This guy had so much soul. I didnt care for bands like this at first cause I hadn't lived a real life yet. Once you've really gone through some shit, you see what makes this so special.
Ian had no pretense of his suffering...his lyrics raw and so accessible to anyone who needed a guiding hand thru the madness of the modern world. A billion in one talent.
The lyrics are sad but the music is of hope and grit, such is life, we are at the mercy of suffering but we must fight through it at every step of the way

My son who is 24 introduced me to Joy Division, I've heard covers to 2 of their songs. These guys where ahead of their time or where tapping into something they saw coming...
Dude I got on board the joy division train at the age of 18 when I heard love will tear on Donnie darko ,at the age now of 33 I’m still flat out playing there music . genres come and genres go ,there is but a hand full of artists that can be classed as timeless Joy being one of them

To be fair, joy division was going in that direction with the heavier synthesizers implemented in some of the songs off of closer. If Curtis lived, they probably would have went the same direction but with darker lyrics.

Actually, I was not bothered by your all caps comment, unintentional as it was, your comment is so true and deserved caps. I listened to them as a teenager in the 70's and they rocked my world. Totally different music than what was being made at the time. They ushered in all the great bands of the early 80's, they were a huge influence. I have always felt so sorry for Ian, epilepsy is a horrible thing to experience, perhaps meds today could have helped him better. Idk. @@edie9330 thank you pal, i came across a DVD some yrs ago just called "IAN CURTIS" wow ! only then did i learn about him and joy division, I'm certain that he also had depression, {obviously} prob not recognized much then, as well as epilepsy, as you say a horrible thing to have suffered, i think his music is still here because he was ahead of his time! a result of writing/singing with the deepest of passion an truth is that most only see the surface of it, {as i did} it took time for the rest to slowly come to the surface to be appreciated. {as i, sum 30 yrs on} thanks to this tube lol we can delve back to the 70/80's an sort out what was ushered without appreciation ps if the CAP fits..lol, thanks Edie
This song is a perfect example of why Joy Division to me are like post war brutalist architecture reimagined in sonic form- it's so monumental. It's also like they took all the horrors that mankind inflicted upon itself in the 20th century and wound it up tight into a spring to propel themselves into the future. I feel a schizoid notion of then looking forward into the great unknown with a mixture of curiosity, hope and dread: putting a brave face on it all trying to suppress their fears that humanity had passed, or was passing, its high point whilst refusing to accept that in some way or another beauty would not prevail.

The guitar and bass tones and textures fill each other in a way so complementary one can not hear one with out the other. The drums subtle boom and fill while slowing the apparent haste of the G n B give pause to listen deeper into the mix. I agree this is one of if not THE best intro I have ever heard and I have been listening seriously to music since 1967.

Wow. He seems so vibrant and alive in this particular song than the last few he was apart of. I always knew his voice as a lifeless, hopeless sound coming from someone who was also lifeless and who had lost hope. Never seen this side of him. It's such a shame, he was too young. Had so much potential.
Ian had what my brother suffers from, grand mal epilepsy. It's hard to live with someone when they have fits and collapse onto the floor writhing about for up to an hour or more. Have cried when witnessing Paul staring up in confusion after a fit, it broke my heart but now he is married and uses sedatives to manage his condition.
@@gpwnedable Thanks for your comment. Life seems to be a struggle to break free from the illusions that severely limit our joy of existence. Ian lost the battle at an early age but he lives on with his brilliant musical creations that will never ever perish in the way he did.
@@bodhiapurva3887 sometimes illnesses get generalized and emotions get overshadowed by a big label, it's hard to be seen as an otherwise unfeeling dissociated thing. i have really bad rigidity and back spasms as well as like 9 disc protrusions at 22 and no one seems to know why. it's like my head is collapsing over my neck and i'm all hunched with burning skin and trouble/pain feeling my tailbone and bodily sensations. one of my parents has tethered cord and the other died of a massive heart attack. they outright said the spine disease could not be ruled out so where does that leave me? i've had polyps, a mass somewhere else, and no one will tell me why. they just tell me it could be worse as my bones crack more. my advice is do not take the tramadol, take the muscle relaxers, benzos, and codeine if they offer it

