 and show this laptop's ability to play a high-quality GIF (a little choppy but that's mostly due to the hard drive trying to keep up). Then I run Wolfenstein 3-D which runs great and with full sound. And lastly I play the classic "canyon.mid" file that was included with Windows, not something generally possible with an LTE Elite!

This is awesome! I have a 4/75C myself (no X), which seems to be a relatively rare spec as I always see the 4/75CX instead. The only difference is that the C uses one of the worst color displays I've ever seen in a laptop, lol. It's passive and has this awful dot crawl effect as it dithers colors in a weird way. Other than that, it's completely standard, obviously with no audio and only a 75 MHz chip, like you mentioned.

This is quite possibly the perfect 90s DOS gaming laptop. What's the video chip again? I used to have the top-of-the-line release model (the 75 you mentioned), and all I remember is that it's some obscure Western Digital chip (I think), and that it was very DOS compatible and ran Duke Nukem 3D really well. Also, how well does it keep that extra 25 MHz cool?

Yes, this is an incredible laptop for sure! It’s uses a Cirrus Logic chip, don’t remember the exact model though, will have to check.
It stays pretty cool actually! It has a much larger heatsink than the 75MHz model to keep it cool.
