Freddy is 100% in the right here. Reputation is EVERYTHING in poker. You DO NOT joke about cheating, especially not on camera. If he hadn't called the floor to clear his name, joke or not, a seed of doubt would have been planted that could seriously affect his chances of being invited to future games.

If Deeb did take the chips, that would be cause for concern, and Daniel would probably be right to call him on it. It just seemed like he trusted the words of other players at the table and wanted a confirmation of it. It's pretty obvious to me that Daniel was working something of an angle when he kept saying that he didn't say it. Sure, he didn't say it, but he totally wanted to know, and since no one else was taking it seriously, he did.
freddy is right because if that had aired originally, the perception of the viewing audience would have tanked his reputation, both because of the accusation because johnny seemed to mean it seriously when he said it and deeb's continued reaction to it when everyone is telling him it's a joke
His reputation was already tanked with the ultimate bet poker scandal after it was discovered that Russ Hamilton cashed out alot of the money he stole via Freddy Deeb.

The way I heard it, I think that he thought it was a joke that Freddy was in on. I don't think he really knew what was going on.
Don't forget.. the players knew this was televised.. how would anyone feel if they were accused of cheating in front of hundreds of thousands of people...no joke.
First of all it's not "cheating" to go south, it's just bad etiquette. Second of all if you can't take a joke it's one thing, but to get this tilted about it and demand to stop the game then it seems like you either have a shitty sense of humor or you have a history of going south and are mad it's being openly talked about on TV. Either way it comes across like you'd be a shitty person to play cards with.

He has a talking style of play. Great players don't incorporate talk into their game unless it is for a specific reason. Talk reveals information, it tilts opponents (which was the purpose in this situation), it influences decisions, and it builds your brand if you are lucky enough to have a brand to build
In the end, most true fans or peers don't judge you by the dirty moves you pulled, they judge you by your lifetime winnings and tourney titles. Negreanu is influencing the game without having to put chips on the table. Is it dirty? Probably. Is Daniel one of the winningest players of all time? Not probably, without a doubt

He didn't make the accusation, he didn't fellow up to confirm the accusation and he wasn't originally joking about the accusation until Deep came back, made a quick comment and then sat back while it progressed from there

For people that don't have experience in live cash games. you cannot take "some" chips of your stack. like if you win a big pot you can't say "I want to cash this ones out and not play them" you either keep playing with all your chips or you get up any given moment and cash out all your chips then go back on the board and sit down again, you might get lucky and go back to the same table or request the same table and can now buy in with a smaller different new amount. Exceptions are: if you order service like food drinks massage, you can pay with the chips from your stack. also if no board or people on the waiting list, you can request to cash out then sit back down with new amount and they will let you or if not then cash out and go back on the board and sit down with a new amount.

The rules for this are different in every single casino. Rightfully there are very few place that will allow you to take chips off the table. But there are lots of places that make it extremely hard to leave the game and start again with a smaller stack. Often there is a time limit of 2 hours you need to wait if you want to go back into a game of the same stake. Although if you go to a different stake you can usually enter immediately.
Mikey you can't just cash out your chips and go back on the board for a table. I think it's standard practice (at least every casino I've played at) you have to wait an hour before going back on the board after cashing out to avoid from players doing exactly this...that would be another form of going south if you could just cash out and immediately put yourself back on the board

Id like to think he didnt go south. However from a psychological perspective, he stacked his chips differently after it was mentioned.
Im not saying that means he did or didnt, just an interesting detail.
Its pretty grimey when players do this. I play at a home game. The host son plays there. Whenever he gets up, it seems his stack will magically go back down to starting buyin size. Everytime i play with this player elsewhere, he buys in once, maybe twice, and he either has to go to an atm or paypal another player. When his dad host and i notice the above, magically he will buy in 3-5 times, or roughly what i assume he went south with. Its a cash cow for me, so i dont want to stir the pot. If it happens to be a bad night for me, and its my money, it really bothers me.

The real reason deeb is so upset it’s because he was staked for this game and if he was going south not only is that a frowned upon the thing to do in a poker game but definitely more messed up if he’s taking money off of the table from his backer and putting it in his pocket

Actually I heard they were givin 300k, and put 200k in their pocket before the game started. -being sarcastic- Proof of this please? and it's one thing to be staked, its another to do this while on TV and be accused. Agree. I play in a wsop monthly league for points. I won a big hand against my wife. Couple guys said we were chip sharing. I no longer play in that poker league. Don't call me a cheat! And they said it multiple times in the league.

I've seen Deebs play on TV quite a few times and always seems like a pretty cool and stand-up guy. I also know Chan has been around the block a few times is as big a legend as there is in the world of poker. I think Chan, the cagey pro that he is, would not have made that accusation unless he was sure he saw something. I don't know...maybe Chan second guessed himself when he saw how much Deebs denied it, or he just wanted to keep the peace and apologized.

Negreanu totally instigated the reaction from him by asking him how much he pocketed, then kept blaming everyone else and pretending he had nothing to do with it, which speaks a lot about Negreanu. Freddy was right to stand up to that nonsense. Joking and taking light jabs at your poker buddies is one thing, but accusing someone of cheating or doing something unethical is defamatory unless you have a real suspicion that they did something wrong. If you let something like that slide it could have real world repercussions, like getting blacklisted from other types of high stakes games you might otherwise want to be invited to.
