Let's Play Quest for Glory 1 VGA #02: Character Generation

- This is my first time playing through this game. Kindly avoid posting major spoilers in the comments.
This video consists only of me talking about the game briefly and character generation. While this is not something you'd normally need to do in a point and click adventure game, the Quest for Glory series is both point and click and RPG combined, with stats and skills to raise.
We're going to need to be very careful with what we decide to have proficiency with, for we can't improve skills we have absolutely no knowledge of and there'll be few opportunities to be trained in said skills later in the series. As for what kind of skillset I'm going for, let's just say that I have a long term plan in mind for our wannabe hero that may not be apparent right now.

I'm mostly familiar with this series with the thief and magic user classes so seeing you tackle it with a fighter is a treat. Thank you kindly, Kiko.
Kiko and Sierra are a winning combination for hilarity!... and death. Lots of death. But that's mostly Sierra.
Looking forward to this LP!
I hope Pawdugan is watching this.
That dude is totally playing with a diabolo! I had that as a kid. So much fun.
I would have never thought about a Point and Click RPG, it is kind of genius in a way.
I loved the spell descriptions. Humor was awesome.
Yay I I haven't played this since in so long ... Can't wait to see Kiki deal with some of the stuff I got stuck on ... Got to love moon logic
"And probably death". Heh... Half the fun for me in Quest For Glory is all the ways to die, and the way the game mocks you. Then again, it's Sierra!
Sierra games mocking you on deaths is comedy gold.
Point allocation definitely affects how you work towards certain tasks for your class, particularly with regards to when (and where) you would need to "train" your stats up. Luck can offset some of the skill requirements, though it shouldn't be relied upon (as not all checks allow Luck).
For the curious, The Class-specific skills/abilities (effectively turning you into a Hybrid Class) are as follows:
Fighter: Parry (technically, as this gets merged with Dodge as a common skill in QFG5 - part of why you have to declare your class in that game upon importing a character)
Magic User: Magic
Thief: Stealth and Lockpicking.
Climbing is actually *not* a Thief skill, despite only the Thief class starting with it in QFG1. However, unless you plan on training it up in QFG1 and boosting it during QGF2 and QFG3, it is likely better for a Fighter to just wait until the opportunity presents itself in QFG4 to learn it. In any case, taking Climbing by itself in QFG1 doesn't make you hybrid Thief.
Been ages since I played through this game, will be nice to see your journey :)
"i've never played QfG series, now let me explain the game system in extreme detail"
Yes, i believe your every word.
It sounds like he was reading out of the manual (especially luck) - the mechanics are explained there, and it's not spoilery to search for the big game warnings
I have never played the game before but I DID research how the mechanics for stats, skills and raising both of them work. I've also been given general advice from people about those things to help me get through the earlier parts of the game.
This is not only an RPG, it's a Sierra point and click adventure game. If you go in without preparaton, you will have a bad time.
Ooooh yea this isn't your first moon logic rodeo 😁 as I recall, there is only one way to get all skills, but doesn't unlock class specific scenes anyway. Have only played the original. Very much looking forward to this! 💚😆
@@Kikoskia For most part, that's true. Still, there are few dead ends in this series. The ones like when you don't save the mouse in King"s Quest V.
I have seen several playthroughs of this game on youtube but this I think will be first I have seen with a mostly non hybrid character so should be interesting.
i played this back in the day as a thief. the only stat i couldnt max out was climbing which i got to 82.
great game. i loved the import feature for the sequels.
Before playing this series years and years ago, I honestly disliked RPGs, because all these stats just confused and confounded me. Didn't help English isn't my first language and back then didn't understand it too well, so it just added a layer of complexity to translating everything. This series however helped me finally understand the appeal of RPGs and what all these confusing stats were all about.
Still have a little trouble fully getting into D&D type of games, but at least I understand it a bit more than I used to thanks to this series.
Woah! Quest for Glory! Damn, Kiko, you just hit the gold mine with Quest for Glory. What next? Leisure Suit Larry? Also, where did you get this? GoG?
Ooohhh a rpg point and click adventure game. This should be interesting, a type of game I love and one I never got into mashed together.
Thx. I played this wonderful game when I was a kid.
For me I'd choice as the fighter made a suitable for my play.
Pity, in the Hero's Quest version you could type "Pick nose."
And if your skill was too low, you'd die.
It's still an option, if only in a different format.
Oh i hope you go through the entire series with Derek!
I was half expecting the statue to get really buff when you selected fighter.
As a little kid I watched my big brother play the OG version of this game.
As I remember it playing thru the og versions, the class limits were that you could not get picklock skill as anything other than thief, best armor and weapons were fighter only and highest level spell were mage only. Everything else anyone could get to 100 and it was not too difficult with the old engine to grind those out.
One of my favorite games!
imo, thief is the best start. I haven't played QFG in a LONG time, but as a kid I never found a way to get lockpicks or the thief sign as anything other than a thief. Since you can get magic and good fighting as anyone, having the ability to loot the town blind gives you a huge advantage.
But thats not very herolike, is it
Always sign your name with a flourish.
This was my favorite game as a kid. For me it will always be Hero's Quest because that's what it was called when I bought it. IMO the EGA version is slightly superior to the VGA version because you could play a mix of all three classes by choosing a fighter picking magic and pick locks, then dropping your shield, I believe dropping your shield was not possible in the VGA version.
He's a Derek, and Dereks don't run!
In this game I only played as a thief, because you could get every skill, except for parry of course...
Class matters more on later games, but class dictates what actions give you points in this one, but there is no penalty for doing things against class
Thanks for the video
Agility is important for fighters because that and vitality determines your stamina. Stamina runs out quite fast, as I'm pretty sure you know now. Although you can raise it pretty quickly.
Honestly, Kiko, I think "Any" would have been a better name for him...
okay, okay... my nephew has the name you gave your character, except his name is spelt Deryk, with a "y" and I keep teasing him by spelling it Derek. with an "e". so when you named your character Derek, I looked up saw the spelling and just started laughing.
I'll admit, I'm not much familiar with the Sierra games you named, nor this one.
The only one I easily remember is one of my favorites: Birthright: Gorgon's Alliance.
Sierra were the publishers of that one and my, is that... an experience.
Will you be doing a playthrough from QFG1 to QFG5?
In time, yes.
@@Kikoskia May I make a recommendation? There is a fan remake of the second game. It's quite good. If you don't mind using an unofficial game, I'd go with that.
Yeah, the VGA version of QFG2 is far better, and it's honestly more of a remaster than a total remake, being as loyal to the original as QFG1 EGA -> QFG1 VGA was.
This might be a distracting LP for me to listen to. Just a funny feeling.
You may want to put "Blind" in the video title.
I prefer to put a comment about it in the description.
I'm actually slightly disappointed you chose the fighter class. Everyone chooses the fighter class. I'm super bored with the fighter class.
While it is your game and I'm 100% in, I just wish someone would pick the mage or wizard.
It's unusual you say that, because every person I know who has played the game NEVER plays as a fighter.
Kikoskia ...LOL! 🤣
Not like there aren't opportunities to Fighter for an honorable and good person like Kikoskia.
Hm. Most people I've seen go with thief.
I always played the magic user, but that goes for most rpgs...
On a related note, MetalJesusRocks used to work for Sierra Online and has recently released a couple of new interviews with Ken and Roberta Williams. YT no longer allows links, but you can select and copy each of these lines and paste them into TH-cam's search to learn some background info about Sierra from the founders:
