Thank you for this awesome content!! I am not a BJJ fighter myself but I got my 6yr old started and he just got awarded his first stripe on his white belt. The coaches assembled the entire team (including the grown-ups), had him step forward, put the stripe on his belt, and everyone applauded. Man, he was proud like a real trooper.

Yeah the details of this should be honored too .it like the art is about perfection so should the belt be.it looks very neat and asteticly balanced that's probly why it was done that way.

Awesome video detailing, how the exact measurements ought to be, between the differential dan stripes, on a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black belt. It is also great to see that you have backed it up, with verifiable, as well as unquestionable academic, referential proof from the actual belt manual! With all due respect I just saw a video of ISAMI belt makers in Japan, thus bringing me onto your video link as a suggestion. Have you ever thought of getting a fully embroidered belt with the dans and so forth? I ask as it seems like typically in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, from what I have noticed, the dans are put on personally and manually by the instructors themselves, as you have just demonstrated? Excellent video explanation by the way, Osu! 👍 ☺ ✌

Excellent video brotha! Those borders look thick. I've always used 1/2" for borders and 1/4" for the degrees with 1/4" spacing in-between them. Personally, I think it looks cleaner. I also have the degrees starting from the bottom of belt working their way upwards. Thank you for sharing this video!

If you really think about it you can see how they ended up with 4.3mm for the gaps.
    The border is 10cm, each professor's bar 2cm and each stripe 5mm. If you space out six bars evenly you'll end up with gaps of 4.3mm (10cm - 2x2cm - 6x0.5cm = 3cm ➜ 3cm/7 = 0.42857... cm).

I remember in the book it says a black belt with a white bar is a black belt student/ non teacher, black belt red bar is for black belt teachers. I think I also saw a video of Grandmaster Helio talking about it?

So I was curious, is it acceptable to get your stripes embroidered or sew into your belt? I feel like this a more permanent way and professional way to get your stripes added onto your belt and won't wear or come off like electrical tape will., almost akin to getting your rank sewn on when you get promoted in the military or add services strips to your uniform sleeve.

Depends on what you consider rewritten and what federation you adhere to. I believe there are 5 of them now if you count the Jiu-Jitsu Global Federation. This was the 1st and original federation formed to create the rules and standards for modern competition and created the modern belt system.

Idea from an non-jiu-jitsu guy....wouldnt it be nice if there would be a tape "ready to use" ? So if you change your master degree you only need to buy a new already prepared tape and stick it on your belt...mhhh maybe its a gap in the market ;)
