Yes. Ian Gillian was the original singer on the concept album and sang it brilliantly. But since he had commitments to Deep Purple he couldn't do the stage show or the movie. So we will never know how good an actor he is. Neeley WAS Jesus all around.
I watched that movie since I was a little girl. I still get goosebumps 20 years later. Great music, good acting, and still had some of the era's flare. Very touching.

Hi Harry! Greetings from Chicago! I met Ted Neely in Chicago about 6 years ago during a showing of JCSS the movie, I was dressed in costume as Judas, and Mr. Neely called me up to the stage, and he and I acted out a scene from this movie!! I was starstruck!
If you watch this movie be forewarned that it is extremely powerful and may affect you and change you in very deep ways. It did me when I saw it in the theater when it came out. Be prepared...
Loved your heart felt reaction. This scene always ends with me sobbing uncontrollably. The beauty, passion, doubt and pain in this performance is just unparalleled. The original version was sung Ian Gillian of Deep Purple. Both Ted Neely and Ian Gillian sing the song with the same intensity and technical brilliance. You should check out Ian’s gorgeous version. Anyway, thank you for sharing this with us. 💜💜💜
JCSS had a one night showing at the local theatre a couple of years ago, so I took a date who had never heard or seen it. When we left her first comment was she couldn't decide whether or not the movie was sacrilegious. It has that kind of affect on people. I highly recommend seeing it. My favorite song is by Yvonne Elliman who plays Mary Magdalene, "I don't know how to love him". Powerful stuff.
I always enjoy your reviews, and yes this movie is 50 years old and still holds up. I also love the montage of paintings of the crucifixion. It is, as you said, very, very powerful.
I have seen Jesus Christ Superstar probably 50+ times. Its my favorite musical. You will love it. Also Ted Neely traveled the country performing that act on stage (from the movie) and has done it for over 35+ yrs now. That takes dedication & devotion. Its truly amazing he didn't lose the ability to sing that high note, but his voice did get slightly deeper, w/ even more grit too, more range if you can believe it. Anyone who hasn't seen the movie is truly missing something great. I believe it was made in 1970-71? Enjoy!!
Unbelievable movie. I saw it in 1973 and was blown away! Incredible and awe-inspiring! Must see. My favorite movie EVER!! I've since seen it 30+ times (with a vcr and dvd!). PLEASE take the time to see it.
I remember going to the movie theater to watch this when it came out and I stayed to watch it again. I bought the vinyl LP soundtrack album and wore it out! I still have the piano songbook of the movie. This movie absolutely struck a chord with me and affected me so deeply. So, so sorry Carl Anderson, who played Judas, passed away in 2004. His performance in JCS the movie was beyond magnificent.
on the movie release I watched it 5 times in 10 days (when you had to go to the theatre). I watched the movie 50 times. Best movie of Jesus by a mile. Every song and performance is pure magic.
What's amazing is looking up Ted Neeley's recent performances and finding the best parts of his vocals are still those astronomical high notes! Amazing for an now 80 year old.
Ted Neely was in his early twenties when he performed in this rock opera. Still to this day if you Google him here in TH-cam or even Facebook, Ted is still performing this part in Italy yearly. His voice is just as strong and still very gripping to listen to. A great person too meet and even great to have a conversation with. I have a long with most of the cast from the movie. All except for Carl Anderson, Judas and The gentlemen who played King Herod. Ted also tours the US with some of the cast from "Jesus Christ Superstar", anniversary tours.
So glad that you reacted to this This is a great great performance and song and it does show the human and divine side of Jesus also you should check out Carl Anderson's Heaven on my mind (terriffic) and Yvonne Ellinan Everything's Alright. The whole movie you should see. Love your channel.
I've seen the live performance with Ted Neely and Carl Anderson and consider myself lucky. The writing is a combination of genius and devine intervention. Carl Anderson is magnificent from the opening # , Heaven on their minds till his ending. Since then I've seen 4 other productions and it's always satisfying. Please go see it if you can.

Hope you've seen the film now Harry. Showed this film to my kids for Easter 2023. They were knocked out by how good the songs were and could not believe they hadn't heard them before. Good Friday masterpiece.
I feel privileged to have been able to see it live in Barcelona a few years ago. Just before Ted Neeley left us. I think I've seen the movie about 300 times, but what I felt that day in the theater cannot be described
Jesus came as a man to suffer as a man. We’ll all come to a point where we doubt, feel hopeless, lost. When He came to His Gethsemane moment He chose obedience to God.
"Superstar" was by far the best of Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice's rock opera and in its time was looked on at first as underground music. The first time I heard it in full was under the bedclothes late at night on Radio Luxembourg. This is one of the high points, Jesus last prayers before being arrested and put on trial. Some of the theology is a bit suspect but it still was a heavy influence on many people at the time.
