    Michigan Detroit, it used to be the city of dreams, a place with culture and diversity, but since the 1960s it fell into a downfall, there was a great exodus of the city and this left a path of abandonment on its way.
    Today we will show you the aftermath of these events and take you to some of Detroit's many abandoned churches, we will take a fascinating tour through an abandoned Gothic Revival Church, afterward a 1960s Body of Christ Church and as the cherry on the cake, we will end this documentary with a Vietnamese Church.
    Let’s start this off with the Woodward Presbyterian Church, a magnificent building that was constructed in 1911 in Gothic Revival style by the architect Sidney Badgley. At its height, there were more than 2200 church members and it even got the title of being the most beautiful church in the greater Detroit area.
    Unfortunately, after the exodus of Detroit started, its members started to dwindle, at the turn of the century the church had only 200 active members left, its funds started to diminish and the building started to fall into disrepair, this lasted until the year 2005 when the pastor passed away and as a result, the church was closed indefinitely.

    I live in the suburbs of where that church is located. It is very beautiful and I'm glad you caught it before it's destroyed completely. When you were standing at the top, traditionally that's where the choir would sing from. They didn't need to have any microphones because being up there their voices would echo throughout the whole church. They call that the balcony. I can imagine the haunting and beautiful sound of the voices echoing throughout that beautiful space. I have watched you for a long time. I appreciate how respectful you are and how daring. 😊 Keep on exploring. Sincerely, Carly
    You would be amazed how stained glass is made. Every single tiny individual piece is cut by hand and then buffed along the edge and then by hand a thin piece of copper is wrapped around the side edge. All the pieces are laid out on top of a pattern and then someone comes and solders all the pieces together. Just in one stained Glass lamp there can be over 3,000 individual pieces of glass. So those beautiful windows that are very intricate were made of tens of thousands of little pieces of different colored glass. It really is an amazing art. In the last Church, the Vietnamese stained glass had a picture of a dog which represents the Holy Spirit of God and I believe the apostles of Jesus Christ were represented in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Yes, I sat in a church pew or bench every Sunday of my life for years on end. They're always is a very special feeling in the Church. The priest would go behind the podium in my church and read one part of the Gospel of one of the four main apostles and then he would do a 15 minute sermon and then the rest of the service would continue. Usually 1 hour in total. I loved watching you in Europe. You are famous here! I recognized your name immediately. Take care guys.

    The baptismal was actually for adults as well as older children to be baptized in many American Protestant churches. You have done a great job. The second 1970’s church has much more expensive stained glass windows. Many newer churches cannot afford stained glass or they will be geometrical shapes. The smaller room would probably be for services during the week. The third is a Vietnamese Catholic Church. Beautiful windows. The symbols are from the Bible. Thank you for once again posting a great video. The music, the enthusiasm you always bring, and respect when exploring are wonderful.

    The brown box, in the basement of the first church, is a Leslie speaker for an electronic organ. The baptismals are also used for adults, which are typically the majority of baptisms. They might do a baptism after a sunday service every 3-6 months. depending on demand There should be a kitchen somewhere in the basement. The smaller worship area was probably for a midweek or youth service. The balconies were typically choir lofts.Modern US churches are very much about community, especially black churches. Often having all day activities and community dinners.

    You can tell the truth about Detroit. The part of the city that was abandoned was do to the riots in 1967 that lasted for 5 days. The people burned down businesses, homes, grocery stores and very little was left once the smoked cleared. The State vowed never to rebuild that section of Detroit and so much of the area still remains in ruins and is abandoned. Many of the Wealthy that moved away took their businesses with them and the job market dried up. Even the once booming industrial areas where cars and tires were being made shut down and moved out of the city (Once called the Motor City) has little to nothing to offer. There are many crack houses and vagrants that live in the abandoned homes so it's very dangerous in much of the area so be careful travel around in that section of the city.

    • @rtyria
      @rtyria ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was looking for this comment. Detroit would be a completely different place if it hadn't been for those riots. There are still sections of the city where everybody leaves before sunset because it's so dangerous.

      @@rtyria It's really sad isn't it? It was once one of the most thriving and successful cities in American and now it sits in ruins. Street after street overgrown and what was once beautiful neighborhoods are just a vertual ghost town accept for the gangs and dealers and homeless that use the empty houses and buildings. There is so much crime there. A few years ago the city counsel was considering bulldozing the entire area and using it for agriculture land but I guess they scrapped that idea because no more has been said about it.

    • @bobbbobb4663
      @bobbbobb4663 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would argue the riots were more of an effect versus a cause. Industries were moving out of Detroit in the 40’s and Detroit population peaked in 1950. Population dropped by 180,000 from 1950 to 1960. The automotive recession of 1958 didn’t help either.

    • @rtyria
      @rtyria ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Meriale46 They have to make the area safe before farmers would be willing to invest there. All the gangs and dealers would have to do is burn the farmers out a time or twice and they would destroy the farmer completely and ruin the entire project.

