It would probably help if you kept the controller straight facing the aircraft and if you keep the antennas the flat part 90° to your controller and face towards the aircraft I understand you're talking in your video but if you were to do that you're probably get better transmission. I'm looking at your video and the way your antennas are facing are almost Straight Ahead or Tilted a little bit down. The flat part of your antenna should be facing upwards towards your craft you'll probably get better results then

Yup. Agree with the antenna comment. Should be facing the drone.... not just "angled down a bit".

Becareful on that ice. My wife and I just got into an accident a couple days ago in my truck. Hit a patch of black ice and wrecked it. Great video. Thanks for doing the test. So do you plan on getting the new Mavic Air? I haven’t got a drone yet. Which one do you think is best for a newbie the Spark, Mavic Air, or Mavic Pro platinum.

MrGeorgiaBoi706 - I recommend a newbie not get a drone, rather a cheap quadcopter first. Like the Bugs 3. It has no altitude hold and no safety features. That way, you learn to fly it before you pilot it in automated mode. If you go into Atti mode in any of the craft you mentioned, you’ll crash it if you can’t fly it. Trust me, I teach for a living. Oh, and try and specify a price range first. You’re all over the board with those different UAVs.

You say the gimbal doesn't work in sport mode. You gotta change it from FPV to Follow in the settings when you switch to sport.

The best environment I've ever seen to do a range test. No trees, mountains, just a large runway straight ahead. I would like to do a range test to my Mavic Pro in that place. ;)

Okay, so a couple of quick points for ya, since I’m in a hurry. Tilt the Spark past 90 degrees when you catch it to shut down the motors...like, quickly and immediately. Next, the OTG cable does not really work with the Android devices so well, but has little to do with the Sparks range. Yes, there are two Wi-Fi signals - one to b/t the RC and the phone and one b/t the craft and the RC. The OTG removes some of that workload off your device and then also stabilizes the video feed. Without an OTG cable I went 1.65 miles in Western PA. Of course, it wasn’t at 80 feet like you. When did they stop teaching you kids trigonometry? FLY HIGHER. I was at 907 feet when I made my distance run. Cable or not, you are not flying in wide open terrain. I see plenty of trees to bounce your signal off of or absorb. Unless you fly higher, you won’t get the big numbers. Also, it is programmed to fly home at that speed. You never engaged sport mode, so you were stuck at 5.5 to 5.7 mph w/o a tailwind. So the wind had nothing to do with your Spark returning at that speed. Lastly, DJI was created to initially work with iOS, hence all the Android issues. You might want to get an iPad or iPhone. I use an iPad mini 4 with cellular. You should also have cellular on your device or, at the least, hook it to a hotspot to load the maps. Knowing where you are is helpful, especially if you have a fly away. On distance, it is often better to fly by map...IF YOU ARE AT ALTITUDE, that is. Okay, well, hope that all helps. Happy flying.

Why not try 2.4 ghz setting? Far better range.