This movie was directed by the great Norman Jewison, a legendary director. He was able to get some of the most powerful performances from a cast of relative unknown actors and singers. Only Barry Dennen, the actor playing Pilate, had experience in musical films. Norm also directed Fiddler On The Roof, which is where he worked with Barry and Barry presented the original Brown album to him and suggested that he make a movie from the album. Norm loved the idea and took it to Universal, where he got a very small budget to make the movie. The studio wanted more known actors in lead roles, but that would eat too much of the already low budget. He hand picked Ted Neely (Jesus) and Carl Anderson (Judas) from two unknown actors, but they both knocked it out of the park, you will be just as impressed with Anderson, but for different reasons. His delivery is also very heart felt. The album was written by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and Tim Rice (lyrics) and was a unique idea of viewing Jesus through the eyes of Judas. It makes Judas a more sympathetic character, which is probably not accurate, but like most art, it asks the question “what if”. Everyone in the movie did a phenomenal job, but the parts of Jesus and Judas are the two biggest roles in the movie and boy do they deliver. Norm Jewison is the mastermind behind this cinematic masterpiece, which is why it has stood the test of time, even though the lifts maybe dated. Yvonne Elliman also gives a heart wrenching performance as Mary Madeline.
oh man, as someone who has loved that movie since the early 90s (and gotten to meet Ted Neely! genuinely one of the softest and kindest people i have ever met.) i was so dearly enjoying your reaction. the movie is very much set in contemporary (VERY VERY 70s) times and the lyrics reflect that often - but Neely's Jesus - nicknamed "Screaming Jesus" for delightfully obvious reasons - and Carl Anderson's Judas both have such unbelievable power and pathos. i do hope you get a chance to sit and watch the whole thing through one of these days. it's very much concerned with Jesus the man. yes, he's the son of God - but born to a human mother in a human body with human needs. and, as you saw in his moment of doubt and uncertainty in the garden, Ted brings some of the most heartbreaking humanity to the role he is playing. through the movie, it shows his growing discomfort, concern, and even fear with people refusing to hear him explain that he's a man, and instead choosing to believe he is directly God himself. Carl Anderson does an EXQUISITE job of trying desperately to bring Jesus' attention to this before it's too late, and the narrative does an amazing job of showing that the choices he made were for the love of Jesus, the man. it's VERY 70s, and at times VERY campy. but the parts that hit? hit like this scene in the garden. i do hope you watch it and enjoy it one of these days. ❤
First watch of this channel, long-time fan of Ted Neeley and JCS, and I really appreciate your reaction. It felt very real, nothing staged for the audience or the likes, simple and straightforward. Just what I hoped for. I'll keep checking your content, thanks.
This is the original Jesus Christ Superstar. It's a Rock opera from the 1970s. Believe it or not this movie brought a lot of people back in the 70s to church. People who would not step foot in a church until they saw this. San Francisco Catholic church saw an influx of young people because this movie spoke to them...
Ted Neely has one of the best voices I’ve ever heard! I highly recommend getting the album and watching the movie…”Jesus Christ superstar”. My parents took me to see it live on Broadway and they also made a movie of same in the 1980s. Neely’s voice has so much emotion that you end up crying. Harri, this is an incredible score. My personal favorite recording is the original concept album. It was remastered in 2020 for the 50th anniversary of the show. No one comes close to Ted Neeley's performance. I was completely blown away when I heard him in my Grade 7 music class. Thanks to my awesome music teacher for introducing me to this amazing movie. Now listen to Carl Anderson as Judas "Heaven on their Minds".
You would absolutely love that movie!!! And I was taught that Jesus was a human that had Divine capabilities...that was actually the point...that he was human, and God could live in each of us. We are not separate from God. So, yes, this viewpoint is to make him/God more relatable to every individual.
You liked Ted Neeley’s performance?! Wait until you listen to Carl Anderson as Judas. The song before Gethsemani is a duet from Heaven: “The Last Supper “

He and Carl deserved Oscar nods.😮😮
Saw Ted Neeley on stage......INCREDIBLE
Unbelievable performance! No one wi ever top it! Also please listen to Carl Anderson as Judas, you will never be the same
I have seen Jesus Christ Superstar probably 50+ times.
Enjoy!!
My favourite song from the movie. Such emotionally powerful vocals ❤
Ted Needley is still on tour and can still hit those high notes. Awesome performance from this man.
ONE of the GREATEST scores EVER.. ALW is a genius! ❤❤❤❤❤ Ted Neely was so HOT to us teenagers 😂
Agreed… on all accounts! Always loved this musical and he’s so handsome 😂
The Ian Gillian version of this song is GREAT also.
^this^
From the original concept album. The part of JC was written specifically for Ian Gillan of Deep Purple fame.
It’s fabulous!
