I’m in the same boat. I still have a Cinema Display and a Thunderbolt Display. I can’t bring myself to replace either one with the flimsy monitors available. Also I don’t want to spend upwards from $1500 for the new Apple monitor. Luckily I think my eyeballs are at the 2K resolution range so I don’t need to worry about 5K resolution. I guess that’s one of the advantages of being 70 years old?
Just got one for $140 like new. Love it. Colors are actually good for me. Someone might have calibrated mine. Seems to match my MacBook Air M1 quite nicely.
My 2020 M1 8/8 core MacBook Air's keyboard has started to fail, so I'm going to "Dock It" until I can afford to replace the keyboard or upgrade. Just bought a 27" Thunderbolt locally for $100 with Apple Thunderbolt to C adapter ($49.99) and Magsafe adapter ($9.99) included... so $40 .02 for the Thunderbolt Display! - Oh, plus a $10 Uber ride to get it home safe!
I originally ordered mine back in 2011, after long long 11 years later I just ordered new apple studio display 5k. The old thunderbolt cinema display still works but I'll be using that as my 2nd monitor. Very happy how it served me. Paid for itself over time.
My Thunderbolt display is from 2014 - 10 years. I use with my trusty MacBook Pro Retina 15" mi 2012 to produce posts for web, magazines and editorial work. The main problem is that the newer systems are not supported. Both machines worl perfectly well for what I do. So... when the next generation (M4 chip) comes out, I'll probably go for a new Mac, whic might be a Mini Pro, A Studio or a MacBook Pro, will wait to see where needs meet my pocket at the time. Regarding the display, I REALLY love the Thunderbolt for its colors, sound, contrast, brightness (and I work near a LARGE window). It's colors are on par with my iPhone 15 Pro Max, not that big of a difference. I'll wait until Apple add a few improvements to the Studio Display, like a mini LED display, to go for it and see a REAL big difference. I had many monitors before and since I picked the Thunderbolt I never looked for another. I'll stay with my Thunderbolt. For what I do it serves me perfectly. Ah, I see everybody complaining about bezels size. I feel this is valid for objects that are too close to our eyes, like an iPhone, an iPad and MacBooks. On a display, I find bezels are good to isolate the image I'm working on from the background. Not bad at all. And they better be black, The white ones on newer iMacs are not good at isolating the image,
If the thunderbolt cable is in bad condition, are you able to connect to the monitor using a thunderbolt cable from a Mac Air/Pro to the thunderbolt port at the back of the monitor? Will you get an image this way?
Great video, but one correction, it can power laptop! I have it connected to my M1 Macbook pro with adapter it works great EDIT: the colors are actually quite good too, you just need to calibrate. For me the Thunderbolt calibration is perfect for my use case
I've been doing a ton of research and I can't find a better monitor than my 2011 Apple Thunderbolt display. I looked at the new Apple Studio display but surprisingly it's not that much better. It's a bit brighter and it would add more screen real estate but colors, pixals and screen quality seem about the same. Doesn't seem worth the $1600 to upgrade. If Apple did come out with a new Studio Display with HDR and 120Hz then I would consider upgrading. The only other option I considered is the BenQ PD3220 32" Display because of it's color accuracy and Hotkey Puck.
i just bought the Apple Cinema Display 24 inch for 10 euros. Works like an charm and fits perfect for my office. If it ever gets stolen, i would not care. But it does look really nice. and for only 10 euros.
@@GaryJahman I hope so too. The seller told me that he did not know the price, and he just wanted to make someone happy. Well, he certainly did! I love the matt finish. I am just not sure about the thunderbolt display. I can get the thunderbolt display for 60 euros, but it has gloss on it.... I am not sure if the reflection is that bad.
So I still have a Thunderbolt Display and I need to replace it for all the same reasons PLUS it is starting to develop these off color streaks creeping up from the bottom. A few months in the future and Apple has released the Studio Display but good lord, I am not gonna pay $1600 for that thing. I remember feeling very foolish for paying around a grand for the Thunderbolt Display and it has been a champ, but most monitor prices have dropped in that size range and now you can easily get a vast array of 32 inch monitors for under a thousand. There has got to be a professional level alternative. My problem is that most 32 inch monitors seem to be oriented towards gaming, and the few that claim to have good color accuracy are dim even in comparison to the Thunderbolt Display. Looks like I will need to give up some brightness, build quality, and the nice speakers and spend around $1200 to get a 32 worthy of editing photography. I really wish Apple had just made the studio display in two sizes and made it $500 cheaper, I would have likely paid a healthy premium for an Apple branded replacement to my good old Thunderbolt Display.
One hundred percent agree with you! Especially 32 inches monitors are very rare. The thing is that you'll need to buy a monitor and add extra stuff. So for me, when I replaced this one for a LG UltraWide, I needed to buy additional speakers and a docking station. Good luck with your search and thanks for watching 😃😃😃
I have one suggestion, and it's to pick up a legacy 5K iMac 27" and do some trickery to use it as a display! I am not sure this can be done, but I have one of these with a bad Fusion drive I am about to resurrect. It would be amazing if there was a way to use the iMac display with a M2 laptop
Just picked up a Dell S2722QC, which has USB-C 65w to power my Macbook M1 Pro, 4k, USB-A connectors, 1000:1 contrast ratio, wide gamut, only 60hz (but fine for productivity and most gaming), really low input lag, and an overall decent design. This setup replaces an aging iMac 2014 which had a great 5k display. You can get the Dell on sale or refurbished for great prices. That said, the screen on the M1 Pro, even though 14" will get the most usage.
@@GaryJahman I managed to get mine for $380 Canadian refurbished from a seller on BestBuy. Dell regularly holds sales as their MSRP is way too high but the monitor can be found for very competitive prices. It is very similar quality to the lauded older u2720q.

I'm having the same problem. I would also like to buy a new monitor from Apple. Unfortunately there is none, only the professional monitor Pro XDR which is way too expensive for me. I tried the Dell U2722DE Ultrasharp USB-C Hub Monitor. Nice monitor, good price. But I had to send that monitor back because there were pixels in the screen that remained off or stayed on too brightly. The screen has not been available for months. It is currently available again. Perhaps this is a suitable option for replacing your Apple Thunderbolt display. Although I still hope that Apple will offer a cheaper version of the Pro XDR monitor this year.
@@GaryJahman I hope you enjoy your UltraWide LG monitor. Incidentally, I saw that Samsung has announced three new monitors, of which the M8 model is a good and beautiful model for Mac users. It is similar in design to Apple's Pro Display XDR. In any case, it comes in a white version. The price and release date have not yet been announced.

My iPad Pro M1 works fine with it, and with the new iPad OS 16, you can extend the display instead of just duplicating it, so it actually fills the whole screen and gives you a nice dual monitor setup with your iPad.