      @@rtyria Chicago Illinois is just as bad, probably much worse. It is terrible how this stuff goes on and on. It needs to be stopped by the leaders, It is up to them to let them know they will make sure the law punishes and will never allow them out again if it happens more than once. They must serve their sentence and no matter what their bail as 'none should be set, ever. ' They just stay in jail until the sentencing, and then must abide by what the jury says. " By and for, the people" Once the trouble makers are off the streets it would be much safer again. People would hesitate to do crimes as they know they will be punished and they will not be out on good behavior either. I may seem harsh, but as long as they get out of jail before they serve anything much, the better off we will be and less crime will happen, if we prove that we are all on the "same page" As long as we do not keep laws and higher standards and make people enforce those laws, and people to obey them, the worse it will become all over. It will spread. It starts with the correct leaders in office, and police who are fair, but do abide by the laws totally and realize courts will settle the matters.

    You were actually very perceptive in emphasizing the community aspect behind these churches, and actually all churches. The actual structures are the worship spaces consecrated for worship and all the other activities that support the local community. However, the actual churches are the members, congregants or parishoners. A body of believers, the church, ideally would be able to hold worship services in their parking lot should the actual building be lost for any unfortunate reason or calamity because it's the people, the community, who are actually 'the church'. Thank you very much for sharing these interesting houses of worship with us. These are indeed sacred spaces. All the best to you in your ongoing adventures.

I follow a few Detroit accounts on Instagram and it looks like a wasteland in many areas that once had bustling neighborhoods and gorgeous homes. Very depressing. I truly hope what is left can possibly be saved. The churches will have to be repurposed, unless the practice of Christianity makes a comeback. It's been in decline since WWII. I'm not a religious person but I'm starting to see a correlation between churches and neighborhoods falling apart.

    Heart warming that you’ve come to Detroit. To work your craft ... I’ve watched your videos for if I’m not mistaken several years . I lived right down the street from the 1st church and had actually gone to its service one Sunday....probably back in the 80s , it looks much larger now that it’s emptied out and not in use , that exterior was quite unique with its pinkish stone color that wasn’t shown in this video. Quite shameful that the 2nd church could not be spared this fate with it being so young ( for a church) only being built during the 70s seems as though another congregation could have moved to that location but
    I guess many decide to move to the suburbs rather stay in the city , for context 2010 was during the real estate decline here in America , actually a couple years earlier was the height but it was still going on during 2010 I’m thinking this church may have been financially unstable at the time of its closing , Oh and thanks for adding that economically Detroit is in a better financial situation than during its grand bankruptcy period , Showing the decay of these churches may give the impression that this is the WHOLE picture of what’s going on here

You can't drive into it anymore because it's gated off but you can walk in. It used to be a mining town until the mine caught fire and has been burning now for 60 years now. They had to evacuate the town due to the dangers of toxic gases and the fear that the ground would open up and the fire would swallow up the entire area... it hasn't in all these years and the levels of Toxins have dropped significantly. Many Urbex travel there because the entire town is just as they left it 60 years ago. It's erry but very interesting. It's the town they based the movie Silent Hill off of.

    Old churches that have been abandoned are so hauntingly beautiful. I wish I could have explored these with you as I lived in Michigan at the time. Thank you for documenting these structures and stories before they are demolished.

    Dumnezeu sa va aiba in paza!

    That very highest area is called a “lantern.” It’s built to allow natural
    light into the church. And, yes, there would have pews (bench’s)
    in the balcony. It’s for anyone who
    wants to (or has to) climb up there, especially if the main floor is full.

    I live 30 minutes from Detroit and worked in Detroit and the architecture of so many buildings and historical homes are so beautiful, but sad to see them abandoned. Because of the economy crash many people moved to find jobs. Hopefully Detroit will make a come back because it has so much history, and they are restoring many buildings and communities.

    A lot of the lofts in back of the sanctuaries are actually where the choir would be singing. it is sad to see so many beautiful places fall to ruin. I am not a religious person, but I do appreciate the architecture and beauty of churches. My father was a minister and I hated being forced to attend services 4 hours on Sunday and an hour on Wednesday. I no longer attend church. I think I went enough for my lifetime while growing up.

    I'm posting from the UK as well. It always fascinates me that, in the States, they have such wonderful woodwork and crafts knowledge. So many wooden furnitures... with very solid wood, is amazing. I can see why now. One thing I learnt in my travel earlier on in my 20s is that... wood needs to be looked after, all of the time.. and yes, a house needs to be looked after, or else, it would be demolished, and destroyed.... when I saw the wooden structures of some of the Japan's temples... I now see why it was under the UN's UNESCO... etc etc... It does take a lot of efforts as well.

    That brown box downstairs near the baptismal was a Leslie speaker. The organ was hooked up with it and the speaker spun inside and gave it an oscillating sound. Very popular in churches and skating rinks and eventually rock music in the 1960’s.

I have a hard time to believe it’s abandoned , love the architecture , its got a beautiful historical look impressive, the second church it’s seem to be smaller , very interesting set up and got a beautiful big bench , sad to see a beautiful church got abandoned, the last church is very interesting, got a very big pray room , have lot of bench to fit many people , love the artwork on the wall , Vietnamese is a big community in Detroit indeed, thank you for sharing and documents it .
