I've been watching this version of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar every Easter since 1973 when I was 7 years old. Yvonne Elliman has such a beseeching sound in her vocals.

I was a former Scholastic Collegiate Style wrestler winning two conference tournament titles. Recently got out of the Army as a military police officer in West Germany. I was a tough cookie. I heard this woman sing this song and felt tears on my face and there was nothing I could about it. It felt like relief somehow.

A transformed Mary Magdalene struggles to understand her role in the life of Jesus. The singer was Yvonne Elliman. This song was a top forty hit for her in 1971. She also landed a number one hit in 1977 with "If I Can't Have You" off of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

I think this is maybe, the second most powerful scene from that movie/play after the Gethsemane scene with Ted Neeley. I think the Judas scene is pretty powerful as well. This performance and song are ABSOLUTELY, ICONIC, now and this lady is ABSOLUTELY, OUTSTANDING.
I'm so, so, overjoyed that you younger people are discovering and enjoying this style of music and singing. Now if only, more of you would attempt to incorporate it into modern pop, we could see a revival of great music again.
Warmest Wishes. Be Well and Safe. Out. 🙂🖐🏼😌

To truly understand this song, you first have to look at the title of the play it was in-"Jesus Christ Superstar". Knowing that, you'll understand that the song is really about Mary Magdalene's inner struggle between her feelings for her Lord and savior (Jesus Christ), and the man, Jesus Christ. It is definitely not about a regular love affair between an ordinary man and woman.

I was also afraid of the presents of Jesus, I became fearful, and in my mindset, I said , " I wasn't ready," then what little light was in the room went dark, and the engery disappeared. I heard a bird flutter out of the fire place just above my head and out into the night sky !!!. I now believe it was his spirit !!!. I resisted him because I was afraid , and wasn't ready !!!. I'm ready now but still afraid, 30 years later !!!.

Guess what? Your heart has always been ready but the mind is a hindrance. That's why you were so perceptive to the light and bird fluttering. Your brain has been very active. What did He tell us? Be still and know that I am God. Get out of your own way, friend. He never left you because He loves you. Peace.

Yvonne Elliman is an underrated singer. She sang background vocals for Eric Clapton in the mid-70's. Plus, she scored a #1 single with the Bee Gees song, If I Can't Have You, from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

Fay, this Mary Magdalene singing to a sleeping Jesus Christ. In this filmed musical, Mary has just started following Jesus. Mary is falling in love with Jesus in this scene, but has conflicted feelings about it as she is gradually realizing how different and special Jesus is from everyone else. This musical was written by the greats Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and Tim Rice (lyrics). Webber/Rice also wrote "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Evita." Ted Neeley (Jesus) and Yvonne Elliman (Mary) still perform together from time to time. "Everything"s Alright" is another popular song from this musical featuring Neeley, Yvonne, and Carl Anderson as Judas Iscariot.

Jesus Christ Superstar the rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice - made the gospels come alive to me, when I heard as a teenager. Knew the story from school, but it never really made sense... this show did. Total atheist as I am, Webber and Rice hit the nail on the head. Yvonne Elliman will always be Mary Magdalene to me. Show many shows, Llyod Webber and Rice made - love them all. Madonna as Evita was probably the pinnacle. Nice one.

  • @OronOfMontreal

The woman singing is the character of Mary Magdalene, from the Bible's New Testament - AKA the Gospels.
The sexist male hierarchy of the Catholic Church decided early on that they could not allow History to record that Mary Magdalene was a high-ranking teacher in the Christ's organization. Instead, the Church Fathers decided to portray Mary as a prostitute whom Jesus had saved from being stoned to death for the crime of adultery.
This is why Mary sings here that she has known so many men before, in so many ways. She sings of herself as a hard-headed business woman, for whom love has always been a business transaction. So when she meets a man who supposedly cares about her without wanting to sleep with her or marry her, her own heart begins to open. She sees and hears all the good that Jesus wants to do for his people, the Jews of Roman-era Judea, and she becomes confused by his unique decency and kind purposes.

@@catherinelw9365 Mary Magdalene is mentioned 3 times in the Bible. Not once is she referred to as a prostitute. (Luke 8:1-3) she supports Jesus financially, (John 20:11-18) She is the first witness of resurrection and , Acts 1:14). The prostitute that washes Jesus's feet was never named as Mary Magdalene.
