If Grand Admiral Thrawn would’ve taken over the Empire I believe it would’ve stood for 1000 years. Because Thrawn has empathy for his people under him. we see this time and time again when he is dealing with his subordinates making mistakes. He doesn’t automatically kill them. He tries to teach them. He got a ruthlessness about him when it comes to people that are incompetence, but he still has empathy. The Empire wouldn’t have been is the trouble it found itself in if Thrawn was the Emperor. I believe the rebel alliance would’ve never existed. He would rule with a firm fist, but again there is that empathy part about him where he wouldn’t let all those atrocities in the empire ever happen, which would’ve never created the rebel alliance. That is my belief. You see this more prevalence in the last three episodes of Asoka the series.

I think that if the Empire was to last for as long as possible, Tarkin should have been the De Facto Leader of the Empire, while Sidious gets to do whatever he wants, strengthening his connection to the Dark Side. Darth Vader, Thrawn, Jerjerrod, Krennick, Pryce, and Brendol Hux would have maintained the order in the galaxy, leading these Acolyte armies.