It's a wonderful album start to finish.
You're in for a real treat when you finally watch JC Superstar! Carl Anderson, Yvonne Elliman and the whole cast totally deliver!
Ted is still doing this on the 50th anniversary and still brings it every night in performance.
In the 90's got to see Ted and Carl perform JSC on Tour. The ladies in the audience squealed when he hit the high note. It was amazing.
Yvonne elliman was great in it as well
@@DonnaLombardo-n5i She wasn't on that tour but was amazing in the movie.
By all means watch this musical. It is outstanding. I know I'm old but we had the album from this musical in the 70's. We listened to it ALL the time.
on the movie release I watched it 5 times in 10 days (when you had to go to the theatre).
Ian Gillan of Deep Purple is the original singer of Gethsemane, and he has no equal. PERIOD!
Pull up Steve Balsamo’s performance at Ahoy, Scotland. Neeley’s the all-time greatest, but Balsamo’s performance there is my favorite
Enjoy this every time I see it harry love the film you have to watch it the cast are amazing every one of them one of my all time favourite films defo my fave musical take care stay safe
Hope you've seen the film now Harry. Showed this film to my kids for Easter 2023. They were knocked out by how good the songs were and could not believe they hadn't heard them before. Good Friday masterpiece.
Hi Harri, Jesus was fully human and fully God. He shared in all our human feelings and emotions 🙏🏻
I feel privileged to have been able to see it live in Barcelona a few years ago. Just before Ted Neeley left us. I think I've seen the movie about 300 times, but what I felt that day in the theater cannot be described
So good to hear that there are others like me that watched this movie so many times and never get sick of it
Jesus came as a man to suffer as a man. We’ll all come to a point where we doubt, feel hopeless, lost. When He came to His Gethsemane moment He chose obedience to God.
Amazing Rock Opera of my day!
I love his version the best. Great opera.
YOU ARE GOING TO ADORE AND LEARN MUCH FROM THIS MOVIE ♥️♥️♥️
My favourite song for 50 years with Ted singing it.❤
This movie was directed by the great Norman Jewison, a legendary director.
Ironically I’m an Atheist, but it’s so beautiful that I always get goosebumps…especially when Ted Neely sings! I’m so happy you enjoyed it. 😊☺️❤️
I'm another atheist who loves this musical!
I'm not a god person... at all... but everytime I watch this movie it really moves me... the entire movie... it's crazy...I can't watch it much because it affects me... Great reaction. Thank you. ❤
You should pick up your cross and become a follower.
If this moves you and affects you, you need to seriously look at giving yourself to Jesus.
I've seen the movie well over 50 times.
Wonderful music.
Harri, this is an incredible score. My personal favorite recording is the original concept album. It was remastered in 2020 for the 50th anniversary of the show. I think the best film version is the 2000 revival filmed stage production, but that's just my opinion! Hope you get a chance to do a full watch/listen soon. It's great stuff. 🙂
Young man you need to o back and watch your reaction to this, you just got filled with the holy spirit❤
One of my favorite movies ever, I've seen it more times than I can count, know every word to every song. And I had the pleasure of seeing the live production (front row) with both Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson - magical.
I just love you! Your reactions are worthy of reactions from us! I could see you responding to the fear and the doubt and the anger rising in Jesus. You rock. Now, watch the movie!
This album is like a rocket. Once it starts, there's no stopping it until its played out.
I saw this life at the theatre in London 1976!
It still gives me goosebumps!
Jesus Christ Superstar - A Masterpiece for my generation!
The song before Gethsemani is a duet from Heaven: “The Last Supper “
great musical.. one of the best imo
I really hope you do the rest of the songs in the movie. Especially Simon’s Zealots.
The movie came out in 1973 and it's my favorite movie! :)
Makes me cry every time.
I’ve loved this movie. I met Ted several times. A really nice man
I can't believe your haven't seeing the movie of Jesus Christ Superstar. I've been wanting it every Easter time for the last 40 years. My favourite rock Opera
Very good movie, I must of watch it 100 times, super music!!!
Thank goodness I got to see Ted Neeley and the late Carl Anderson in 1996 at the Saroyan Theatre, Fresno CA. Excellent and awesome experience of seeing JCS live. Syreeta (Stevie Wonder's ex wife who sadly passed in 2004) portrayed Mary Magdalene.
The original score is SOOOOO GOOD fell in love with it in college many years ago still sing every word. The movie is a little therw out the with 70's symbolism and spirituality. If you cam see a live production or a video of the original production that would be BEST BESTIE. LOL😂
You have got to see this movie! It’s great! I liked the Judas character. Great songs!
I seen the play with Ted. Sooo amazing ! Carl Anderson as Judas is AMAZING. You must watch the original movie from the 70s. Jesus Christ Super Star. Sooooooo Good !