Also do you sleep on a supportive mattress and try to sit upright in chairs? Diet can influence body functions and it helps to eat particular foods that are beneficial. What are your general stress levels like? As you have been told, Tramadol is not that effective, your body quickly gets used to it and then you need bigger doses. Codeine Phosphate is good but this affects digestion so you need to eat foods that stop this. A drug called Gabapentin might be effective, have used this myself for pain and sleeplessness. Some may not like what I am going to say but tough, from what I've seen and heard Joy Division is the greatest band in the history of rock and here is why. Their sound was different from anything rock has ever produced and finally Ian Curtis's lyrics are different from anything ever in the history of rock. Not the Beatles or the stones or the doors come's close and iam not knocking those bands. Those bands are rock standard Joy Division on the other hand was just different.
I agree mostly but does being different make you great? Im abig roses fan and technically they are superior musicians and made a bigger impact. But you can argue they nicked loads from 60s bands and later led zep. Who knows. Good music is good music.

I love this. It's like finding new music for the first time. I've never heard them until recently. I am probably a decade older than most people who know Joy division, but I listened to Hooky's book, Unknown Pleasures and just had to listen to the music. I am completely in love with it! I am so sorry that Ian is gone. He was such an iconic singer and personality. Like Jim Morrison. They both have that "of no particular era" quality to their music. If any psychologist or psychiatrist wanted to use Joy Division as a thesis into human pain, suffering and it’s results; well here you are. I first heard and watched JD on The Tube; I’m a Geordie so there you go. I was gobsmacked by JD immediately, dark haunting rhythms and constant beats, the only reason that JD haven’t been lauded more than they are is because they frighten people, they open the window to their souls and nobody likes to look inside in case it contradicts their personal view of themselves. Joy Division had less success and appeal compared to New Order; which I also like very much. But it’s only now that the roots are starting to resonate and bring people back. I never left, at approaching 68 I still understand the multi layers of life, death and confusion that life presents us with. Funny isn’t it, an unknown slightly schizophrenic Manchester boy could condense down human essence and spit it back at the world in such meaningful form. Rest peacefully Ian Curtis, life tormented you.
Ian is immortal in these clips. His stage presence was hypnotic, you just gazed at him and your mind went blank as he twisted and shook projecting his views about the dark side of his life. Saw him at the Rainbow, London just a few months before his suicide. Heard all his pain and frustration being unleashed on a dazzled audience and it was just incredible. Must have played Unknown Pleasures and Closer more than any other albums in my extensive collection. The other members of the band hated him and their lack of support was one of the reasons why he gave up on life just before the group made it really big. Ian is my anti-hero, an example of what not to do when you are down and can't see an immediate way out.
@@5burowz Yes, a documentary was made where Peter Hook, Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris were asked about their feelings towards Ian after finding out he hanged himself. "We thought, what a bastard to do that just before we were to embark on a tour of the USA". They all sounded very annoyed that their front man opted out of the band's progress and they had to change the name of the band after that. New Order made average records at best and now Peter Hook has started to play all the original Joy Division songs calling himself 'Peter Hook and the light'

Out of step in time you were. That was your magic and then it ultimately became your demise. A shooting star analogy. Briefest moment in the sky and then gone but etched in all our hearts and minds onwards forever.
To me one of the best songs still to this day. One must go back to that time in the late 70’s and beginning of the 80’s. The Thatcher and Carter years the doom and gloom of that period, the economic down turn and the height of the Cold War that was everywhere in England; US; The West. Bands such as Joy Division and the Smiths with their lyrical styles spoke to the youth of that period like no others. Spoke to the despair the youth felt.

Joy Division, and Ian Curtis in particular, romanticized not the aesthetic of gothic rock but the idea that pop music could sound very macabre. They proved that you don't have to look a certain way to be part of any particular subgenre, but to have feelings, thoughts, and emotions parallel to a mindset we all know too true. They set the standard for a very raw and DIY style of 'Outsider (Poppy) Rock' that would go recreated and recycled for years to come. One of the greatest creations of music we know today. Oh what would have been of this band, or perhaps this is all they could have been?

I always loved NIN cover of this song and I never really listened to this original with any sense of thought, but after I watched the documentary about them, it really hit me differently and every time I hear it now it has so much more feeling and sense of what Ian must have been going through 😢

I used to be gothic in the 80th. Joy division was my favourite, I even called my dog Ian. Still keep the whole vinyls. Thanks for sharing, still sounds so deep and unique, their vibe had influences of the Grunge 12 years later.
I was watching The Equalizer and recognized "New Dawn Fades" from "Heat" which I've always LOVED, then worked my way down to Joy Division so I could learn the guitar parts and words to the song. I've always loved "Dead Souls" too covered by Nine Inch Nails.

One of the greatest songs of all time. (My opinion) everything about it is sensational, it has a timeless quality and sounds like a band at the peak of their powers! God knows what Joy Division would have achieved if Ian Curtis had lived? The two albums are epic!
The first band I ever really cared about & here I still am 40-odd years later. For a band that really only made two studio albums (as Joy Division) & a smattering of EPs & singles.. their range was breathtaking. From Dead Souls to Glass to Atmosphere to Exercise One..

Wow. He seems so vibrant and alive in this particular song than the last few he was apart of. I always knew his voice as a lifeless, hopeless sound coming from someone who was also lifeless and who had lost hope. Never seen this side of him. It's such a shame, he was too young. Had so much potential.
Ian had what my brother suffers from, grand mal epilepsy. It's hard to live with someone when they have fits and collapse onto the floor writhing about for up to an hour or more. Have cried when witnessing Paul staring up in confusion after a fit, it broke my heart but now he is married and uses sedatives to manage his condition.

@@gpwnedable Thanks for your comment. Life seems to be a struggle to break free from the illusions that severely limit our joy of existence. Ian lost the battle at an early age but he lives on with his brilliant musical creations that will never ever perish in the way he did.
@@bodhiapurva3887 sometimes illnesses get generalized and emotions get overshadowed by a big label, it's hard to be seen as an otherwise unfeeling dissociated thing. i have really bad rigidity and back spasms as well as like 9 disc protrusions at 22 and no one seems to know why. it's like my head is collapsing over my neck and i'm all hunched with burning skin and trouble/pain feeling my tailbone and bodily sensations. one of my parents has tethered cord and the other died of a massive heart attack. they outright said the spine disease could not be ruled out so where does that leave me? i've had polyps, a mass somewhere else, and no one will tell me why. they just tell me it could be worse as my bones crack more. my advice is do not take the tramadol, take the muscle relaxers, benzos, and codeine if they offer it

Also do you sleep on a supportive mattress and try to sit upright in chairs? Diet can influence body functions and it helps to eat particular foods that are beneficial. What are your general stress levels like?
As you have been told, Tramadol is not that effective, your body quickly gets used to it and then you need bigger doses. Codeine Phosphate is good but this affects digestion so you need to eat foods that stop this. A drug called Gabapentin might be effective, have used this myself for pain and sleeplessness.

Some may not like what I am going to say but tough, from what I've seen and heard Joy Division is the greatest band in the history of rock and here is why. Their sound was different from anything rock has ever produced and finally Ian Curtis's lyrics are different from anything ever in the history of rock. Not the Beatles or the stones or the doors come's close and iam not knocking those bands. Those bands are rock standard Joy Division on the other hand was just different.

I agree mostly but does being different make you great? Im abig roses fan and technically they are superior musicians and made a bigger impact. But you can argue they nicked loads from 60s bands and later led zep. Who knows. Good music is good music.

I love this. It's like finding new music for the first time. I've never heard them until recently. I am probably a decade older than most people who know Joy division, but I listened to Hooky's book, Unknown Pleasures and just had to listen to the music. I am completely in love with it! I am so sorry that Ian is gone. He was such an iconic singer and personality. Like Jim Morrison. They both have that "of no particular era" quality to their music. I want to hear everything they've done. and New Order too. Thanks, Jeff You deserve to break your arm patting yourself on the back. *smiles *

If any psychologist or psychiatrist wanted to use Joy Division as a thesis into human pain, suffering and it’s results; well here you are. I first heard and watched JD on The Tube; I’m a Geordie so there you go. I was gobsmacked by JD immediately, dark haunting rhythms and constant beats, the only reason that JD haven’t been lauded more than they are is because they frighten people, they open the window to their souls and nobody likes to look inside in case it contradicts their personal view of themselves. Joy Division had less success and appeal compared to New Order; which I also like very much. But it’s only now that the roots are starting to resonate and bring people back. I never left, at approaching 68 I still understand the multi layers of life, death and confusion that life presents us with. Funny isn’t it, an unknown slightly schizophrenic Manchester boy could condense down human essence and spit it back at the world in such meaningful form. Rest peacefully Ian Curtis, life tormented you.

Ian is immortal in these clips. His stage presence was hypnotic, you
just gazed at him and your mind went blank as he twisted and shook
projecting his views about the dark side of his life. Saw him at the
Rainbow, London just a few months before his suicide. Heard all his pain
and frustration being unleashed on a dazzled audience and it was just
incredible. Must have played Unknown Pleasures and Closer more than any other albums in my extensive collection. The other members of the band hated him and their lack of support was one of the reasons why he gave up on life just before the group made it really big. Ian is my anti-hero, an example of what not to do when you are down and can't see an immediate way out.

@@5burowz Yes, a documentary was made where Peter Hook, Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris were asked about their feelings towards Ian after finding out he hanged himself. "We thought, what a bastard to do that just before we were to embark on a tour of the USA". They all sounded very annoyed that their front man opted out of the band's progress and they had to change the name of the band after that. New Order made average records at best and now Peter Hook has started to play all the original Joy Division songs calling himself 'Peter Hook and the light'

To me one of the best songs still to this day. One must go back to that time in the late 70’s and beginning of the 80’s. The Thatcher and Carter years the doom and gloom of that period, the economic down turn and the height of the Cold War that was everywhere in England; US; The West. Bands such as Joy Division and the Smiths with their lyrical styles spoke to the youth of that period like no others. Spoke to the despair the youth felt.

Joy Division, and Ian Curtis in particular, romanticized not the aesthetic of gothic rock but the idea that pop music could sound very macabre. They proved that you don't have to look a certain way to be part of any particular subgenre, but to have feelings, thoughts, and emotions parallel to a mindset we all know too true. They set the standard for a very raw and DIY style of 'Outsider (Poppy) Rock' that would go recreated and recycled for years to come. One of the greatest creations of music we know today. Oh what would have been of this band, or perhaps this is all they could have been?
So ahead of their time, another soul taken much to soon.

I always loved NIN cover of this song and I never really listened to this original with any sense of thought, but after I watched the documentary about them, it really hit me differently and every time I hear it now it has so much more feeling and sense of what Ian must have been going through 😢

I used to be gothic in the 80th. Joy division was my favourite, I even called my dog Ian. Still keep the whole vinyls. Thanks for sharing, still sounds so deep and unique, their vibe had influences of the Grunge 12 years later.

I was watching The Equalizer and recognized "New Dawn Fades" from "Heat" which I've always LOVED, then worked my way down to Joy Division so I could learn the guitar parts and words to the song. I've always loved "Dead Souls" too covered by Nine Inch Nails.
