  • On October 10, 1970 Fiji became independent after nearly a century of British rule.
    After nearly 100 years as a British Colony, Fiji gains its Independence. The Prince of Wales represents the Queen at the Island's celebrations, and drinks a cup of the traditional local brew "Kava" during the unusual welcome ceremony.
