  • Small milkweed bugs are congregated in their nymph huddles out our south door and they are so beautiful in their warning coloration! Their life history is connected to milkweed and many other plants. Let's take a look at they role they play and why saving monarchs doesn't mean killing milkweed bugs.

Good video because I’ve been curious why the MW Bugs have been spending time on other plants now. Thank you. I love your enthusiasm! It’s contagious.

Awesome! I'm so glad I was timely. :) I love enthusiastic, hope-filled people and I believe if we could all share that light, our world might be the place we all wish it would be. Thanks for sharing your light with the world too!

Yes! We observe them on many different plants late in the season; readying themselves for winter no doubt. So glad you have them too!

    So much life.
Dunno, if you-two have read Barbara Kingsolver's 'Flight Behavior', but it's about Monarchs and Milkweeds and, life. “This was a living flow, like a pulse through veins, with the cells bursting and renewing themselves as they went. The sudden vision filled her with strong emotions that embarrassed her, for fear of breaking into sobs as she had in front of her in-laws that day when the butterflies enveloped her. How was that even normal, to cry over insects?”
    ― Barbara Kingsolver, Flight Behavior

Oh yes, I've read all her books, I believe. I love this one and was fascinated thinking about the butterflies moving their roosting mountains. Thank you for reminding me of this book. There are often many to go back and reread. :)

I just saved one of these milkweed bugs from a spider web in my home. Lol the legs were still kicking so I couldn't let the spider eat this bug alive in front of my eyes if I could help it. So I took the milkweed bug outside and it walked off. I am hoping it survives. The orange and black markings were so pretty to me and something told me to help this bug for whatever reason. Lol the spider can snack on a housefly later but the milkweed bug lives to see another day! 😂 I was curious to what the bug was and googled a picture of it. That is what led me here. Thanks for sharing!

This spider has lived in the corner of the ceiling of my mud room, for some time now. Just a regular house spider. I don't bother it. Lol

I am so glad this video helped you with an id! I understand what you are saying. Usually we never interfere, but sometimes for some reason we feel the very strong urge to do so. :)

Spiders get to live here too. They live their lives, we live ours and we get to admire them! :) I'm not sure what they think of us...

I didn't listen to the end but the red bugs killed 50% of the milkweed buds at my fence line. I literally chose to cut them off as the leaves below were gone and I'm in FL and this month September I have no caterpillars for a month now. Hope it's not the beetles as I have now chosen to pinch them like the aphids the day I see them now. Sorry. My 40 planted milkweed and 30 potted milkweed for the cage are precious. Their growth is now my challenge and the red bug turned out to be infestations for me.

It's all about density. Isn't it? The best solution is to plant more, more, more! :) We have very few milkweed bugs here this year so all lives ebb and flow.
